Chapter 4

1 AND Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man for the LORD.

2 And she again bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in the course of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to the LORD.

4 And Abel also brought of the first-born of his flock and of the fatlings thereof. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and with his offering;

5 But with Cain and with his offering he was not pleased. So Cain was exceedingly displeased, and his countenance was sad.

6 And the LORD said to Cain, Why are you displeased? and why is your countenance sad?

7 Behold, if you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. You should return to your brother, and he shall be subject to you.

8 And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go to the plain; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?

10 And the LORD said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground.

11 And from henceforth, you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand;

12 When you till the ground, it shall no more yield to you its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shall you be on the earth.

13 And Cain said to the LORD, My transgression is too great to be forgiven.

14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the land; and from thy face shall I be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth; and it shall come to pass, that whoever finds me shall slay me.

15 And the LORD said to him, It shall not be so; whoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, so that anyone who may find him may not kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch; and he started to build a village, and named the village after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methusael: and Methusael begot Lamech.

19 And Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bore Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents, and are owners of cattle.

21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the guitar and harp.

22 And Zillah also bore Tubal-cain, a craftsman in every work of brass and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 And Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, hearken to my speech; for I have killed a man by wounding him, and a boy by beating him.

24 For if Cain is to be avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

25 And Adam knew his wife Eve again; and she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Seth; For God, she said, has given me another offspring instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26 And to Seth also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD.

1 Познал Адам жену свою, Еву, — она зачала и родила Каина, и сказала: «Обрела я человека, дар от ГОСПОДА обрела!»

2 Потом родила она Авеля, брата Каина. Авель пас овец, а Каин возделывал землю.

3 Прошло время, и Каин принес ГОСПОДУ плоды земли,

4 а Авель — наилучший дар из первого приплода стада своего. ГОСПОДЬ благосклонно посмотрел на Авеля и его жертвоприношение,

5 а на Каина и его жертвоприношение не посмотрел. Каин сильно разгневался, и взор его поник.

6 Тогда сказал ГОСПОДЬ Каину: «Отчего ты так сильно разгневался? Отчего поник взор твой?

7 Если намерения твои добры, разве не поднимаешь ты голову? А если недобры, грех притаился у порога. Овладеть тобой он хочет, но ты можешь господствовать над ним».

8 Каин сказал брату своему Авелю: «Выйдем в поле». И как только они вышли в поле, набросился Каин на Авеля, брата своего, и убил его.

9 «Где же Авель, брат твой?» — спросил ГОСПОДЬ Каина. «Не знаю, — ответил тот, — разве я сторож моему брату?»

10 И сказал ГОСПОДЬ: «Что ты сделал?! Я слышу, как кровь брата твоего вопиет ко Мне от земли!

11 И ныне ты проклят: отвергнут землей, что поглотила кровь брата твоего, твоей рукою пролитую.

12 После этого земля уже не станет приносить богатых урожаев, сколько бы ты ни возделывал ее; будешь изгнанником ты и скитальцем».

13 «Наказание это слишком тяжело для меня, не снести мне его, — сказал Каин ГОСПОДУ, —

14 вот Ты теперь гонишь меня с земли. Я должен скрываться от Тебя, быть изгнанником и скитальцем; и первый встречный может убить меня».

15 Но ГОСПОДЬ сказал ему: «Случись такое — всякий, кто убьет Каина, не уйдет от семикратного отмщения». И, чтобы никто, встретившись с Каином, не убил его, дал ГОСПОДЬ Каину особый знак Своей защиты.

16 Тогда ушел Каин с того места, где явился ему ГОСПОДЬ, и поселился в земле Нод, к востоку от Эдема.

17 Познал Каин жену свою, она зачала и родила Ханоха. В те дни Каин основал город, назвав его именем сына своего Ханоха.

18 У Ханоха родился Ирад, который стал отцом Мехияэля; от Мехияэля родился Метушаэль, а от Метушаэля родился Ламех.

19 Ламех взял себе двух жен, одну из них звали Ада, а другую — Цилла.

20 У Ады родился сын Явал, он — родоначальник всех скотоводов, живущих в шатрах.

21 Имя брату его Ювал, он — родоначальник всех играющих на гуслях и свирели.

22 А у Циллы родился сын Тувал-Каин, он был первым, кто начал изготавливать всякие орудия из меди и железа. У Тувал-Каина была сестра Наама.

23 И сказал Ламех женам своим: «Ада и Цилла, послушайте меня, жены Ламеховы, прислушайтесь к тому, что я скажу! Человека убил я за рану, мне нанесенную, юношу, когда тот ударил меня.

24 Если за Каина отмстится всемеро, за Ламеха в семьдесят раз по семеро».

25 Адам вновь познал жену свою, и она родила сына и дала ему имя Шет, сказав при этом: «Бог даровал мне другое дитя вместо Авеля, которого убил Каин».

26 У Шета тоже родился сын, он назвал его Энош; тогда начали люди призывать имя ГОСПОДНЕ, стали поклоняться Ему.

1 AND Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man for the LORD.

1 Познал Адам жену свою, Еву, — она зачала и родила Каина, и сказала: «Обрела я человека, дар от ГОСПОДА обрела!»

2 And she again bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

2 Потом родила она Авеля, брата Каина. Авель пас овец, а Каин возделывал землю.

3 And in the course of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to the LORD.

3 Прошло время, и Каин принес ГОСПОДУ плоды земли,

4 And Abel also brought of the first-born of his flock and of the fatlings thereof. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and with his offering;

4 а Авель — наилучший дар из первого приплода стада своего. ГОСПОДЬ благосклонно посмотрел на Авеля и его жертвоприношение,

5 But with Cain and with his offering he was not pleased. So Cain was exceedingly displeased, and his countenance was sad.

5 а на Каина и его жертвоприношение не посмотрел. Каин сильно разгневался, и взор его поник.

6 And the LORD said to Cain, Why are you displeased? and why is your countenance sad?

6 Тогда сказал ГОСПОДЬ Каину: «Отчего ты так сильно разгневался? Отчего поник взор твой?

7 Behold, if you do well, shall you not be accepted? and if you do not well, sin lies at the door. You should return to your brother, and he shall be subject to you.

7 Если намерения твои добры, разве не поднимаешь ты голову? А если недобры, грех притаился у порога. Овладеть тобой он хочет, но ты можешь господствовать над ним».

8 And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go to the plain; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

8 Каин сказал брату своему Авелю: «Выйдем в поле». И как только они вышли в поле, набросился Каин на Авеля, брата своего, и убил его.

9 And the LORD said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?

9 «Где же Авель, брат твой?» — спросил ГОСПОДЬ Каина. «Не знаю, — ответил тот, — разве я сторож моему брату?»

10 And the LORD said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground.

10 И сказал ГОСПОДЬ: «Что ты сделал?! Я слышу, как кровь брата твоего вопиет ко Мне от земли!

11 И ныне ты проклят: отвергнут землей, что поглотила кровь брата твоего, твоей рукою пролитую.

12 После этого земля уже не станет приносить богатых урожаев, сколько бы ты ни возделывал ее; будешь изгнанником ты и скитальцем».

13 And Cain said to the LORD, My transgression is too great to be forgiven.

13 «Наказание это слишком тяжело для меня, не снести мне его, — сказал Каин ГОСПОДУ, —

14 вот Ты теперь гонишь меня с земли. Я должен скрываться от Тебя, быть изгнанником и скитальцем; и первый встречный может убить меня».

15 And the LORD said to him, It shall not be so; whoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, so that anyone who may find him may not kill him.

15 Но ГОСПОДЬ сказал ему: «Случись такое — всякий, кто убьет Каина, не уйдет от семикратного отмщения». И, чтобы никто, встретившись с Каином, не убил его, дал ГОСПОДЬ Каину особый знак Своей защиты.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

16 Тогда ушел Каин с того места, где явился ему ГОСПОДЬ, и поселился в земле Нод, к востоку от Эдема.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch; and he started to build a village, and named the village after the name of his son, Enoch.

17 Познал Каин жену свою, она зачала и родила Ханоха. В те дни Каин основал город, назвав его именем сына своего Ханоха.

18 And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methusael: and Methusael begot Lamech.

18 У Ханоха родился Ирад, который стал отцом Мехияэля; от Мехияэля родился Метушаэль, а от Метушаэля родился Ламех.
