1 I сталось за ча́су, коли судді судили, то був голод у Краю́. І пішов був чоловік з Юдиного Віфлеєму мешкати в моавських поля́х, він і жінка та двоє синів його.

2 А ім'я́ тому чоловікові Елімеле́х, а ім'я́ жінці його Ноомі́; і ім'я́ двох синів його — Махлон і Кілйон, ефратяни з Віфлеєму Юдиного. І прийшли вони на моавські поля́, та й залишилися.

3 І помер Елімелех, муж Ноомі́, і зоста́лася вона та два їхні си́ни.

4 І взяли вони собі за жіно́к моаві́тянок, — ім'я́ одній Орпа́, а ім'я другій Рут. І сиділи вони там близько десяти літ.

5 І повмирали й вони обоє, Махлон та Кілйон. І позосталася та жінка по двох ді́тях своїх та по чоловікові своєму.

6 І встала вона та невістки її, і вернулися з моавських піль, бо почула на моавському полі, що Госпо́дь згадав про наро́д Свій, даючи їм хліба.

7 І вийшла вона з того місця, де була́ там, та оби́дві невістки з нею, та й пішли дорогою, щоб вернутися до Юдиного кра́ю.

8 І сказала Ноомі́ до двох своїх невісток: „Ідіть, верніться кожна до дому своєї матері. І нехай Господь зробить із вами милість, як ви зробили з померлими та зо мною.

9 Нехай Господь дасть вам, — і ви зна́йдете відпочинок кожна в домі свого мужа!“ І вона поцілувала їх, а вони підняли́ свій голос та плакали.

10 І вони сказали до неї: „Ні, — з тобою ми ве́рнемось до народу твого!“

11 А Ноомі́ сказала: „Вертайтеся, до́чки мої, — чого ви пі́дете зо мною? Чи я маю ще в утро́бі своїй синів, а вони стануть вам за чоловіків?

12 Верніться, до́чки мої, ідіть, бо я занадто стара́, щоб бути для мужа. А коли б я й сказала: Маю надію, і коли б цієї ночі була з мужем, і також породила синів, —

13 чи ж ви чекали б їх, аж поки повироста́ють? Чи ж ви зв'язалися б з ними, щоб не бути замужем? Ні, до́чки мої, бо мені значно гірше, як вам, — бо Господня рука знайшла мене“.

14 І підняли́ вони голос свій, і заплакали ще. І поцілувала Орпа свою свекру́ху, а Рут пригорну́лася до неї.

15 І сказала Ноомі: „Ось зови́ця твоя вернулася до наро́ду свого та до богів своїх, — вернися й ти за зови́цею своєю!“

16 А Рут відказала: „Не силуй мене, щоб я покинула тебе, щоб я вернулася від тебе, бо куди пі́деш ти, туди піду́ й я, а де житимеш ти, там житиму й я. Наро́д твій буде мій народ, а Бог твій — мій Бог.

17 Де помреш ти, там помру й я, і там буду похована. Нехай Господь зробить мені так, і так нехай додасть, і тільки смерть розлучить мене з тобою“.

18 І побачила Ноомі́, що вона настоює йти за нею, і перестала вговорювати її.

19 І пішли вони вдвох, аж прийшли до Віфлеєму. І сталося, коли вони вхо́дили до Віфлеєму, то зашуміло все місто про них, і говорили: „Чи це Ноомі́?“

20 А вона сказала їм: „Не кличте мене: Ноомі́, — кличте мене: Мара́, бо велику гірко́ту зробив мені Всемогу́тній.

21 Я замо́жною пішла була, та порожньою вернув мене Господь. Чого кличете мене: Ноомі́, коли Господь свідчив проти мене, а Всемогутній послав мені горе?“

22 І вернулася Ноомі́ та з нею моавітянка Рут, невістка її, що верталася з моавських піль. І прийшли вони до Віфлеєму на початку жнив ячме́ню.

Chapter 1

1 NOW it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man from Beth-lehem of Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.

2 And the name of the man was Elimeleck, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons Malion and Calion, Ephrathites from Beth-lehem of Judah. And they came to the land of Moab to sojourn there.

3 And Elimeleck the husband of Naomi died; and she was left with her two sons.

4 And they took them wives of the Moabite women; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

5 And Malion and Calion, her two sons, died; and the woman was bereft of her husband and her two sons.

6 Then she started with her daughters-in-law to return from the land of Moab; for she had heard in the land of Moab that the LORD had visited his people in giving them food.

7 So she went forth out of the place where they sojourned, along with her two daughters-in-law, to return and go to the land of Judah.

8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Return, go back to your own country and to the house of your kinsmen; may the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with me and with both of my sons who now are dead.

9 The LORD grant you favor so that you may find rest in the house of your parents. Then she kissed them: and they lifted up their voices and wept.

10 And they said to her, No, we will return with you to your land and to your people.

11 But Naomi said to them, Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Will I bear sons again that they may be your husbands?

12 Turn back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, and even if I should have a husband, and should also bear sons;

13 Would you wait for them till they were grown? Would you stay for them from having husbands? No, my daughters; for I am greatly grieved for your sakes, and it grieves me more than it does you, because the hand of the LORD is gone forth against me.

14 And they lifted up their voices again and wept; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, and turned back and went away; but Ruth clung to her.

15 And her mother-in-law said to her, Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her kinsmen; return also after your sister-in-law.

16 And Ruth said to her, Far be it from me to return from following after you, and to leave you; for where you go, I will go; and where you dwell, I will dwell; your people shall be my people, and your God my God:

17 Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried; may the LORD do so to me, and more also, if even death can separate me from you.

18 When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, then she ceased from urging her to go back.

19 So they went together until they came to Beth-lehem of Judah. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, the whole city rejoiced over them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

20 And she said to them, Do not call me Naomi, but call me Bitter of Soul; for the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me.

21 For I went forth from here full, and the LORD has brought me back empty; why then call me Naomi, seeing the LORD has humbled me, and has sorely afflicted me?

22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, for she was wholeheartedly willing to return with her, and they came from the land of Moab at the beginning of the barley harvest.

1 NOW it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man from Beth-lehem of Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.

2 А ім'я́ тому чоловікові Елімеле́х, а ім'я́ жінці його Ноомі́; і ім'я́ двох синів його — Махлон і Кілйон, ефратяни з Віфлеєму Юдиного. І прийшли вони на моавські поля́, та й залишилися.

2 And the name of the man was Elimeleck, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons Malion and Calion, Ephrathites from Beth-lehem of Judah. And they came to the land of Moab to sojourn there.

3 І помер Елімелех, муж Ноомі́, і зоста́лася вона та два їхні си́ни.

3 And Elimeleck the husband of Naomi died; and she was left with her two sons.

4 І взяли вони собі за жіно́к моаві́тянок, — ім'я́ одній Орпа́, а ім'я другій Рут. І сиділи вони там близько десяти літ.

4 And they took them wives of the Moabite women; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

5 І повмирали й вони обоє, Махлон та Кілйон. І позосталася та жінка по двох ді́тях своїх та по чоловікові своєму.

5 And Malion and Calion, her two sons, died; and the woman was bereft of her husband and her two sons.

6 І встала вона та невістки її, і вернулися з моавських піль, бо почула на моавському полі, що Госпо́дь згадав про наро́д Свій, даючи їм хліба.

6 Then she started with her daughters-in-law to return from the land of Moab; for she had heard in the land of Moab that the LORD had visited his people in giving them food.

7 І вийшла вона з того місця, де була́ там, та оби́дві невістки з нею, та й пішли дорогою, щоб вернутися до Юдиного кра́ю.

7 So she went forth out of the place where they sojourned, along with her two daughters-in-law, to return and go to the land of Judah.

8 І сказала Ноомі́ до двох своїх невісток: „Ідіть, верніться кожна до дому своєї матері. І нехай Господь зробить із вами милість, як ви зробили з померлими та зо мною.

8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Return, go back to your own country and to the house of your kinsmen; may the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with me and with both of my sons who now are dead.

9 Нехай Господь дасть вам, — і ви зна́йдете відпочинок кожна в домі свого мужа!“ І вона поцілувала їх, а вони підняли́ свій голос та плакали.

9 The LORD grant you favor so that you may find rest in the house of your parents. Then she kissed them: and they lifted up their voices and wept.

10 І вони сказали до неї: „Ні, — з тобою ми ве́рнемось до народу твого!“

10 And they said to her, No, we will return with you to your land and to your people.

11 А Ноомі́ сказала: „Вертайтеся, до́чки мої, — чого ви пі́дете зо мною? Чи я маю ще в утро́бі своїй синів, а вони стануть вам за чоловіків?

11 But Naomi said to them, Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Will I bear sons again that they may be your husbands?

12 Верніться, до́чки мої, ідіть, бо я занадто стара́, щоб бути для мужа. А коли б я й сказала: Маю надію, і коли б цієї ночі була з мужем, і також породила синів, —

12 Turn back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, and even if I should have a husband, and should also bear sons;

13 чи ж ви чекали б їх, аж поки повироста́ють? Чи ж ви зв'язалися б з ними, щоб не бути замужем? Ні, до́чки мої, бо мені значно гірше, як вам, — бо Господня рука знайшла мене“.

13 Would you wait for them till they were grown? Would you stay for them from having husbands? No, my daughters; for I am greatly grieved for your sakes, and it grieves me more than it does you, because the hand of the LORD is gone forth against me.

14 І підняли́ вони голос свій, і заплакали ще. І поцілувала Орпа свою свекру́ху, а Рут пригорну́лася до неї.

14 And they lifted up their voices again and wept; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, and turned back and went away; but Ruth clung to her.

15 І сказала Ноомі: „Ось зови́ця твоя вернулася до наро́ду свого та до богів своїх, — вернися й ти за зови́цею своєю!“

15 And her mother-in-law said to her, Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her kinsmen; return also after your sister-in-law.

16 А Рут відказала: „Не силуй мене, щоб я покинула тебе, щоб я вернулася від тебе, бо куди пі́деш ти, туди піду́ й я, а де житимеш ти, там житиму й я. Наро́д твій буде мій народ, а Бог твій — мій Бог.

16 And Ruth said to her, Far be it from me to return from following after you, and to leave you; for where you go, I will go; and where you dwell, I will dwell; your people shall be my people, and your God my God:

17 Де помреш ти, там помру й я, і там буду похована. Нехай Господь зробить мені так, і так нехай додасть, і тільки смерть розлучить мене з тобою“.

17 Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried; may the LORD do so to me, and more also, if even death can separate me from you.

18 І побачила Ноомі́, що вона настоює йти за нею, і перестала вговорювати її.

18 When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, then she ceased from urging her to go back.

19 І пішли вони вдвох, аж прийшли до Віфлеєму. І сталося, коли вони вхо́дили до Віфлеєму, то зашуміло все місто про них, і говорили: „Чи це Ноомі́?“

19 So they went together until they came to Beth-lehem of Judah. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, the whole city rejoiced over them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

20 А вона сказала їм: „Не кличте мене: Ноомі́, — кличте мене: Мара́, бо велику гірко́ту зробив мені Всемогу́тній.

20 And she said to them, Do not call me Naomi, but call me Bitter of Soul; for the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me.

21 Я замо́жною пішла була, та порожньою вернув мене Господь. Чого кличете мене: Ноомі́, коли Господь свідчив проти мене, а Всемогутній послав мені горе?“

21 For I went forth from here full, and the LORD has brought me back empty; why then call me Naomi, seeing the LORD has humbled me, and has sorely afflicted me?

22 І вернулася Ноомі́ та з нею моавітянка Рут, невістка її, що верталася з моавських піль. І прийшли вони до Віфлеєму на початку жнив ячме́ню.

22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, for she was wholeheartedly willing to return with her, and they came from the land of Moab at the beginning of the barley harvest.
