Chapter 3

1 Behold,2009 I will send7971 my messenger,4397 and he shall prepare6437 the way1870 before6440 me: and the Lord,113 whom834 ye859 seek,1245 shall suddenly6597 come935 to413 his temple,1964 even the messenger4397 of the covenant,1285 whom834 ye859 delight2655 in: behold,2009 he shall come,935 saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts.6635

2 But who4310 may abide3557 853 the day3117 of his coming?935 and who4310 shall stand5975 when he appeareth?7200 for3588 he1931 is like a refiner's6884 fire,784 and like fullers'3526 soap: 1287

3 And he shall sit3427 as a refiner6884 and purifier2891 of silver:3701 and he shall purify2891 853 the sons1121 of Levi,3878 and purge2212 them as gold2091 and silver,3701 that they may offer1961 5066 unto the LORD3068 an offering4503 in righteousness.6666

4 Then shall the offering4503 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem3389 be pleasant6149 unto the LORD,3068 as in the days3117 of old,5769 and as in former6931 years.8141

5 And I will come near7126 to413 you to judgment;4941 and I will be1961 a swift4116 witness5707 against the sorcerers,3784 and against the adulterers,5003 and against false8267 swearers,7650 and against those that oppress6231 the hireling7916 in his wages,7939 the widow,490 and the fatherless,3490 and that turn aside5186 the stranger1616 from his right, and fear3372 not3808 me, saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts.6635

6 For3588 I589 am the LORD,3068 I change8138 not;3808 therefore ye859 sons1121 of Jacob3290 are not3808 consumed.3615

7 Even from the days4480 3117 of your fathers1 ye are gone away5493 from mine ordinances,4480 2706 and have not3808 kept8104 them. Return7725 unto413 me, and I will return7725 unto413 you, saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts.6635 But ye said,559 Wherein4100 shall we return?7725

8 Will a man120 rob6906 God?430 Yet3588 ye859 have robbed6906 me. But ye say,559 Wherein4100 have we robbed6906 thee? In tithes4643 and offerings.8641

9 Ye859 are cursed779 with a curse:3994 for ye859 have robbed6906 me, even this whole3605 nation.1471

10 Bring935 ye853 all3605 the tithes4643 into413 the storehouse,1004 214 that there may be1961 meat2964 in mine house,1004 and prove974 me now4994 herewith,2063 saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts,6635 if518 I will not3808 open6605 you853 the windows699 of heaven,8064 and pour you out7324 a blessing,1293 that5704 there shall not1097 be room enough1767 to receive it.

11 And I will rebuke1605 the devourer398 for your sakes, and he shall not3808 destroy7843 853 the fruits6529 of your ground;127 neither3808 shall your vine1612 cast her fruit before the time7921 in the field,7704 saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts.6635

12 And all3605 nations1471 shall call you blessed:833 853 for3588 ye859 shall be1961 a delightful2656 land,776 saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts.6635

13 Your words1697 have been stout2388 against5921 me, saith559 the LORD.3068 Yet ye say,559 What4100 have we spoken1696 so much against5921 thee?

14 Ye have said,559 It is vain7723 to serve5647 God:430 and what4100 profit1215 is it that3588 we have kept8104 his ordinance,4931 and that3588 we have walked1980 mournfully6941 before4480 6440 the LORD3068 of hosts?6635

15 And now6258 we587 call the proud happy;833 2086 yea,1571 they that work6213 wickedness7564 are set up;1129 yea,1571 they that tempt974 God430 are even delivered.4422

16 Then227 they that feared3373 the LORD3068 spoke1696 often one376 to854 another:7453 and the LORD3068 hearkened,7181 and heard8085 it, and a book5612 of remembrance2146 was written3789 before6440 him for them that feared3372 the LORD,3068 and that thought2803 upon his name.8034

17 And they shall be1961 mine, saith559 the LORD3068 of hosts,6635 in that day3117 when834 I589 make up6213 my jewels;5459 and I will spare2550 5921 them, as834 a man376 spareth2550 5921 his own son1121 that serveth5647 him.

18 Then shall ye return,7725 and discern7200 between996 the righteous6662 and the wicked,7563 between996 him that serveth5647 God430 and him834 that serveth5647 him not.3808

Chapter 3

1 BEHOLD, I will send my messenger and he shall prepare the way before me; and he for whom you are waiting shall suddenly come to the temple of the LORD, even the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight; behold, he shall come, says the LORD of hosts.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap;

3 For he shall return to refine and purify the people like silver; and he shall cleanse the sons of Levi and purge them like gold and silver, that they may offer to the LORD an offering in righteousness.

4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant to the LORD, as in the days of old and as in former years.

5 And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely and against those who defraud the laborer of his wages, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow; and those who turn aside him who turns to me, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

6 For I am the LORD, I change not; but you sons of Jacob have not departed from your iniquities.

7 Even from the days of your fathers you have gone astray from my ordinances and have not obeyed them. Return to me and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, How shall we return?

8 Will a man defraud God as you have defrauded me? But you say, How have we defrauded thee? In tithes and offerings.

9 You are cursed with curses, and yet you defraud me.

10 Bring all the tithes into my storehouse that there may be food in my house, and prove me now in this, says the LORD of hosts, and I will open the windows of heaven for you and pour out blessings for you until you shall say, It is enough.

11 And I will rebuke the devourer, so that it shall not destroy the fruits of the land; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before the time in the field, says the LORD of hosts.

12 And all nations shall praise you, when you shall be a land of my delight, says the LORD of hosts.

13 Your words have been grievous against me, says the LORD. And you say, What have we spoken against thee?

14 You have said, We have served God in vain; what have we profited that we have kept his ordinances and that we have walked meekly before the LORD of hosts?

15 And henceforth we call the wicked blessed; yea, they that work wickedness are well established; they tempt God, and yet they are delivered.

16 These were the things which those who revered the LORD spoke often one to another; and the LORD gave ear and heard it, and he wrote it in a book of remembrance before him for those who revere him and for those who praise his name.

17 And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, on that day when I will assemble the people; and I will have pity on them as a man pities his own son who serves him.

18 Then shall you return and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between those who served God and those who served him not.
