Luke

Chapter 9

1 THEN Jesus called his twelve, and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure diseases.

2 And he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

3 And he said to them, Do not take anything for the journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; nor have two shirts.

4 And into whatever house you enter, remain there, and depart from thence.

5 And whoever will not welcome you, when you leave that city, shake off even the sand from your feet for a testimony to them.

6 And the apostles went out, and travelled in villages and cities, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by his hand; and he was amazed, because some men said that John has risen from the dead.

8 But others, that Elijah has appeared; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen.

9 So Herod said, I have beheaded John; but who is this one concerning whom I hear these things? And he wanted to see him.

10 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything which they had done. And he took them all alone to a lonely place in Bethsaida.

11 When the people found it out, they went after him; and he received them, and spoke to them concerning the kingdom of God, and he healed those who were in need of healing.

12 And when the day began to wane, his disciples came up and said to him, Dismiss the people, that they may go to the villages around us and to the farms, to lodge there, and find food for themselves; because we are in a lonely place.

13 Jesus said to them, You give them to eat. But they said, We do not have more than five loaves of bread and two fish; unless we go and buy food for all this people;

14 For there were about five thousand men. Jesus said to them, Make them sit down in groups, fifty men in each group.

15 The disciples did so, and made them all sit down.

16 And Jesus took the five loaves of bread and the two fish, and looked up to heaven, and he blessed them, and broke and gave them to his disciples, to set before the people.

17 And they all ate and were filled; and they took up fragments of what was left over, twelve baskets.

18 While he prayed by himself, and his disciples were with him, he asked them and said, What do the people say concerning me that I am?

19 They answered and said to him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others that one of the old prophets has risen.

20 He said to them, But you, what do you say that I am? Simon answered and said, The Messiah (the anointed one of God).

21 But he cautioned them, and warned them not to say this to anyone.

22 And he said to them, The Son of man must suffer a great many things, and he will be rejected by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.

23 Then he said in the presence of everyone, He who wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross every day and follow me.

24 For he who wishes to save his life, shall lose it; but he who loses his life for my sake, he shall save it.

25 For how can a man be benefited, if he gain the whole world, but lose his own soul, or even weakens it?

26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man will be ashamed of him, when he comes with the glory of his Father, accompanied by his holy angels.

27 I tell you the truth, that there are men who stand here, who will not taste death, until they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about eight days after these words, Jesus took Simon, and James and John, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And while he prayed, the appearance of his face was changed, and his clothes became white and dazzling.

30 And behold, two men were speaking with him, who were Moses and Elijah;

31 Who appeared in glory, and spoke concerning his departure which was to end at Jerusalem.

32 And Simon and those who were with him were heavy with sleep; and when they awoke they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

33 And when they began to leave him, Simon said to Jesus, Teacher, it is better for us to remain here; and let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah; but he did not know what he was saying.

34 And when he had said these things, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were frightened when they saw Moses and Elijah enter into the cloud.

35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

36 And when the voice was heard, they found Jesus alone. And they kept silent, and in those days they did not tell any man what they saw.

37 And it came to pass the next day, as they came down from the mountain, they were met by many people.

38 And one of the men of that crowd cried out and said, O teacher, I beg you to have mercy on me. I have an only son,

39 And a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out, and gnashes his teeth and foams; and it hardly leaves him when it has tormented him.

40 And I besought your disciples to cast it out; and they could not.

41 Jesus answered and said, O crooked and faithless generation, how long will I be with you, and preach to you? Bring your son here.

42 And as he brought him, the demon attacked him and convulsed him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him to his father.

43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. And while every man wondered at everything which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

44 Treasure these words in your ears; for the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.

45 But they did not understand this word, because it was hidden from them so that they might not know it; and they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.

46 Then a reasoning entered into their minds, as to who was the greatest among them.

47 But Jesus knew the reasoning of their heart, and he took a boy and made him stand by him.

48 And he said to them, Everyone who receives a little boy like this one in my name, receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me; for whoever is least among you, let him be great.

49 And John answered and said, Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name; and we forbad him, because he did not come with us, as your follower.

50 Jesus said to them, Do not forbid; for he who is not against you is for you.

51 And it happened, when the days to go up on his journey were fulfilled, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

52 So he sent messengers ahead of him; and they went away and entered into a Samaritan village, to prepare for him.

53 But they did not receive him, because his face was set to go straight to Jerusalem.

54 When his disciples James and John saw it, they said to him, Our Lord, would you be willing that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?

55 He turned and rebuked them and said, You do not know of what spirit you are.

56 For the Son of man did not come to destroy lives, but to save. And they went to another village.

57 And while they were on the journey, a man said to him, My Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.

58 Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the fowl of the sky a shelter; but the Son of man has no place even to lay his head.

59 He said to another, Follow me; but he said to him, My Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.

60 Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but you go and preach the kingdom of God.

61 Another one said to him, I will follow you, my Lord; but permit me first to entrust my household to some one, and then come.

62 Jesus said to him, No man who puts his hand on the plough handle, and looks back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Chapter 9

1 Then1161 he called4779 his twelve1427 disciples3101 together,4779 and gave1325 them power1411 and authority1849 over1909 all3956 devils,1140 and to cure2323 diseases.3554

2 And he sent649 them to preach2784 the kingdom932 of God,2316 and to heal2390 the sick.770

3 And he said2036 to them, Take142 nothing3367 for your3588 journey,3598 neither3383 staves,4464 nor3383 money,4082 neither3383 bread,740 neither3383 money;694 neither3383 have2192 two1417 coats5509 apiece.303

4 And whatever3739 302 house3614 you enter1525 into,1519 there1563 abide,3306 and there1564 depart.1831

5 And whoever3745 302 will not receive1209 you, when you go1831 out of that city,4172 shake660 off660 the very2532 dust2868 from your5216 feet4228 for a testimony3142 against1909 them.

6 And they departed,1831 and went1330 through2596 the towns,2968 preaching2097 the gospel,2097 and healing2323 every3837 where.3837

7 Now1161 Herod2264 the tetrarch5076 heard191 of all3956 that was done1096 by him: and he was perplexed,1280 because1223 that it was said3004 of some,5100 that John2491 was risen1453 from the dead;3498

8 And of some,5100 that Elias2243 had appeared;5316 and of others,243 that one1520 of the old744 prophets4396 was risen450 again.450

9 And Herod2264 said,2036 John2491 have I beheaded:607 but who5101 is this,3778 of whom3739 I hear191 such3634 things? And he desired2212 to see1492 him.

10 And the apostles,652 when they were returned,5290 told1334 him all3745 that they had done.4160 And he took3880 them, and went5298 aside5298 privately2596 2398 into1519 a desert2048 place5117 belonging to the city4172 called2564 Bethsaida.966

11 And the people,3793 when they knew1097 it, followed190 him: and he received1209 them, and spoke2980 to them of the kingdom932 of God,2316 and healed2390 them that had2192 need5532 of healing.2322

12 And when the day2250 began756 to wear2827 away, then1161 came4334 the twelve,1427 and said2036 to him, Send630 the multitude3793 away,630 that they may go565 into1519 the towns2968 and country68 round2943 about,2945 and lodge,2647 and get2147 victuals:1979 for we are here5602 in a desert2048 place.5117

13 But he said2036 to them, Give1325 you them to eat.5315 And they said,2036 We have2076 no3756 more4119 but five4002 loaves740 and two1417 fishes;2486 except1509 we should go4198 and buy59 meat1033 for all3956 this5126 people.2992

14 For they were about5616 five4000 thousand4000 men.435 And he said2036 to his disciples,3101 Make2625 them sit2625 down2625 by fifties4004 in a company.2828

15 And they did4160 so,3779 and made347 them all537 sit347 down.347

16 Then1161 he took2983 the five4002 loaves740 and the two1417 fishes,2486 and looking308 up to heaven,3772 he blessed2127 them, and broke,2622 and gave1325 to the disciples3101 to set3908 before3908 the multitude.3793

17 And they did eat,5315 and were all3956 filled:5526 and there was taken142 up of fragments2801 that remained4052 to them twelve1427 baskets.2894

18 And it came1096 to pass, as he was alone2651 praying,4336 his disciples3101 were with him: and he asked1905 them, saying,3004 Whom5101 say3004 the people3793 that I am?1511

19 They answering611 said,2036 John2491 the Baptist;910 but some243 say,2036 Elias;2243 and others243 say, that one5100 of the old744 prophets4396 is risen450 again.450

20 He said2036 to them, But whom5101 say3004 you that I am?1511 Peter4074 answering611 said,2036 The Christ5547 of God.2316

21 And he straightly charged2008 them, and commanded3853 them to tell2036 no3367 man3367 that thing;

22 Saying,2036 The Son5207 of man444 must1163 suffer3958 many4183 things, and be rejected593 of the elders4245 and chief749 priests749 and scribes,1122 and be slain,615 and be raised1453 the third5154 day.2250

23 And he said3004 to them all,3956 If1487 any5100 man will2309 come2064 after3694 me, let him deny533 himself,1438 and take142 up his cross4716 daily,2596 2250 and follow190 me.

24 For whoever3739 302 will2309 save4982 his life5590 shall lose622 it: but whoever3739 302 will lose622 his life5590 for my sake,1752 the same3778 shall save4982 it.

25 For what5101 is a man444 advantaged,5623 if he gain2770 the whole3650 world,2889 and lose622 himself,1438 or2228 be cast2210 away?2210

26 For whoever3739 302 shall be ashamed1870 of me and of my words,3056 of him shall the Son5207 of man444 be ashamed,1870 when3752 he shall come2064 in his own glory,1391 and in his Father's,3962 and of the holy40 angels.32

27 But I tell3004 you of a truth,230 there be some5100 standing2476 here,5602 which3739 shall not taste1089 of death,2288 till2193 they see1492 the kingdom932 of God.2316

28 And it came1096 to pass about5616 an eight3638 days2250 after3326 these5128 sayings,3056 he took3880 Peter4074 and John2491 and James,2385 and went305 up into1519 a mountain3735 to pray.4336

29 And as he prayed,4336 the fashion1491 of his countenance4383 was altered,1096 2097 and his raiment2441 was white3022 and glistering.1823

30 And, behold,2400 there talked4814 with him two1417 men,435 which3748 were Moses3475 and Elias:2243

31 Who3739 appeared3700 in glory,1391 and spoke3004 of his decease1841 which3739 he should3195 accomplish4137 at1722 Jerusalem.2419

32 But Peter4074 and they that were with him were heavy916 with sleep:5258 and when they were awake,1235 they saw1492 his glory,1391 and the two1417 men435 that stood4921 with him.

33 And it came1096 to pass, as they departed1316 from him, Peter4074 said2036 to Jesus,2424 Master,1988 it is good2570 for us to be here:5602 and let us make4160 three5140 tabernacles;4633 one3391 for you, and one3391 for Moses,3475 and one3391 for Elias:2243 not knowing1492 what3739 he said.3004

34 While he thus5023 spoke,3004 there came1096 a cloud,3507 and overshadowed1982 them: and they feared5399 as they entered1525 into1519 the cloud.3507

35 And there came1096 a voice5456 out of the cloud,3507 saying,3004 This3778 is my beloved27 Son:5207 hear191 him.

36 And when1722 3588 the voice5456 was past,1096 Jesus2424 was found2147 alone.3441 And they kept4601 it close,4601 and told518 no3762 man3762 in those1565 days2250 any3762 of those things which3739 they had seen.3708

37 And it came1096 to pass, that on1722 the next1836 day,2250 when they were come2718 down2718 from the hill,3735 much4183 people3793 met4876 him.

38 And, behold,2400 a man435 of the company3793 cried310 out, saying,3004 Master,1320 I beseech1189 you, look1914 on my son:5207 for he is my3427 only3439 child.3439

39 And, see,2400 a spirit4151 takes2983 him, and he suddenly1810 cries2896 out; and it tears4682 him that he foams876 again,3326 and bruising4937 him hardly3425 departs672 from him.

40 And I sought1189 your disciples3101 to cast1544 him out; and they could1410 not.

41 And Jesus2424 answering611 said,2036 O faithless571 and perverse1294 generation,1074 how2193 long2193 shall I be with you, and suffer430 you? Bring4317 your son5207 here.5602

42 And as he was yet2089 a coming,4334 the devil1140 threw4952 him down, and tare4952 him. And Jesus2424 rebuked2008 the unclean169 spirit,4151 and healed2390 the child,3816 and delivered591 him again591 to his father.3962

43 And they were all3956 amazed1605 at1909 the mighty3168 power3168 of God.2316 But while they wondered2296 every3956 one3956 at1909 all3956 things which3739 Jesus2424 did,4160 he said2036 to his disciples,3101

44 Let these5128 sayings3056 sink5087 down into1519 your5216 ears:3775 for the Son5207 of man444 shall be delivered3860 into1519 the hands5495 of men.444

45 But they understood50 not this5127 saying,4487 and it was hid3871 from them, that they perceived143 it not: and they feared5399 to ask2065 him of that saying.4487

46 Then1161 there arose1525 a reasoning1261 among1722 them, which5101 of them should be greatest.3187

47 And Jesus,2424 perceiving1492 the thought1261 of their heart,2588 took1949 a child,3813 and set2476 him by him,

48 And said2036 to them, Whoever3739 1437 shall receive1209 this5124 child3813 in my name3686 receives1209 me: and whoever3739 1437 shall receive1209 me receives1209 him that sent649 me: for he that is least3398 among1722 you all,3956 the same3778 shall be great.3173

49 And John2491 answered611 and said,2036 Master,1988 we saw1492 one5100 casting1544 out devils1140 in your name;3686 and we forbade2967 him, because3754 he follows190 not with us.

50 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Forbid2967 him not: for he that is not against2596 us is for us.

51 And it came1096 to pass, when1722 3588 the time2250 was come4845 that he should be received354 up, he steadfastly4741 set4741 his face4383 to go4198 to Jerusalem,2419

52 And sent649 messengers32 before4253 his face:4383 and they went,4198 and entered1525 into1519 a village2968 of the Samaritans,4541 to make2090 ready2090 for him.

53 And they did not receive1209 him, because3754 his face4383 was as though he would go4198 to Jerusalem.2419

54 And when his disciples3101 James2385 and John2491 saw1492 this, they said,2036 Lord,2962 will2309 you that we command2036 fire4442 to come2597 down2597 from heaven,3772 and consume355 them, even2532 as Elias2243 did?4160

55 But he turned,4762 and rebuked2008 them, and said,2036 You know1492 not what3634 manner3634 of spirit4151 you are of.

56 For the Son5207 of man444 is not come2064 to destroy622 men's444 lives,5590 but to save4982 them. And they went4198 to another2087 village.2968

57 And it came1096 to pass, that, as they went4198 in the way,3598 a certain5100 man said2036 to him, Lord,2962 I will follow190 you wherever3699 302 you go.565

58 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Foxes258 have2192 holes,5454 and birds4071 of the air3772 have nests;2682 but the Son5207 of man444 has2192 not where4226 to lay2827 his head.2776

59 And he said2036 to another,2087 Follow190 me. But he said,2036 Lord,2962 suffer2010 me first4412 to go565 and bury2290 my father.3962

60 Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Let863 the dead3498 bury2290 their dead:3498 but go565 you and preach1229 the kingdom932 of God.2316

61 And another2087 also2532 said,2036 Lord,2962 I will follow190 you; but let2010 me first4412 go bid657 them farewell,657 which are at1519 home at my house.3624

62 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, No3762 man,3762 having5607 1722 put1911 his hand5495 to the plough,723 and looking991 back,3694 is fit2111 for the kingdom932 of God.2316

Chapter 9

1 THEN Jesus called his twelve, and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure diseases.

1 Then1161 he called4779 his twelve1427 disciples3101 together,4779 and gave1325 them power1411 and authority1849 over1909 all3956 devils,1140 and to cure2323 diseases.3554

2 And he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

2 And he sent649 them to preach2784 the kingdom932 of God,2316 and to heal2390 the sick.770

3 And he said to them, Do not take anything for the journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; nor have two shirts.

3 And he said2036 to them, Take142 nothing3367 for your3588 journey,3598 neither3383 staves,4464 nor3383 money,4082 neither3383 bread,740 neither3383 money;694 neither3383 have2192 two1417 coats5509 apiece.303

4 And into whatever house you enter, remain there, and depart from thence.

4 And whatever3739 302 house3614 you enter1525 into,1519 there1563 abide,3306 and there1564 depart.1831

5 And whoever will not welcome you, when you leave that city, shake off even the sand from your feet for a testimony to them.

5 And whoever3745 302 will not receive1209 you, when you go1831 out of that city,4172 shake660 off660 the very2532 dust2868 from your5216 feet4228 for a testimony3142 against1909 them.

6 And the apostles went out, and travelled in villages and cities, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere.

6 And they departed,1831 and went1330 through2596 the towns,2968 preaching2097 the gospel,2097 and healing2323 every3837 where.3837

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by his hand; and he was amazed, because some men said that John has risen from the dead.

7 Now1161 Herod2264 the tetrarch5076 heard191 of all3956 that was done1096 by him: and he was perplexed,1280 because1223 that it was said3004 of some,5100 that John2491 was risen1453 from the dead;3498

8 But others, that Elijah has appeared; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen.

8 And of some,5100 that Elias2243 had appeared;5316 and of others,243 that one1520 of the old744 prophets4396 was risen450 again.450

9 So Herod said, I have beheaded John; but who is this one concerning whom I hear these things? And he wanted to see him.

9 And Herod2264 said,2036 John2491 have I beheaded:607 but who5101 is this,3778 of whom3739 I hear191 such3634 things? And he desired2212 to see1492 him.

10 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything which they had done. And he took them all alone to a lonely place in Bethsaida.

10 And the apostles,652 when they were returned,5290 told1334 him all3745 that they had done.4160 And he took3880 them, and went5298 aside5298 privately2596 2398 into1519 a desert2048 place5117 belonging to the city4172 called2564 Bethsaida.966

11 When the people found it out, they went after him; and he received them, and spoke to them concerning the kingdom of God, and he healed those who were in need of healing.

11 And the people,3793 when they knew1097 it, followed190 him: and he received1209 them, and spoke2980 to them of the kingdom932 of God,2316 and healed2390 them that had2192 need5532 of healing.2322

12 And when the day began to wane, his disciples came up and said to him, Dismiss the people, that they may go to the villages around us and to the farms, to lodge there, and find food for themselves; because we are in a lonely place.

13 Jesus said to them, You give them to eat. But they said, We do not have more than five loaves of bread and two fish; unless we go and buy food for all this people;

14 For there were about five thousand men. Jesus said to them, Make them sit down in groups, fifty men in each group.

14 For they were about5616 five4000 thousand4000 men.435 And he said2036 to his disciples,3101 Make2625 them sit2625 down2625 by fifties4004 in a company.2828

15 The disciples did so, and made them all sit down.

15 And they did4160 so,3779 and made347 them all537 sit347 down.347

16 And Jesus took the five loaves of bread and the two fish, and looked up to heaven, and he blessed them, and broke and gave them to his disciples, to set before the people.

16 Then1161 he took2983 the five4002 loaves740 and the two1417 fishes,2486 and looking308 up to heaven,3772 he blessed2127 them, and broke,2622 and gave1325 to the disciples3101 to set3908 before3908 the multitude.3793

17 And they all ate and were filled; and they took up fragments of what was left over, twelve baskets.

17 And they did eat,5315 and were all3956 filled:5526 and there was taken142 up of fragments2801 that remained4052 to them twelve1427 baskets.2894

18 While he prayed by himself, and his disciples were with him, he asked them and said, What do the people say concerning me that I am?

18 And it came1096 to pass, as he was alone2651 praying,4336 his disciples3101 were with him: and he asked1905 them, saying,3004 Whom5101 say3004 the people3793 that I am?1511

19 They answered and said to him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others that one of the old prophets has risen.

19 They answering611 said,2036 John2491 the Baptist;910 but some243 say,2036 Elias;2243 and others243 say, that one5100 of the old744 prophets4396 is risen450 again.450

20 He said to them, But you, what do you say that I am? Simon answered and said, The Messiah (the anointed one of God).

20 He said2036 to them, But whom5101 say3004 you that I am?1511 Peter4074 answering611 said,2036 The Christ5547 of God.2316

21 But he cautioned them, and warned them not to say this to anyone.

21 And he straightly charged2008 them, and commanded3853 them to tell2036 no3367 man3367 that thing;

22 And he said to them, The Son of man must suffer a great many things, and he will be rejected by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.

22 Saying,2036 The Son5207 of man444 must1163 suffer3958 many4183 things, and be rejected593 of the elders4245 and chief749 priests749 and scribes,1122 and be slain,615 and be raised1453 the third5154 day.2250

23 Then he said in the presence of everyone, He who wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross every day and follow me.

23 And he said3004 to them all,3956 If1487 any5100 man will2309 come2064 after3694 me, let him deny533 himself,1438 and take142 up his cross4716 daily,2596 2250 and follow190 me.

24 For he who wishes to save his life, shall lose it; but he who loses his life for my sake, he shall save it.

24 For whoever3739 302 will2309 save4982 his life5590 shall lose622 it: but whoever3739 302 will lose622 his life5590 for my sake,1752 the same3778 shall save4982 it.

25 For how can a man be benefited, if he gain the whole world, but lose his own soul, or even weakens it?

25 For what5101 is a man444 advantaged,5623 if he gain2770 the whole3650 world,2889 and lose622 himself,1438 or2228 be cast2210 away?2210

26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of man will be ashamed of him, when he comes with the glory of his Father, accompanied by his holy angels.

26 For whoever3739 302 shall be ashamed1870 of me and of my words,3056 of him shall the Son5207 of man444 be ashamed,1870 when3752 he shall come2064 in his own glory,1391 and in his Father's,3962 and of the holy40 angels.32

27 I tell you the truth, that there are men who stand here, who will not taste death, until they see the kingdom of God.

27 But I tell3004 you of a truth,230 there be some5100 standing2476 here,5602 which3739 shall not taste1089 of death,2288 till2193 they see1492 the kingdom932 of God.2316

28 And it came to pass about eight days after these words, Jesus took Simon, and James and John, and went up into a mountain to pray.

28 And it came1096 to pass about5616 an eight3638 days2250 after3326 these5128 sayings,3056 he took3880 Peter4074 and John2491 and James,2385 and went305 up into1519 a mountain3735 to pray.4336

29 And while he prayed, the appearance of his face was changed, and his clothes became white and dazzling.

29 And as he prayed,4336 the fashion1491 of his countenance4383 was altered,1096 2097 and his raiment2441 was white3022 and glistering.1823

30 And behold, two men were speaking with him, who were Moses and Elijah;

30 And, behold,2400 there talked4814 with him two1417 men,435 which3748 were Moses3475 and Elias:2243

31 Who appeared in glory, and spoke concerning his departure which was to end at Jerusalem.

31 Who3739 appeared3700 in glory,1391 and spoke3004 of his decease1841 which3739 he should3195 accomplish4137 at1722 Jerusalem.2419

32 And Simon and those who were with him were heavy with sleep; and when they awoke they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

32 But Peter4074 and they that were with him were heavy916 with sleep:5258 and when they were awake,1235 they saw1492 his glory,1391 and the two1417 men435 that stood4921 with him.

33 And when they began to leave him, Simon said to Jesus, Teacher, it is better for us to remain here; and let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah; but he did not know what he was saying.

34 And when he had said these things, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were frightened when they saw Moses and Elijah enter into the cloud.

34 While he thus5023 spoke,3004 there came1096 a cloud,3507 and overshadowed1982 them: and they feared5399 as they entered1525 into1519 the cloud.3507

35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

35 And there came1096 a voice5456 out of the cloud,3507 saying,3004 This3778 is my beloved27 Son:5207 hear191 him.

36 And when the voice was heard, they found Jesus alone. And they kept silent, and in those days they did not tell any man what they saw.

36 And when1722 3588 the voice5456 was past,1096 Jesus2424 was found2147 alone.3441 And they kept4601 it close,4601 and told518 no3762 man3762 in those1565 days2250 any3762 of those things which3739 they had seen.3708

37 And it came to pass the next day, as they came down from the mountain, they were met by many people.

37 And it came1096 to pass, that on1722 the next1836 day,2250 when they were come2718 down2718 from the hill,3735 much4183 people3793 met4876 him.

38 And one of the men of that crowd cried out and said, O teacher, I beg you to have mercy on me. I have an only son,

38 And, behold,2400 a man435 of the company3793 cried310 out, saying,3004 Master,1320 I beseech1189 you, look1914 on my son:5207 for he is my3427 only3439 child.3439

39 And a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out, and gnashes his teeth and foams; and it hardly leaves him when it has tormented him.

39 And, see,2400 a spirit4151 takes2983 him, and he suddenly1810 cries2896 out; and it tears4682 him that he foams876 again,3326 and bruising4937 him hardly3425 departs672 from him.

40 And I besought your disciples to cast it out; and they could not.

40 And I sought1189 your disciples3101 to cast1544 him out; and they could1410 not.

41 Jesus answered and said, O crooked and faithless generation, how long will I be with you, and preach to you? Bring your son here.

41 And Jesus2424 answering611 said,2036 O faithless571 and perverse1294 generation,1074 how2193 long2193 shall I be with you, and suffer430 you? Bring4317 your son5207 here.5602

42 And as he brought him, the demon attacked him and convulsed him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him to his father.

42 And as he was yet2089 a coming,4334 the devil1140 threw4952 him down, and tare4952 him. And Jesus2424 rebuked2008 the unclean169 spirit,4151 and healed2390 the child,3816 and delivered591 him again591 to his father.3962

43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. And while every man wondered at everything which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

43 And they were all3956 amazed1605 at1909 the mighty3168 power3168 of God.2316 But while they wondered2296 every3956 one3956 at1909 all3956 things which3739 Jesus2424 did,4160 he said2036 to his disciples,3101

44 Treasure these words in your ears; for the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.

44 Let these5128 sayings3056 sink5087 down into1519 your5216 ears:3775 for the Son5207 of man444 shall be delivered3860 into1519 the hands5495 of men.444

45 But they did not understand this word, because it was hidden from them so that they might not know it; and they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.

45 But they understood50 not this5127 saying,4487 and it was hid3871 from them, that they perceived143 it not: and they feared5399 to ask2065 him of that saying.4487

46 Then a reasoning entered into their minds, as to who was the greatest among them.

46 Then1161 there arose1525 a reasoning1261 among1722 them, which5101 of them should be greatest.3187

47 But Jesus knew the reasoning of their heart, and he took a boy and made him stand by him.

47 And Jesus,2424 perceiving1492 the thought1261 of their heart,2588 took1949 a child,3813 and set2476 him by him,

48 And he said to them, Everyone who receives a little boy like this one in my name, receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me; for whoever is least among you, let him be great.

49 And John answered and said, Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name; and we forbad him, because he did not come with us, as your follower.

49 And John2491 answered611 and said,2036 Master,1988 we saw1492 one5100 casting1544 out devils1140 in your name;3686 and we forbade2967 him, because3754 he follows190 not with us.

50 Jesus said to them, Do not forbid; for he who is not against you is for you.

50 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Forbid2967 him not: for he that is not against2596 us is for us.

51 And it happened, when the days to go up on his journey were fulfilled, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

51 And it came1096 to pass, when1722 3588 the time2250 was come4845 that he should be received354 up, he steadfastly4741 set4741 his face4383 to go4198 to Jerusalem,2419

52 So he sent messengers ahead of him; and they went away and entered into a Samaritan village, to prepare for him.

52 And sent649 messengers32 before4253 his face:4383 and they went,4198 and entered1525 into1519 a village2968 of the Samaritans,4541 to make2090 ready2090 for him.

53 But they did not receive him, because his face was set to go straight to Jerusalem.

53 And they did not receive1209 him, because3754 his face4383 was as though he would go4198 to Jerusalem.2419

54 When his disciples James and John saw it, they said to him, Our Lord, would you be willing that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?

54 And when his disciples3101 James2385 and John2491 saw1492 this, they said,2036 Lord,2962 will2309 you that we command2036 fire4442 to come2597 down2597 from heaven,3772 and consume355 them, even2532 as Elias2243 did?4160

55 He turned and rebuked them and said, You do not know of what spirit you are.

55 But he turned,4762 and rebuked2008 them, and said,2036 You know1492 not what3634 manner3634 of spirit4151 you are of.

56 For the Son of man did not come to destroy lives, but to save. And they went to another village.

56 For the Son5207 of man444 is not come2064 to destroy622 men's444 lives,5590 but to save4982 them. And they went4198 to another2087 village.2968

57 And while they were on the journey, a man said to him, My Lord, I will follow you wherever you go.

57 And it came1096 to pass, that, as they went4198 in the way,3598 a certain5100 man said2036 to him, Lord,2962 I will follow190 you wherever3699 302 you go.565

58 Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the fowl of the sky a shelter; but the Son of man has no place even to lay his head.

58 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Foxes258 have2192 holes,5454 and birds4071 of the air3772 have nests;2682 but the Son5207 of man444 has2192 not where4226 to lay2827 his head.2776

59 He said to another, Follow me; but he said to him, My Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.

59 And he said2036 to another,2087 Follow190 me. But he said,2036 Lord,2962 suffer2010 me first4412 to go565 and bury2290 my father.3962

60 Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but you go and preach the kingdom of God.

60 Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Let863 the dead3498 bury2290 their dead:3498 but go565 you and preach1229 the kingdom932 of God.2316

61 Another one said to him, I will follow you, my Lord; but permit me first to entrust my household to some one, and then come.

61 And another2087 also2532 said,2036 Lord,2962 I will follow190 you; but let2010 me first4412 go bid657 them farewell,657 which are at1519 home at my house.3624

62 Jesus said to him, No man who puts his hand on the plough handle, and looks back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

62 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, No3762 man,3762 having5607 1722 put1911 his hand5495 to the plough,723 and looking991 back,3694 is fit2111 for the kingdom932 of God.2316
