Chapter 5

1 BUT a certain man called An-a-ni'as, to gether with his wife named Shapphi'ra, sold his field.

2 And he took some of the price and hid it, and his wife also knew of it, and he brought some of the money and placed it at the disposal of the apostles.

3 And Simon Peter said to him, An-a-ni'as, why has Satan so filled your heart that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and hide part of the money of the price of the field?

4 Was it not your own before you sold it? And after it was sold, had you not the sole authority over its price? What made you think to do this thing? You have not only lied to men but to God.

5 And when An-a-ni'as heard these words, he fell down and died; and great fear came upon all of those who heard these things.

6 The younger men among them arose, and moved his body aside. Then they took him out and buried him.

7 Three hours later his wife also came in, not knowing what had happened.

8 Simon Peter said to her, Tell me if you sold the field for this price? She said, Yea, for this price.

9 Then Simon Peter said to her, Because you have been partners to tempt the Spirit of the LORD, behold the feet of the men who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out also.

10 And in that very hour she fell down at their feet and died, and the young men came in and found her dead, and they picked her up and carried her away and buried her by the side of her husband.

11 And great fear came upon all the congregation and upon all who heard what had happened.

12 Many miracles and signs were wrought among the people by the apostles, and they were all gathered together in the portico * of Solomon.

13 And of the unbelievers, no one dared to interfere with them, but the people held them in respect.

14 And the number of those who believed in the LORD was greatly increased by multitudes, both of men and women.

15 They even brought out the sick into the streets and laid them on bed quilts so that when Simon Peter should happen to pass by, his shadow might fall upon them.

16 Many came to them from other cities around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and mentally afflicted, and they were all healed.

17 Then the high priest was filled with jealousy and all of those who were with him, for they were adherents to the teachings of the Sad'du-cees,

18 So they laid hold on the apostles and arrested them and bound them in prison.

19 But during the night, the angel of the LORD opened the door of the prison and brought them forth and said to them,

20 Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all these words of life.

21 Accordingly they went out early in morning and entered into the temple and taught the people. But the high priest and those who were with him called their associates and the elders of Israel, and sent to the prison to bring the apostles.

22 And when those who were sent by them, went, and did not find them in the prison, they returned,

23 Saying, We found the prison carefully locked and also the guards standing at the doors; and we opened them but found no man there.

24 When the high priest and the leaders of the temple heard these words, they were astonished at them and they were reasoning how it could happen,

25 When a man came and en_lbp_informed them, Behold! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.

26 Then the leaders went with the soldiers to bring them, not by force, for they were afraid that the people might stone them.

27 And when they had brought them, they made them stand before the whole council, and the high priest proceeded,

28 Saying, Did we not strictly command you not to teach any man in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine; and intend to bring the blood of this man upon us.

29 Then Simon Peter with the rest of the apostles answered and said to them, We must obey God rather than men.

30 The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus whom you murdered when you crucified him on the cross.

31 This very one God has appointed a Prince and a Saviour, and has lifted him up by his right hand so that he may grant repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

32 And we are the witnesses of these words; so is also the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who believe in him.

33 When they heard these words, they were enraged and thought to murder the apostles.

34 Then one of the Phar'i-sees whose name was Ga-ma'li-el, a teacher of the law and honored by all the people, rose up and ordered them to take the apostles outside for a little while;

35 Then he said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves, and find out what is the best for you to do about these men.

36 For before these days, rose up Theu'das, boasting himself to be a great man; and about four hundred men followed him: he was slain; and those who followed him were scattered and nothing came of them.

37 After him rose up Judas, the Gal-i-le'an, in the days when people were registering for the head tax, and he misled many people into following him. He died; and all of those who followed him were dispersed.

38 So now I tell you, Keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this thought and this work is of men, it will fail and pass away.

39 But if it be of God, you cannot suppress it, lest perchance you find yourself standing in opposition to God.

40 And they listened to him, and they called the apostles, and scourged them, and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles went out from the presence of the council rejoicing that they had been worthy to suffer abuse for the sake of his name.

42 And they did not cease to teach daily in the temple and at home and to preach concerning our LORD Jesus Christ.

Chapter 5

1 But a certain5100 man435 named3686 Ananias,367 with Sapphira4551 his wife,1135 sold4453 a possession,2933

2 And kept3557 back3557 part of the price,5092 his wife1135 also2532 being privy4894 to it, and brought5342 a certain5100 part,3313 and laid5087 it at3844 the apostles'652 feet.4228

3 But Peter4074 said,2036 Ananias,367 why1302 has Satan4567 filled4137 your4675 heart2588 to lie5574 to the Holy40 Ghost,4151 and to keep3557 back3557 part of the price5092 of the land?5564

4 Whiles it remained,3306 was it not your4671 own? and after it was sold,4097 was it not in your3588 4674 own power?1849 why5101 have you conceived5087 this5124 thing4229 in your4675 heart?2588 you have not lied5574 to men,444 but to God.2316

5 And Ananias367 hearing191 these5128 words3056 fell4098 down, and gave up the ghost:1634 and great3173 fear5401 came1096 on1909 all3956 them that heard191 these5023 things.

6 And the young3501 men arose,450 wound4958 him up, and carried1627 him out, and buried2290 him.

7 And it was about5613 the space1292 of three5140 hours5610 after, when his wife,1135 not knowing1492 what3588 was done,1096 came1525 in.

8 And Peter4074 answered611 to her, Tell2036 me whether1487 you sold591 the land5564 for so5118 much?5118 And she said,2036 Yes,3483 for so5118 much.5118

9 Then1161 Peter4074 said2036 to her, How5101 is it that you have agreed4856 together4856 to tempt3985 the Spirit4151 of the Lord?2962 behold,2400 the feet4228 of them which have buried2290 your husband435 are at1909 the door,2374 and shall carry1627 you out.

10 Then1161 fell4098 she down straightway3916 at3844 his feet,4228 and yielded1634 up the ghost:1634 and the young3495 men3495 came1525 in, and found2147 her dead,3498 and, carrying1627 her forth,1627 buried2290 her by her husband.435

11 And great3173 fear5401 came1096 on all3650 the church,1577 and on as many as heard191 these5023 things.

12 And by the hands5495 of the apostles652 were many4183 signs4592 and wonders5059 worked1096 among1722 the people;2992 (and they were all537 with one3661 accord3661 in Solomon's4672 porch.4745

13 And of the rest3062 dared5111 no3762 man3762 join2853 himself to them: but the people2992 magnified3170 them.

14 And believers4100 were the more3123 added4369 to the Lord,2962 multitudes4128 both5037 of men435 and women.1135)

15 So5620 that they brought1627 forth1627 the sick772 into2596 the streets,4113 and laid5087 them on1909 beds2825 and couches,2895 that at2579 the least2579 the shadow4639 of Peter4074 passing2064 by might overshadow1982 some5100 of them.

16 There came4905 also2532 a multitude4128 out of the cities4172 round4038 about4038 to Jerusalem,2419 bringing5342 sick772 folks, and them which were vexed3791 with unclean169 spirits:4151 and they were healed2323 every537 one.

17 Then1161 the high749 priest749 rose450 up, and all3956 they that were with him, (which3588 is the sect139 of the Sadducees,4523) and were filled4137 with indignation,2205

18 And laid1911 their hands5495 on1909 the apostles,652 and put5087 them in the common1219 prison.5084

19 But the angel32 of the Lord2962 by night3571 opened455 the prison5438 doors,2374 and brought1806 them forth,1806 and said,2036

20 Go,4198 stand2476 and speak2980 in the temple2411 to the people2992 all3956 the words4487 of this5026 life.2222

21 And when they heard191 that, they entered1525 into1519 the temple2411 early3722 in the morning, and taught.1321 But the high749 priest749 came,3854 and they that were with him, and called4779 the council4892 together,4779 and all3956 the senate1087 of the children5207 of Israel,2474 and sent649 to the prison1201 to have them brought.71

22 But when the officers5257 came,3854 and found2147 them not in the prison,5438 they returned 390and told,518

23 Saying,3004 The prison1201 truly3303 found2147 we shut2808 with all3956 safety,803 and the keepers5441 standing2476 without1854 before4253 the doors:2374 but when we had opened,455 we found2147 no3762 man3762 within.2080

24 Now1161 when5613 the high2409 priest749 and the captain4755 of the temple2411 and the chief749 priests749 heard191 these5128 things,3056 they doubted1280 of them whereunto5101 this5124 would grow.1096

25 Then1161 came3854 one5100 and told518 them, saying,3004 Behold,2400 the men435 whom3739 you put5087 in prison5438 are standing2476 in the temple,2411 and teaching1321 the people.2992

26 Then5119 went565 the captain4755 with the officers,5257 and brought71 them without3756 3326 violence:970 for they feared5399 the people,2992 lest2443 3361 they should have been stoned.3034

27 And when they had brought71 them, they set2476 them before1722 the council:4892 and the high749 priest749 asked1905 them,

28 Saying,3004 Did not we straightly command3853 you that you should not teach1321 in this5129 name?3686 and, behold,2400 you have filled4137 Jerusalem2419 with your5216 doctrine,1322 and intend1014 to bring1863 this5127 man's444 blood129 on us.

29 Then1161 Peter4074 and the other apostles652 answered611 and said,2036 We ought1163 to obey3980 God2316 rather3123 than2228 men.444

30 The God2316 of our fathers3962 raised1453 up Jesus,2424 whom3739 you slew1315 and hanged2910 on1909 a tree.3586

31 Him has God2316 exalted5312 with his right1188 hand5495 to be a Prince747 and a Savior,4990 for to give1325 repentance3341 to Israel,2474 and forgiveness859 of sins.266

32 And we are his witnesses3144 of these5130 things;4487 and so is also2532 the Holy40 Ghost,4151 whom3739 God2316 has given1325 to them that obey3980 him.

33 When they heard191 that, they were cut1282 to the heart,2588 and took1011 counsel1011 to slay337 them.

34 Then1161 stood450 there up one5100 in the council,4892 a Pharisee,5330 named3686 Gamaliel,1059 a doctor3547 of the law,3547 had in reputation5093 among all3956 the people,2992 and commanded2753 to put4160 the apostles652 forth1854 a little1024 space;1024

35 And said2036 to them, You men435 of Israel,2475 take heed4337 to yourselves1438 what5101 you intend3195 to do4238 as touching1909 these5125 men.444

36 For before4253 these5130 days2250 rose450 up Theudas,2333 boasting3004 himself1438 to be somebody;5100 to whom3739 a number706 of men,435 about5616 four5071 hundred,5071 joined4347 themselves: who3739 was slain;337 and all,3956 as many3745 as obeyed3982 him, were scattered,1262 and brought1096 to nothing.3762

37 After3326 this5126 man rose450 up Judas2455 of Galilee1056 in the days2250 of the taxing,583 and drew868 away868 much2425 people2992 after3694 him: he also2548 perished;622 and all,3956 even as many3745 as obeyed3982 him, were dispersed.1287

38 And now3568 I say3004 to you, Refrain868 from these5130 men,444 and let1439 them alone:1439 for if1437 this5124 counsel1012 or2228 this5124 work2041 be of men,444 it will come2647 to nothing:2647

39 But if1487 it be of God,2316 you cannot3756 1410 overthrow2647 it; lest3379 haply3379 you be found2147 even2532 to fight2314 against God.2314

40 And to him they agreed:3982 and when they had called4341 the apostles,652 and beaten1194 them, they commanded3853 that they should not speak2980 in the name3686 of Jesus,2424 and let630 them go.630

41 And they departed4198 from the presence4383 of the council,4892 rejoicing5463 that they were counted2661 worthy2661 to suffer818 shame818 for his name.3686

42 And daily3956 2250 in the temple,2411 and in every2596 house,3624 they ceased3973 not to teach1321 and preach2097 Jesus2424 Christ.5547

15 They even brought out the sick into the streets and laid them on bed quilts so that when Simon Peter should happen to pass by, his shadow might fall upon them.

19 But during the night, the angel of the LORD opened the door of the prison and brought them forth and said to them,

19 But the angel32 of the Lord2962 by night3571 opened455 the prison5438 doors,2374 and brought1806 them forth,1806 and said,2036

24 When the high priest and the leaders of the temple heard these words, they were astonished at them and they were reasoning how it could happen,

25 When a man came and en_lbp_informed them, Behold! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.

29 Then Simon Peter with the rest of the apostles answered and said to them, We must obey God rather than men.

29 Then1161 Peter4074 and the other apostles652 answered611 and said,2036 We ought1163 to obey3980 God2316 rather3123 than2228 men.444

30 The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus whom you murdered when you crucified him on the cross.

30 The God2316 of our fathers3962 raised1453 up Jesus,2424 whom3739 you slew1315 and hanged2910 on1909 a tree.3586

31 This very one God has appointed a Prince and a Saviour, and has lifted him up by his right hand so that he may grant repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

31 Him has God2316 exalted5312 with his right1188 hand5495 to be a Prince747 and a Savior,4990 for to give1325 repentance3341 to Israel,2474 and forgiveness859 of sins.266

32 And we are the witnesses of these words; so is also the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who believe in him.

32 And we are his witnesses3144 of these5130 things;4487 and so is also2532 the Holy40 Ghost,4151 whom3739 God2316 has given1325 to them that obey3980 him.

33 When they heard these words, they were enraged and thought to murder the apostles.

33 When they heard191 that, they were cut1282 to the heart,2588 and took1011 counsel1011 to slay337 them.

34 Then one of the Phar'i-sees whose name was Ga-ma'li-el, a teacher of the law and honored by all the people, rose up and ordered them to take the apostles outside for a little while;

35 Then he said to them, Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves, and find out what is the best for you to do about these men.

35 And said2036 to them, You men435 of Israel,2475 take heed4337 to yourselves1438 what5101 you intend3195 to do4238 as touching1909 these5125 men.444

36 For before these days, rose up Theu'das, boasting himself to be a great man; and about four hundred men followed him: he was slain; and those who followed him were scattered and nothing came of them.

37 After him rose up Judas, the Gal-i-le'an, in the days when people were registering for the head tax, and he misled many people into following him. He died; and all of those who followed him were dispersed.

38 So now I tell you, Keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this thought and this work is of men, it will fail and pass away.

38 And now3568 I say3004 to you, Refrain868 from these5130 men,444 and let1439 them alone:1439 for if1437 this5124 counsel1012 or2228 this5124 work2041 be of men,444 it will come2647 to nothing:2647

39 But if it be of God, you cannot suppress it, lest perchance you find yourself standing in opposition to God.

39 But if1487 it be of God,2316 you cannot3756 1410 overthrow2647 it; lest3379 haply3379 you be found2147 even2532 to fight2314 against God.2314

40 And they listened to him, and they called the apostles, and scourged them, and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

40 And to him they agreed:3982 and when they had called4341 the apostles,652 and beaten1194 them, they commanded3853 that they should not speak2980 in the name3686 of Jesus,2424 and let630 them go.630

41 The apostles went out from the presence of the council rejoicing that they had been worthy to suffer abuse for the sake of his name.

41 And they departed4198 from the presence4383 of the council,4892 rejoicing5463 that they were counted2661 worthy2661 to suffer818 shame818 for his name.3686

42 And they did not cease to teach daily in the temple and at home and to preach concerning our LORD Jesus Christ.

42 And daily3956 2250 in the temple,2411 and in every2596 house,3624 they ceased3973 not to teach1321 and preach2097 Jesus2424 Christ.5547
