Chapter 40

1 AND it came to pass after these things that the chief butler of the king of Egypt and the chief baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

3 And he put them into the prison in the house of the commander of the guard, in the ward where Joseph was bound.

4 And the commander of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they remained for some time in the prison.

5 And they both dreamed, each man his own dream in the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and behold, they were sad.

7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in the prison of his master's house, saying, Why do you look so sad today?

8 And they said to him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. And Joseph said to them, Behold, the interpretations belong to God; tell them to me.

9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

10 And in the vine were three branches; and when it budded, its blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes;

11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hands.

12 And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of your dream: The three branches are three days;

13 After three days Pharaoh shall remember you and restore you to your position; and you shall give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, as you did before when you were his butler.

14 But remember me when it shall be well with you, and do me a favor and justice, and make mention of me in the presence of Pharaoh, and bring me out of this prison house;

15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the prison.

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, I also saw in my dream, and, behold. I had three baskets containing white bread on my head;

17 And in the uppermost basket there was of every kind of food for Pharaoh, prepared by a baker; and the birds of prey were eating it out of the basket on my head.

18 And Joseph answered and said to him, This is the interpretation of your dream: The three baskets are three days;

19 After three days Pharaoh shall have you beheaded, and then shall crucify you on a tree, and the birds of prey shall eat your flesh from off you.

20 And it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a banquet for all his servants; and he remembered the chief butler and the chief baker among his servants.

21 And he restored the chief butler to his position; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hands:

22 But he crucified the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

2 Фараон разгневался на двух своих приближенных, главного виночерпия и главного пекаря,

3 и заключил их в темницу при доме начальника стражи, туда же, куда был заключен Иосиф.

4 Начальник стражи поручил их Иосифу, и тот прислуживал им. Они пробыли в заточении некоторое время,

5 и вот им обоим — виночерпию и пекарю египетского царя, которые сидели в темнице — в одну и ту же ночь приснились сны, и каждый сон имел свое особое значение.

6 Придя к ним на следующее утро, Иосиф увидел, что они чем-то опечалены.

7 Он спросил приближенных фараона, заключенных вместе с ним в доме его господина: — Почему у вас сегодня такой печальный вид?

8 — Нам обоим приснились сны, — ответили они, — а истолковать их некому. Иосиф сказал им: — Разве толкование не от Бога? Расскажите мне ваши сны.

9 Главный виночерпий рассказал Иосифу свой сон: — Я видел во сне виноградную лозу,

10 и на лозе были три ветви. Едва на ней показались почки, как она расцвела, и цветы сразу превратились в гроздья винограда.

11 У меня в руке была чаша фараона; я взял виноград, выжал сок в чашу и подал чашу в руку фараону.

12 — Вот что это значит, — сказал ему Иосиф. — Три ветви — это три дня.

13 Через три дня фараон возвысит тебя и возвратит на прежнее место, и ты подашь фараону его чашу, как в прежние времена, когда ты был его виночерпием.

14 Но в те добрые для тебя времена, молю тебя, вспомни обо мне и окажи мне милость: упомяни обо мне фараону, чтобы вызволить меня из темницы.

15 Меня ведь насильно увезли из земли евреев, и здесь я тоже не сделал ничего такого, чтобы сидеть в темнице.

16 Увидев, что Иосиф дал благоприятное истолкование, главный пекарь сказал Иосифу: — Мне тоже приснился сон: я держал на голове три корзины с хлебом.

17 В верхней была всякая выпечка для фараона, но ее клевали птицы прямо из корзины на моей голове.

18 — Вот что это значит, — сказал Иосиф. — Три корзины — это три дня.

19 Через три дня фараон возвысит и тебя тоже — тебе отрубят голову, а тело посадят на кол, и птицы будут клевать его.

20 На третий день, в свой день рождения, фараон устроил пир для всех своих придворных, и в их окружении он возвысил главного виночерпия и главного пекаря:

21 главного виночерпия он возвратил на прежнее место, и тот вновь подал чашу в руку фараону,

22 а главного пекаря посадил на кол, как Иосиф и сказал им в своем истолковании.

23 Но главный виночерпий не вспомнил об Иосифе; он забыл о нем.

1 AND it came to pass after these things that the chief butler of the king of Egypt and the chief baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

3 And he put them into the prison in the house of the commander of the guard, in the ward where Joseph was bound.

4 And the commander of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they remained for some time in the prison.

4 Начальник стражи поручил их Иосифу, и тот прислуживал им. Они пробыли в заточении некоторое время,

5 And they both dreamed, each man his own dream in the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

5 и вот им обоим — виночерпию и пекарю египетского царя, которые сидели в темнице — в одну и ту же ночь приснились сны, и каждый сон имел свое особое значение.

6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and behold, they were sad.

7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in the prison of his master's house, saying, Why do you look so sad today?

8 And they said to him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. And Joseph said to them, Behold, the interpretations belong to God; tell them to me.

8 — Нам обоим приснились сны, — ответили они, — а истолковать их некому. Иосиф сказал им: — Разве толкование не от Бога? Расскажите мне ваши сны.

9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hands.

11 У меня в руке была чаша фараона; я взял виноград, выжал сок в чашу и подал чашу в руку фараону.

12 And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of your dream: The three branches are three days;

12 — Вот что это значит, — сказал ему Иосиф. — Три ветви — это три дня.

13 After three days Pharaoh shall remember you and restore you to your position; and you shall give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, as you did before when you were his butler.

13 Через три дня фараон возвысит тебя и возвратит на прежнее место, и ты подашь фараону его чашу, как в прежние времена, когда ты был его виночерпием.

14 But remember me when it shall be well with you, and do me a favor and justice, and make mention of me in the presence of Pharaoh, and bring me out of this prison house;

14 Но в те добрые для тебя времена, молю тебя, вспомни обо мне и окажи мне милость: упомяни обо мне фараону, чтобы вызволить меня из темницы.

21 And he restored the chief butler to his position; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hands:

21 главного виночерпия он возвратил на прежнее место, и тот вновь подал чашу в руку фараону,

22 But he crucified the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

22 а главного пекаря посадил на кол, как Иосиф и сказал им в своем истолковании.

23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

23 Но главный виночерпий не вспомнил об Иосифе; он забыл о нем.
