Chapter 33

1 AND Jacob raised his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maids.

2 Then he brought the maids and their children to the front, and Leah and her children next, and kept Rachel and Joseph in the rear.

3 And he himself went on before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him; and they wept.

5 Then Esau raised his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, Where did you get these? And Jacob said to him, They are the children whom God has graciously given your servant.

6 Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

7 And Leah also with her children drew near, and bowed themselves; and afterwards came Rachel and Joseph who also drew near, and bowed themselves.

8 And Esau said to Jacob, Where did you get all this company which I met? And Jacob said to him, Because I have found favor in the sight of my lord.

9 Then Esau said to him, I have plenty, my brother; keep what you have to yourself.

10 But Jacob said to him, If now I have found mercy in your sight, then receive my present from my hands; because now I have seen your face, as I saw the face of an angel, and you were pleased with me.

11 Now accept my blessings that I have brought to you; because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And Jacob urged him, and he did accept them.

12 Then Esau said to him, Let us depart, and go, and I will go before you.

13 But Jacob said. My lord knows that the children are too young, and that the flocks and herds with young are with me; and if I should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

14 Let my lord pass before his servant, and I will travel slowly, according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.

15 And Esau said to him, Let me leave with you some of the men that are with me. But Jacob said, What need have I for them? Let me find mercy in the sight of my lord.

16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house, and made sheepfolds for his cattle; therefore he called the name of the place Succoth.

18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came forth from Padan-aram; and encamped before the city.

19 And he bought a parcel of a field from the children of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred ewes.

20 And he pitched his tent there, and erected an altar, and called it El-Alaha di Israel (God, the God of Israel).

1 Когда же Иаков посмотрел вдаль и увидел, что навстречу ему идет Исав и с ним — четыреста человек, он велел детям идти рядом с их матерями: Лией, Рахилью и его двумя женами-рабынями,

2 причем поставил рабынь и детей их первыми, Лию и детей ее — за ними, а Рахиль и Иосифа — позади всех.

3 Сам же он вышел вперед и семь раз поклонился до земли, пока не подошел к брату своему.

4 Но Исав побежал ему навстречу, обнял Иакова и, прижав к груди, целовал его; и плакали оба.

5 А когда Исав увидел женщин и детей, он спросил: «Кто это с тобой?» «Дети, которых Бог по милости Своей даровал рабу твоему», — ответил Иаков.

6 Подошли тогда рабыни со своими детьми и поклонились Исаву;

7 следом подошла и поклонилась Лия со своими детьми, и последними это сделали Иосиф и Рахиль.

8 «По дороге я встретил множество людей и скота. Что это значит?» — спросил тогда Исав. «Я надеялся снискать твое благоволение, господин мой», — ответил Иаков.

9 «У меня всего довольно, брат мой, — возразил Исав, — пусть твое у тебя и останется».

10 «О нет! — настаивал Иаков. — Если благоволишь мне, прими сей дар от меня! Ведь когда лицо твое я увидел, я словно Божий лик увидел: ты так добр ко мне!

11 То, что передано тебе, пожалуйста, прими как дар! Бог щедрою рукой одарил меня, и у меня есть всё». Так он упрашивал Исава, пока тот не согласился.

12 После того Исав сказал: «Отправимся в путь, и я со своими людьми пойду впереди».

13 «Ты сам видишь, господин мой, — ответил Иаков, — что дети еще слабы. Заботят меня и дойные коровы, и овцы с их приплодом: если гнать их быстро хотя бы один день — падут все.

14 Пусть бы господин мой шел, не задерживаясь из-за меня, раба своего. А я пойду неспешно, как идет скот, который предо мною, и как идут дети, и приду к господину моему в Сеир».

15 «Так я, по крайней мере, оставлю кого-то из людей своих сопровождать тебя», — предложил Исав. «Есть ли нужда в том, чтобы еще и такую любезность оказал мне мой господин?» — ответил на это Иаков.

16 В тот же день Исав отправился в обратный путь, в Сеир,

17 а Иаков пошел в Суккот. Там он построил себе дом и сделал крытые загоны для скота своего (потому и назвали это место Суккот).

18 Покинув Паддан-Арам, Иаков благополучно дошел до города Шехема, что в Ханаане, и устроил свою стоянку недалеко от города.

19 У сыновей Хамора, Шехемова отца, он купил за сто монет участок земли, на котором и разбил свой шатер.

20 Там поставил он жертвенник и назвал его Эль-Элохе-Исраэль.

8 And Esau said to Jacob, Where did you get all this company which I met? And Jacob said to him, Because I have found favor in the sight of my lord.

8 «По дороге я встретил множество людей и скота. Что это значит?» — спросил тогда Исав. «Я надеялся снискать твое благоволение, господин мой», — ответил Иаков.

9 Then Esau said to him, I have plenty, my brother; keep what you have to yourself.

9 «У меня всего довольно, брат мой, — возразил Исав, — пусть твое у тебя и останется».

10 «О нет! — настаивал Иаков. — Если благоволишь мне, прими сей дар от меня! Ведь когда лицо твое я увидел, я словно Божий лик увидел: ты так добр ко мне!

11 Now accept my blessings that I have brought to you; because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And Jacob urged him, and he did accept them.

11 То, что передано тебе, пожалуйста, прими как дар! Бог щедрою рукой одарил меня, и у меня есть всё». Так он упрашивал Исава, пока тот не согласился.

12 Then Esau said to him, Let us depart, and go, and I will go before you.

12 После того Исав сказал: «Отправимся в путь, и я со своими людьми пойду впереди».

13 But Jacob said. My lord knows that the children are too young, and that the flocks and herds with young are with me; and if I should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

13 «Ты сам видишь, господин мой, — ответил Иаков, — что дети еще слабы. Заботят меня и дойные коровы, и овцы с их приплодом: если гнать их быстро хотя бы один день — падут все.
