Nehemiah

Chapter 4

1 BUT when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was grieved and very angry, and he mocked the Jews.

2 And he spoke before his brethren and the army of the Samaritans, and said, What are these Jews doing? They are boasting; let them sacrifice and eat on the day when they raise up these stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned!

3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was standing by him, and he said, No matter how much they build, I know, if a fox climbs it, he shall break down their stone wall.

4 Hear, O our God, for we have become ridiculed; and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of their captivity:

5 And forgive not their offenses, and let not their sins be blotted out from before thee; for they are enraged, and have opposed the building which we are doing.

6 But as for us, we shall continue to build the wall; and the people are building it, and all the wall is completed to the half thereof; for the people have a mind to work.

7 But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabians and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that a time was set to complete the walls of Jerusalem, and the breaches began to be closed, then they were exceedingly grieved,

8 And they all conspired together to come to fight against Jerusalem and to hinder the people from the work.

9 Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, that he may set watchmen over us day and night because of them.

10 And the Jews said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is diminishing, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come and attack them and slay them and cause their work to cease.

12 And when the Jews who dwelt with them came, they said to us, Behold, now ten times from all places where they dwell will they come and fight against you.

13 And they have already come and are standing behind the wall to fight against you with their arrows; so I divided the force after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 And I was afraid, and arose and said to the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them; remember the LORD, who is great and revered, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.

15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that the matter was known to us and that the LORD had brought their counsel to naught, we all returned and went up to the wall, every one to his work.

16 And from that day forth, half of my servants and half of the people were engaged in the work, and the other half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows, and the coats of mail; and the ministers stood behind the Jews and were building the wall.

17 And those who bore burdens with those who were laden, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 And the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and he stood up and built. And he that sounded the trumpet stood behind him.

19 And I said to the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, The work is great and extensive, and we are separated upon the wall and at a distance from each other.

20 In what place therefore you hear the sound of the trumpet, come to us there; our God shall fight for us.

21 And as for us, let us continue in our work; and half of us let them hold the spears from the rising of the sun till the stars appear.

22 Also at that time I said to the people, Let every one with his servant lodge in the midst of the streets of Jerusalem, and let them guard it in the night and in the day, so that the builders may do the work.

23 So neither I nor my brethren nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off his clothes for many full months, and each one did his duty.

1 Da aber Saneballat5571 und Tobia2900 und die Araber6163 und Ammoniter5984 und Asdoditer796 höreten, daß die Mauern2346 zu8085 Jerusalem3389 zugemacht waren5927, und daß sie die Lücken6555 angefangen2490 hatten5640 zu büßen, wurden2734 sie sehr3966 zornig.

2 Und935 machten allesamt3162 einen Bund7194 zu6213 Haufen, daß sie kämen und8442 stritten3898 wider Jerusalem3389 und machten drin einen Irrtum.

3 Wir aber beteten6419 zu unserm GOtt430 und5975 stelleten Hut4929 über sie Tag3119 und Nacht3915 gegen6440 sie.

4 Und Juda3063 sprach559: Die Kraft3581 der Träger5449 ist zu schwach3782, und des Staubs ist zu viel7235; wir können3201 an der Mauer2346 nicht bauen1129.

5 Unsere Widersacher6862 aber gedachten: Sie559 sollen‘s nicht wissen3045 noch sehen7200, bis wir mitten8432 unter8432 sie kommen935 und sie erwürgen2026 und das Werk4399 hindern7673.

6 Da4725 aber die Juden3064, die neben681 ihnen wohneten, kamen935 und6235 sagten559 es uns wohl zehnmal, aus allen Orten, da sie3427 um7725 uns wohneten,

7 da stellete ich5975 unten8482 an die Örter4725 hinter der Mauer2346 in die Graben das Volk5971 nach310 ihren Geschlechtern4940 mit ihren Schwertern2719, Spießen7420 und5975 Bogen7198.

8 Und3499 besah es und machte mich6440 auf6965 und sprach559 zu den Ratsherren und Obersten2715 und dem andern Volk5971: Fürchtet3372 euch3372 nicht vor ihnen! Gedenket2142 an7200 den großen1419, schrecklichen HErrn136 und streitet3898 für eure Brüder251, Söhne1121, Töchter1323, Weiber802 und Häuser1004.

9 Da aber unsere Feinde341 höreten, daß es uns8085 war kund3045 worden, machte GOtt430 ihren Rat6098 zunichte6565. Und wir kehrten alle wieder7725 zur Mauer2346; ein376 jeglicher zu seiner Arbeit4399.

10 Und3117 es geschah6213 hinfürder, daß der Jünglinge5288 die Hälfte2677 taten die Arbeit4399, die andere Hälfte2677 hielten2388 Spieße7420, Schilde4043, Bogen7198 und Panzer8302; und die Obersten8269 stunden hinter310 dem ganzen Hause1004 Juda3063,

11 die da baueten an der259 Mauer2346 und trugen6213 Last5447 von denen, die ihnen aufluden5375; mit einer259 Hand3027 taten sie1129 die Arbeit4399 und mit der andern hielten sie2388 die Waffen7973.

12 Und1129 ein376 jeglicher, der da bauete, hatte sein Schwert2719 an seine Lenden4975 gegürtet631 und1129 bauete also; und der mit der Posaune7782 blies8628, war neben mir681.

13 Und3499 ich sprach559 zu den Ratsherren und376 Obersten2715 und zum7235 andern251 Volk5971. Das Werk4399 ist groß und weit7342, und wir sind zerstreuet auf der Mauer2346, ferne7350 voneinander.

14 An welchem Ort4725 ihr6963 nun die Posaune7782 lauten höret, dahin versammelt6908 euch zu uns8085. Unser GOtt430 wird für uns streiten3898;

15 so wollen wir am Werk4399 arbeiten. Und6213 ihre Hälfte2677 hielt2388 die Spieße7420 von3318 dem Aufgang5927 der Morgenröte7837, bis die Sterne3556 hervorkamen.

16 Auch sprach559 ich zu8432 der Zeit6256 zum Volk5971: Ein376 jeglicher bleibe mit seinem Knaben5288 über Nacht3885 zu Jerusalem3389, daß wir des Nachts3915 der Hut4929 und des Tages3117 der Arbeit4399 warten.

17 Aber ich und meine Brüder251 und meine Knaben5288 und die4325 Männer an der Hut4929 hinter310 mir, wir582 zogen6584 unsere Kleider899 nicht aus; ein376 jeglicher ließ das Baden7973 anstehen.
