Chapter 19

1 Then5119 Pilate4091 therefore3767 took2983 Jesus,2424 and2532 scourged3146 him.

2 And2532 the3588 soldiers4757 plaited4120 a crown4735 of1537 thorns,173 and put it on2007 his846 head,2776 and2532 they put on4016 him846 a purple4210 robe,2440

3 And2532 said,3004 Hail,5463 King935 of the3588 Jews!2453 and2532 they smote him with their hands.1325 846 4475

4 Pilate4091 therefore3767 went1831 forth1854 again,3825 and2532 saith3004 unto them,846 Behold,2396 I bring71 him846 forth1854 to you,5213 that2443 ye may know1097 that3754 I find2147 no3762 fault156 in1722 him.846

5 Then3767 came1831 Jesus2424 forth,1854 wearing5409 the3588 crown4735 of thorns,174 and2532 the3588 purple4210 robe.2440 And2532 Pilate saith3004 unto them,846 Behold2396 the3588 man!444

6 When3753 the3588 chief priests749 therefore3767 and2532 officers5257 saw1492 him,846 they cried out,2905 saying,3004 Crucify4717 him, crucify4717 him. Pilate4091 saith3004 unto them,846 Take2983 ye5210 him,846 and2532 crucify4717 him: for1063 I1473 find2147 no3756 fault156 in1722 him.846

7 The3588 Jews2453 answered611 him,846 We2249 have2192 a law,3551 and2532 by2596 our2257 law3551 he ought3784 to die,599 because3754 he made4160 himself1438 the Son5207 of God.2316

8 When3753 Pilate4091 therefore3767 heard191 that5126 saying,3056 he was the more afraid;5399 3123

9 And2532 went1525 again3825 into1519 the3588 judgment hall,4232 and2532 saith3004 unto Jesus,2424 Whence4159 art1488 thou?4771 But1161 Jesus2424 gave1325 him846 no3756 answer.612

10 Then3767 saith3004 Pilate4091 unto him,846 Speakest2980 thou not3756 unto me?1698 knowest1492 thou not3756 that3754 I have2192 power1849 to crucify4717 thee,4571 and2532 have2192 power1849 to release630 thee?4571

11 Jesus2424 answered,611 Thou3756 couldest have2192 no3762 power1849 at all against2596 me,1700 except1487 3361 it were2258 given1325 thee4571 from above: 509 therefore1223 5124 he that delivered3860 me3165 unto thee4571 hath2192 the greater3187 sin.266

12 And from1537 thenceforth5127 Pilate4091 sought2212 to release630 him:846 but1161 the3588 Jews2453 cried out,2896 saying,3004 If1437 thou let this man go,630 5126 thou art1488 not3756 Caesar's2541 friend:5384 whosoever3956 maketh4160 himself848 a king935 speaketh against483 Caesar.2541

13 When Pilate4091 therefore3767 heard191 that5126 saying,3056 he brought71 Jesus2424 forth,1854 and2532 sat down2523 in1909 the3588 judgment seat968 in1519 a place5117 that is called3004 the Pavement,3038 but1161 in the Hebrew,1447 Gabbatha.1042

14 And1161 it was2258 the preparation3904 of the3588 passover,3957 and1161 about5616 the sixth1623 hour:5610 and2532 he saith3004 unto the3588 Jews,2453 Behold2396 your5216 King!935

15 But1161 they3588 cried out,2905 Away with142 him, away with142 him, crucify4717 him.846 Pilate4091 saith3004 unto them,846 Shall I crucify4717 your5216 King?935 The3588 chief priests749 answered,611 We have2192 no3756 king935 but1508 Caesar.2541

16 Then5119 delivered3860 he him846 therefore3767 unto them846 to be crucified.4717 And1161 they took3880 Jesus,2424 and2532 led him away.520

17 And2532 he bearing941 his848 cross4716 went forth1831 into1519 a place5117 called3004 the place of a skull,2898 which3739 is called3004 in the Hebrew1447 Golgotha: 1115

18 Where3699 they crucified4717 him,846 and2532 two1417 other243 with3326 him,846 on either side one,1782 2532 1782 and1161 Jesus2424 in the midst.3319

19 And1161 Pilate4091 wrote1125 a title,5102 and2532 put5087 it on1909 the3588 cross.4716 And1161 the writing1125 was,2258 JESUS2424 OF NAZARETH3480 THE3588 KING935 OF THE3588 JEWS.2453

20 This5126 title5102 then3767 read314 many4183 of the3588 Jews:2453 for3754 the3588 place5117 where3699 Jesus2424 was crucified4717 was2258 nigh to1451 the3588 city:4172 and2532 it was2258 written1125 in Hebrew,1447 and Greek,1676 and Latin.4515

21 Then3767 said3004 the3588 chief priests749 of the3588 Jews2453 to Pilate,4091 Write1125 not,3361 The3588 king935 of the3588 Jews;2453 but235 that3754 he1565 said, I2036 am1510 King935 of the3588 Jews.2453

22 Pilate4091 answered,611 What3739 I have written1125 I have written.1125

23 Then3767 the3588 soldiers,4757 when3753 they had crucified4717 Jesus,2424 took2983 his846 garments,2440 and2532 made4160 four5064 parts,3313 to every1538 soldier4757 a part;3313 and2532 also his coat:5509 now1161 the3588 coat5509 was2258 without seam,729 woven5307 from1537 the3588 top509 throughout.1223 3650

24 They said2036 therefore3767 among4314 themselves,240 Let us not3361 rend4977 it,846 but235 cast lots2975 for4012 it,846 whose5101 it shall be:2071 that2443 the3588 Scripture1124 might be fulfilled,4137 which saith,3004 They parted1266 my3450 raiment2440 among them,1438 and2532 for1909 my3450 vesture2441 they did cast906 lots.2819 These things5023 therefore3767 3303 the3588 soldiers4757 did.4160

25 Now1161 there stood2476 by3844 the3588 cross4716 of Jesus2424 his846 mother,3384 and2532 his846 mother's3384 sister,79 Mary3137 the3588 wife of Cleophas,2832 and2532 Mary3137 Magdalene.3094

26 When Jesus2424 therefore3767 saw1492 his mother,3384 and2532 the3588 disciple3101 standing by,3936 whom3739 he loved,25 he saith3004 unto his848 mother,3384 Woman,1135 behold2400 thy4675 son!5207

27 Then1534 saith3004 he to the3588 disciple,3101 Behold2400 thy4675 mother! And3384 2532 from575 that1565 hour5610 that disciple3101 took2983 her846 unto1519 his own2398 home.

28 After3326 this,5124 Jesus2424 knowing1492 that3754 all things3956 were now2235 accomplished,5055 that2443 the3588 Scripture1124 might be fulfilled,5048 saith,3004 I thirst.1372

29 Now3767 there was set2749 a vessel4632 full3324 of vinegar:3690 and1161 they3588 filled4130 a sponge4699 with vinegar,3690 and2532 put it upon4060 hyssop,5301 and2532 put it4374 to his846 mouth.4750

30 When3753 Jesus2424 therefore3767 had received2983 the3588 vinegar,3690 he said,2036 It is finished: 5055 and2532 he bowed2827 his head,2776 and gave up3860 the3588 ghost.4151

31 The3588 Jews2453 therefore,3767 because1893 it was2258 the preparation,3904 that2443 the3588 bodies4983 should not3361 remain3306 upon1909 the3588 cross4716 on1722 the3588 sabbath day,4521 (for1063 that1565 sabbath4521 day2250 was2258 a high day,)3173 besought2065 Pilate4091 that2443 their846 legs4628 might be broken,2608 and2532 that they might be taken away.142

32 Then3767 came2064 the3588 soldiers,4757 and2532 broke2608 the3588 legs4628 of the3588 first,4413 and2532 of the3588 other243 which was crucified with4957 him.846

33 But1161 when they came2064 to1909 Jesus,2424 and5613 saw1492 that he846 was dead2348 already,2235 they broke2608 not3756 his846 legs: 4628

34 But235 one1520 of the3588 soldiers4757 with a spear3057 pierced3572 his846 side,4125 and2532 forthwith2117 came there out1831 blood129 and2532 water.5204

35 And2532 he that saw3708 it bare record,3140 and2532 his846 record3141 is2076 true:228 and he2548 knoweth1492 that3754 he saith3004 true,227 that2443 ye5210 might believe.4100

36 For1063 these things5023 were done,1096 that2443 the3588 Scripture1124 should be fulfilled,4137 A bone3747 of him846 shall not3756 be broken.4937

37 And2532 again3825 another2087 Scripture1124 saith,3004 They shall look3700 on1519 him whom3739 they pierced.1574

38 And1161 after3326 this5023 Joseph2501 of575 Arimathaea,707 being5607 a disciple3101 of Jesus,2424 but1161 secretly2928 for1223 fear5401 of the3588 Jews,2453 besought2065 Pilate4091 that2443 he might take away142 the3588 body4983 of Jesus:2424 and2532 Pilate4091 gave him leave.2010 He came2064 therefore,3767 and2532 took142 the3588 body4983 of Jesus.2424

39 And1161 there came2064 also2532 Nicodemus,3530 which at the first came2064 4412 to4314 Jesus2424 by night,3571 and brought5342 a mixture3395 of myrrh4666 and2532 aloes,250 about5616 a hundred1540 pound3046 weight.

40 Then3767 took2983 they the3588 body4983 of Jesus,2424 and2532 wound1210 it846 in linen clothes3608 with3326 the3588 spices,759 as2531 the manner1485 of the3588 Jews2453 is2076 to bury.1779

41 Now1161 in1722 the3588 place5117 where3699 he was crucified4717 there was2258 a garden;2779 and2532 in1722 the3588 garden2779 a new2537 sepulcher,3419 wherein1722 3739 was never man yet3764 3762 laid.5087

42 There1563 laid5087 they Jesus2424 therefore3767 because of1223 the3588 Jews'2453 preparation3904 day; for3754 the3588 sepulcher3419 was2258 nigh at hand.1451

Chapter 19

1 THEN Pilate had Jesus scourged.

2 A nd the soldiers wove a crown of thorns, and placed it on his head, and they covered him with purple robes;

3 And they said, Peace be to you, O king of the Jews! and they struck him on his cheeks.

4 Pilate again went outside and said to them, Behold, I bring him outside to you, so that you may know that I find not even one cause against him.

5 So Jesus went outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robes. And Pilate said to them, Behold the man!

6 When the high priests and the guards saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate said to them, You take him and crucify him; for I find no cause in him.

7 The Jews said to him, We have a law, and according to our law he is guilty of death, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate heard this saying, he was the more afraid;

9 So he entered again into the praetorium, and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Pilate said to him, Will you not speak even to me? Do you not know that I have the authority to release you, and I have the authority to crucify you?

11 Jesus said to him, You would have no authority whatever over me, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason the sin of him who delivered me to you is greater than yours.

12 And because of this, Pilate wanted to release him; but the Jews cried out, If you release this man you are not a friend of Caesar; for whoever makes himself a king is against Caesar.

13 When Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus outside; then he sat down on the judgment seat, at a place which is called the Stone Pavement but in Hebrew it is called, Gabbatha.

14 It was Friday of the passover, and it was about six o'clock; and he said to the Jews, Behold your king!

15 But they cried out, Take him away, take him away, crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The high priests said to him, We have no king except Caesar.

16 Then he delivered him to them to crucify him. So they took hold of Jesus and took him out,

17 Carrying his cross, to the place which is called The Skull, but in Hebrew it is called Golgotha;

18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between.

19 Pilate also wrote on a stone tablet, and placed it on his cross. And the writing was, THIS IS JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 And a great many Jews read this tablet, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew* and in Greek and in Roman.

21 The high priests then said to Pilate, Do not write that he is the king of the Jews; but that he said, I am the king of the Jews.

22 Pilate said, What I have written, I have written.

23 Now when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part to each of the soldiers; but his robe was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 So they said one to another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose lot it shall be. And the scripture was fulfilled, which said, They divided my clothes among them, and for my robe they cast lots. These things the soldiers did.

25 Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, and Mary of Cleopas, and Mary of Magdala.

26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son!

27 Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that very hour the disciple took her with him.

28 After these things Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished; and that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.

29 Now there was a pitcher full of vinegar placed there; so they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it on the point of a reed, and placed it on his mouth.

30 When Jesus drank the vinegar, he said, It is fulfilled; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now because it was Friday the Jews said, Let not these bodies remain on their crosses because the sabbath is dawning; for that sabbath was a great day. So they besought Pilate to have the legs of those who were crucified broken, and to have them lowered down.

32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first one, and of the other one who was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead already, so they did not break his legs.

34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35 And he who saw it testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows well that what he said is true, that you also may believe.

36 For these things happened that the scripture might be fulfilled, which said, Not even a bone shall be broken in him;

37 And again another scripture which said, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because of fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate granted him permission. So he came and took away the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, who at first had come to Jesus by night; and he brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pints.

40 So they took away the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the custom of the Jews in burial.

41 Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no man was yet laid.

42 So they laid Jesus there, because the sabbath was approaching and because the tomb was near.

1 Then5119 Pilate4091 therefore3767 took2983 Jesus,2424 and2532 scourged3146 him.

1 THEN Pilate had Jesus scourged.

2 And2532 the3588 soldiers4757 plaited4120 a crown4735 of1537 thorns,173 and put it on2007 his846 head,2776 and2532 they put on4016 him846 a purple4210 robe,2440

2 A nd the soldiers wove a crown of thorns, and placed it on his head, and they covered him with purple robes;

3 And they said, Peace be to you, O king of the Jews! and they struck him on his cheeks.

4 Pilate again went outside and said to them, Behold, I bring him outside to you, so that you may know that I find not even one cause against him.

5 Then3767 came1831 Jesus2424 forth,1854 wearing5409 the3588 crown4735 of thorns,174 and2532 the3588 purple4210 robe.2440 And2532 Pilate saith3004 unto them,846 Behold2396 the3588 man!444

5 So Jesus went outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robes. And Pilate said to them, Behold the man!

6 When the high priests and the guards saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate said to them, You take him and crucify him; for I find no cause in him.

7 The3588 Jews2453 answered611 him,846 We2249 have2192 a law,3551 and2532 by2596 our2257 law3551 he ought3784 to die,599 because3754 he made4160 himself1438 the Son5207 of God.2316

7 The Jews said to him, We have a law, and according to our law he is guilty of death, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 When3753 Pilate4091 therefore3767 heard191 that5126 saying,3056 he was the more afraid;5399 3123

8 When Pilate heard this saying, he was the more afraid;

9 And2532 went1525 again3825 into1519 the3588 judgment hall,4232 and2532 saith3004 unto Jesus,2424 Whence4159 art1488 thou?4771 But1161 Jesus2424 gave1325 him846 no3756 answer.612

9 So he entered again into the praetorium, and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Pilate said to him, Will you not speak even to me? Do you not know that I have the authority to release you, and I have the authority to crucify you?

11 Jesus2424 answered,611 Thou3756 couldest have2192 no3762 power1849 at all against2596 me,1700 except1487 3361 it were2258 given1325 thee4571 from above: 509 therefore1223 5124 he that delivered3860 me3165 unto thee4571 hath2192 the greater3187 sin.266

11 Jesus said to him, You would have no authority whatever over me, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason the sin of him who delivered me to you is greater than yours.

12 And because of this, Pilate wanted to release him; but the Jews cried out, If you release this man you are not a friend of Caesar; for whoever makes himself a king is against Caesar.

13 When Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus outside; then he sat down on the judgment seat, at a place which is called the Stone Pavement but in Hebrew it is called, Gabbatha.

14 And1161 it was2258 the preparation3904 of the3588 passover,3957 and1161 about5616 the sixth1623 hour:5610 and2532 he saith3004 unto the3588 Jews,2453 Behold2396 your5216 King!935

14 It was Friday of the passover, and it was about six o'clock; and he said to the Jews, Behold your king!

15 But they cried out, Take him away, take him away, crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The high priests said to him, We have no king except Caesar.

16 Then5119 delivered3860 he him846 therefore3767 unto them846 to be crucified.4717 And1161 they took3880 Jesus,2424 and2532 led him away.520

16 Then he delivered him to them to crucify him. So they took hold of Jesus and took him out,

17 And2532 he bearing941 his848 cross4716 went forth1831 into1519 a place5117 called3004 the place of a skull,2898 which3739 is called3004 in the Hebrew1447 Golgotha: 1115

17 Carrying his cross, to the place which is called The Skull, but in Hebrew it is called Golgotha;

18 Where3699 they crucified4717 him,846 and2532 two1417 other243 with3326 him,846 on either side one,1782 2532 1782 and1161 Jesus2424 in the midst.3319

18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between.

19 And1161 Pilate4091 wrote1125 a title,5102 and2532 put5087 it on1909 the3588 cross.4716 And1161 the writing1125 was,2258 JESUS2424 OF NAZARETH3480 THE3588 KING935 OF THE3588 JEWS.2453

19 Pilate also wrote on a stone tablet, and placed it on his cross. And the writing was, THIS IS JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 And a great many Jews read this tablet, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew* and in Greek and in Roman.

21 The high priests then said to Pilate, Do not write that he is the king of the Jews; but that he said, I am the king of the Jews.

22 Pilate4091 answered,611 What3739 I have written1125 I have written.1125

22 Pilate said, What I have written, I have written.

23 Now when the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part to each of the soldiers; but his robe was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 So they said one to another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose lot it shall be. And the scripture was fulfilled, which said, They divided my clothes among them, and for my robe they cast lots. These things the soldiers did.

25 Now1161 there stood2476 by3844 the3588 cross4716 of Jesus2424 his846 mother,3384 and2532 his846 mother's3384 sister,79 Mary3137 the3588 wife of Cleophas,2832 and2532 Mary3137 Magdalene.3094

25 Now there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, and Mary of Cleopas, and Mary of Magdala.

26 When Jesus2424 therefore3767 saw1492 his mother,3384 and2532 the3588 disciple3101 standing by,3936 whom3739 he loved,25 he saith3004 unto his848 mother,3384 Woman,1135 behold2400 thy4675 son!5207

26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing, he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son!

27 Then1534 saith3004 he to the3588 disciple,3101 Behold2400 thy4675 mother! And3384 2532 from575 that1565 hour5610 that disciple3101 took2983 her846 unto1519 his own2398 home.

27 Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that very hour the disciple took her with him.

28 After3326 this,5124 Jesus2424 knowing1492 that3754 all things3956 were now2235 accomplished,5055 that2443 the3588 Scripture1124 might be fulfilled,5048 saith,3004 I thirst.1372

28 After these things Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished; and that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.

29 Now there was a pitcher full of vinegar placed there; so they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it on the point of a reed, and placed it on his mouth.

30 When3753 Jesus2424 therefore3767 had received2983 the3588 vinegar,3690 he said,2036 It is finished: 5055 and2532 he bowed2827 his head,2776 and gave up3860 the3588 ghost.4151

30 When Jesus drank the vinegar, he said, It is fulfilled; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now because it was Friday the Jews said, Let not these bodies remain on their crosses because the sabbath is dawning; for that sabbath was a great day. So they besought Pilate to have the legs of those who were crucified broken, and to have them lowered down.

32 Then3767 came2064 the3588 soldiers,4757 and2532 broke2608 the3588 legs4628 of the3588 first,4413 and2532 of the3588 other243 which was crucified with4957 him.846

32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first one, and of the other one who was crucified with him.

33 But1161 when they came2064 to1909 Jesus,2424 and5613 saw1492 that he846 was dead2348 already,2235 they broke2608 not3756 his846 legs: 4628

33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead already, so they did not break his legs.

34 But235 one1520 of the3588 soldiers4757 with a spear3057 pierced3572 his846 side,4125 and2532 forthwith2117 came there out1831 blood129 and2532 water.5204

34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35 And2532 he that saw3708 it bare record,3140 and2532 his846 record3141 is2076 true:228 and he2548 knoweth1492 that3754 he saith3004 true,227 that2443 ye5210 might believe.4100

35 And he who saw it testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows well that what he said is true, that you also may believe.

36 For1063 these things5023 were done,1096 that2443 the3588 Scripture1124 should be fulfilled,4137 A bone3747 of him846 shall not3756 be broken.4937

36 For these things happened that the scripture might be fulfilled, which said, Not even a bone shall be broken in him;

37 And2532 again3825 another2087 Scripture1124 saith,3004 They shall look3700 on1519 him whom3739 they pierced.1574

37 And again another scripture which said, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because of fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate granted him permission. So he came and took away the body of Jesus.

39 And there came also Nicodemus, who at first had come to Jesus by night; and he brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pints.

40 Then3767 took2983 they the3588 body4983 of Jesus,2424 and2532 wound1210 it846 in linen clothes3608 with3326 the3588 spices,759 as2531 the manner1485 of the3588 Jews2453 is2076 to bury.1779

40 So they took away the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the custom of the Jews in burial.

41 Now1161 in1722 the3588 place5117 where3699 he was crucified4717 there was2258 a garden;2779 and2532 in1722 the3588 garden2779 a new2537 sepulcher,3419 wherein1722 3739 was never man yet3764 3762 laid.5087

41 Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no man was yet laid.

42 There1563 laid5087 they Jesus2424 therefore3767 because of1223 the3588 Jews'2453 preparation3904 day; for3754 the3588 sepulcher3419 was2258 nigh at hand.1451

42 So they laid Jesus there, because the sabbath was approaching and because the tomb was near.
