Chapter 22

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

2 And when they heard him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue (Aramaic), they were the more quiet: And he said,

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 And it came to pass as I drew near to Damascus, at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and was in accord with his slayers, and was in charge of the garments of them who stoned him.

21 Then he said to me, Depart: for I will send you afar to preach to the Gentiles.

22 They had given Paul audience up to this word, and then they lifted up their voices, and cried out, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried out and cast off their robes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and ordered that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.

25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes.

28 And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it.

29 Immediately those who were ready to scourge him left him alone, and the captain was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman citizen, because he had bound him.

30 The next day, because he desired to know the truthfulness of the charges which the Jews had brought against Paul, he unbound him and commanded the high priests and all their council to appear before him, and he took Paul and brought him down, and set him before them.

Chapter 22

1 Men,435 brothers,80 and fathers,3962 hear191 you my defense627 which I make now3568 to you.

2 (And when they heard191 that he spoke4377 in the Hebrew1446 tongue1258 to them, they kept3930 the more3123 silence:2271 and he said,5346)

3 I am1510 truly3303 a man435 which am1510 a Jew,2453 born1080 in Tarsus,5019 a city in Cilicia,2791 yet brought397 up in this5026 city4172 at3844 the feet4228 of Gamaliel,1059 and taught3811 according2596 to the perfect195 manner195 of the law3551 of the fathers,3971 and was zealous2207 toward God,2316 as you all3956 are this4594 day.4594

4 And I persecuted1377 this5026 way3598 to the death,2288 binding1195 and delivering3860 into1519 prisons5438 both5037 men435 and women.1135

5 As also2532 the high749 priest749 does bear3140 me witness,3140 and all3956 the estate of the elders:4244 from whom3739 also2532 I received1209 letters1992 to the brothers,80 and went4198 to Damascus,1154 to bring71 them which were there1566 bound1210 to Jerusalem,2419 for to be punished.5097

6 And it came1096 to pass, that, as I made4198 my journey,4198 and was come1448 near1448 to Damascus1154 about4012 noon,3314 suddenly1810 there shone4015 from heaven3772 a great2425 light5457 round4015 about4012 me.

7 And I fell4098 to the ground,1475 and heard191 a voice5456 saying3004 to me, Saul,4569 Saul,4569 why5101 persecute1377 you me?

8 And I answered,611 Who5101 are1488 you, Lord?2962 And he said2036 to me, I am1510 Jesus2424 of Nazareth,3478 whom3739 you persecute.1377

9 And they that were with me saw2300 indeed3303 the light,5457 and were afraid;1719 but they heard191 not the voice5456 of him that spoke2980 to me.

10 And I said,2036 What5101 shall I do,4160 LORD?2962 And the Lord2962 said2036 to me, Arise,450 and go4198 into1519 Damascus;1154 and there1563 it shall be told2980 you of all3956 things which3739 are appointed5021 for you to do.4160

11 And when5613 I could not see1689 for the glory1391 of that light,5457 being led5496 by the hand5496 of them that were with me, I came2064 into1519 Damascus.1154

12 And one5100 Ananias,367 a devout2152 man435 according2596 to the law,3551 having a good report3140 of all3956 the Jews2453 which dwelled2730 there,

13 Came2064 to me, and stood,2186 and said2036 to me, Brother80 Saul,4569 receive308 your sight.308 And the same846 hour5610 I looked308 up on him.

14 And he said,2036 The God2316 of our fathers3962 has chosen4400 you, that you should know1097 his will,2307 and see1492 that Just1342 One, and should hear191 the voice5456 of his mouth.4750

15 For you shall be his witness3144 to all3956 men444 of what3739 you have seen3708 and heard.191

16 And now3568 why5101 tarry3195 you? arise,450 and be baptized,907 and wash628 away628 your sins,266 calling1941 on1941 the name3686 of the Lord.2962

17 And it came1096 to pass, that, when I was come5290 again5290 to Jerusalem,2419 even while I prayed4336 in the temple,2411 I was in a trance;1611

18 And saw1492 him saying3004 to me, Make4692 haste,4692 and get1831 you quickly1722 5034 out of Jerusalem:2419 for they will not receive3858 your testimony3141 concerning4012 me.

19 And I said,2036 Lord,2962 they know1987 that I imprisoned5439 and beat1194 in every2596 synagogue4864 them that believed4100 on1909 you:

20 And when3753 the blood129 of your martyr3144 Stephen4736 was shed,1632 I also2532 was standing2186 by, and consenting4909 to his death,336 and kept5442 the raiment2440 of them that slew337 him.

21 And he said2036 to me, Depart:4198 for I will send1821 you far3112 hence1821 to the Gentiles.1484

22 And they gave him audience191 to this5127 word,3056 and then lifted1869 up their voices,5456 and said,3004 Away142 with such5108 a fellow from the earth:1093 for it is not fit2520 that he should live.2198

23 And as they cried2905 out, and cast4496 off4496 their clothes,2440 and threw906 dust2868 into1519 the air,109

24 The chief5506 captain5506 commanded2753 him to be brought71 into1519 the castle,3925 and bade2036 that he should be examined426 by scourging;3148 that he might know1921 why1223 3739 they cried2019 so3779 against2019 him.

25 And as they bound4385 him with thongs,2438 Paul3972 said2036 to the centurion1543 that stood2476 by, Is it lawful1832 for you to whip3147 a man444 that is a Roman,4514 and uncondemned?178

26 When the centurion1543 heard191 that, he went4334 and told518 the chief5506 captain,5506 saying,3004 Take heed3708 what5101 you do:4160 for this3778 man444 is a Roman.4514

27 Then1161 the chief5506 captain5506 came,4334 and said2036 to him, Tell3004 me, are1488 you a Roman?4514 He said,5346 Yes.3483

28 And the chief5506 captain5506 answered,611 With a great4183 sum2774 obtained2932 I this5026 freedom.4174 And Paul3972 said,5346 But I was free born.1080

29 Then3767 straightway2112 they departed868 from him which3588 should3195 have2192 examined426 him: and the chief5506 captain5506 also2532 was afraid,5399 after he knew1921 that he was a Roman,4514 and because3754 he had bound1210 him.

30 On the morrow,1887 because he would have2192 known1097 the certainty804 why5101 he was accused2723 of the Jews,2453 he loosed3089 him from his bands,1199 and commanded2753 the chief749 priests749 and all3650 their council4892 to appear,2064 and brought2609 Paul3972 down,2609 and set2476 him before1519 them.
