Jonah

Chapter 1

1 NOW the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Matai (Matthew), saying,

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.

3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare and went on board to go with them to Tarshish to flee from the presence of the LORD.

4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was in danger of being broken.

5 Then the mariners were afraid and cried every man to his god, and they threw the wares that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it. But Jonah had gone down into the inner hold of the ship; and he lay and was fast asleep.

6 So the captain came to him and said to him, Why are you sleeping? Arise, call upon your God, perhaps God will deliver us, that we perish not.

7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil has come upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8 Then they said to him, Tell us for what cause this evil has come upon us; what is your occupation? And from what place do you come? What is your country? And of what people are you?

9 And Jonah said to them, I am a Hebrew; and I worship the LORD the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.

10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, What have you done? For the men knew that he had fled from the presence of the LORD.

11 And when he had told them everything, then they said to him, What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us? For behold, the sea continues to be more tempestuous against us.

12 Jonah said to them, Take me up and cast me into the sea, so that the sea may be calm to you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to the land; but they could not; for the sea became more tempestuous against them.

14 Therefore they cried to the LORD and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou art the LORD and hast done as it pleased thee.

15 So they took up Jonah and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

16 And the men were greatly terrified from the presence of the LORD, and they offered sacrifices of righteousness to the LORD and made vows.

17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish, and it swallowed up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Kapitel 1

1 Es geschah das Wort1697 des HErrn3068 zu Jona3124, dem Sohn1121 Amithais, und sprach559:

2 Mache dich auf6965 und gehe3212 in die große1419 Stadt5892 Ninive5210 und predige7121 drinnen; denn ihre Bosheit7451 ist heraufkommen vor mich6440.

3 Aber Jona3124 machte sich auf6965 und floh1272 vor6440 dem HErrn3068; und wollte aufs Meer8659 und kam935 hinab3381 gen Japho3305. Und da er ein Schiff591 fand4672, das aufs Meer8659 wollte fahren3381, gab5414 er Fährgeld7939 und trat, darein, daß er mit ihnen aufs Meer8659 führe935 vor6440 dem HErrn3068.

4 Da ließ der HErr3068 einen großen1419 Wind7307 aufs Meer3220 kommen2904 und hub sich ein groß1419 Ungewitter5591 auf dem Meer3220, daß man meinete, das Schiff591 würde zerbrechen7665.

5 Und die Schiffsleute4419 fürchteten3372 sich7901 und schrieen2199 ein376 jeglicher zu seinem GOtt430; und warfen2904 das Gerät3627, das im Schiff591 war, ins Meer3220, daß es leichter7043 würde. Aber Jona3124 war hinunter3381 in das Schiff5600 gestiegen, lag und schlief7290.

6 Da trat7126 zu ihm der Schiffsherr und sprach559 zu ihm: Was schläfst du7290? Stehe auf6965, rufe7121 deinen GOtt430 an, ob vielleicht GOtt430 an uns gedenken6245 wollte, daß wir nicht6 verdürben!

7 Und einer376 sprach559 zum andern7453: Kommt, wir wollen5307 losen1486, daß5307 wir erfahren3045, um welches willen7945 es uns1486 so übel7451 gehe3212! Und da sie loseten, traf es Jona3124.

8 Da sprachen559 sie zu ihm: Sage5046 uns, warum gehet es uns so übel7451? Was ist dein Gewerbe4399, und wo370 kommst du her935? Aus welchem Lande776 bist du und von welchem Volk5971 bist du?

9 Er sprach559 zu6213 ihnen: Ich bin ein Ebräer und fürchte3373 den HErrn3068, GOtt430 vom Himmel8064, welcher gemacht hat das Meer3220 und das Trockene3004.

10 Da fürchteten3374 sich3372 die Leute582 sehr und sprachen zu ihm5046: Warum hast du denn solches getan? Denn sie582 wußten3045, daß er vor6440 dem HErrn3068 floh1272; denn er hatte6213 es ihnen gesagt559.

11 Da sprachen559 sie zu ihm: Was sollen1980 wir denn mit dir tun6213, daß uns das Meer3220 stille werde8367? Denn das Meer3220 fuhr ungestüm5590.

12 Er sprach559 zu ihnen: Nehmet mich und7945 werfet mich ins Meer3220, so wird euch das Meer3220 stille werden8367. Denn ich5375 weiß3045, daß solch groß1419 Ungewitter5591 übe euch kommt um meinetwillen.

13 Und die Leute582 trieben2864, daß sie wieder7725 zu1980 Lande3004 kämen, aber sie konnten3201 nicht; denn das Meer3220 fuhr ungestüm5590 wider sie.

14 Da riefen7121 sie zu6213 dem HErrn3068 und sprachen559: Ach577, HErr3068, laß uns nicht verderben um6 dieses Mannes376 See LE5315 willen und rechne uns nicht zu unschuldig5355 Blut1818; denn du, HErr3068, tust5414, wie dir‘s gefällt2654!

15 Und5975 sie nahmen5375 Jona3124 und warfen2904 ihn ins Meer3220. Da stund das Meer3220 stille von seinem Wüten2197.

16 Und2076 die Leute582 fürchteten3372 den HErrn3068 sehr und taten dem HErrn3068 Opfer2077 und Gelübde5087.
