2 Hear8085 this,2063 you old2205 men, and give ear,238 all3605 you inhabitants3427 of the land.776 Has this2063 been1961 in your days,3117 or even518 in the days3117 of your fathers?1

3 Tell5608 you your children1121 of it, and let your children1121 tell their children,1121 and their children1121 another312 generation.1755

4 That which the palmerworm1501 has left3499 has the locust697 eaten;398 and that which the locust697 has left3499 has the cankerworm3218 eaten;398 and that which the cankerworm3218 has left3499 has the caterpillar2625 eaten.398

5 Awake,6974 you drunkards,7910 and weep;1058 and howl,3213 all3605 you drinkers8354 of wine,3196 because5921 of the new wine;6071 for it is cut3772 off from your mouth.6310

6 For a nation1471 is come5927 up on my land,776 strong,6099 and without369 number,4557 whose teeth8127 are the teeth8127 of a lion,738 and he has the cheek4973 teeth4973 of a great3833 lion.3833

7 He has laid7760 my vine1612 waste,8047 and barked7111 my fig8384 tree: he has made it clean bore,2834 and cast7993 it away; the branches8299 thereof are made white.3835

8 Lament421 like a virgin1330 girded2296 with sackcloth8242 for the husband1167 of her youth.5271

9 The meat offering4503 and the drink5262 offering is cut3772 off from the house1004 of the LORD;3068 the priests,3548 the LORD's3068 ministers,8334 mourn.56

10 The field7704 is wasted,7703 the land127 mourns;56 for the corn1715 is wasted:7703 the new8492 wine8492 is dried3001 up, the oil3323 languishes.535

11 Be you ashamed,954 O you farmers;406 howl,3213 O you vinedressers,3755 for the wheat2406 and for the barley;8184 because3588 the harvest7105 of the field7704 is perished.6

12 The vine1612 is dried3001 up, and the fig8384 tree languishes;535 the pomegranate7416 tree, the palm8558 tree also,1571 and the apple8598 tree, even all3605 the trees6086 of the field,7704 are withered:3001 because3588 joy8342 is withered3001 away from the sons1121 of men.120

13 Gird2296 yourselves, and lament,5594 you priests:3548 howl,3213 you ministers8334 of the altar:4196 come,935 lie3885 all3885 night in sackcloth,8242 you ministers8334 of my God:430 for the meat offering4503 and the drink5262 offering is withheld4513 from the house1004 of your God.430

14 Sanctify6942 you a fast,6685 call7121 a solemn6116 assembly,6116 gather622 the elders2205 and all3605 the inhabitants3427 of the land776 into the house1004 of the LORD3068 your God,430 and cry2199 to the LORD,3068

15 Alas162 for the day!3117 for the day3117 of the LORD3068 is at7138 hand,7138 and as a destruction7701 from the Almighty7706 shall it come.935

16 Is not the meat400 cut3772 off before5048 our eyes,5869 yes, joy8057 and gladness1524 from the house1004 of our God?430

17 The seed6507 is rotten5685 under8478 their clods,4053 the garners214 are laid desolate,8074 the barns4460 are broken2040 down;2040 for the corn1715 is withered.3001

18 How4100 do the beasts929 groan!584 the herds5739 of cattle1241 are perplexed,943 because3588 they have no369 pasture;4829 yes,1571 the flocks5739 of sheep6629 are made desolate.816

19 O LORD,3068 to you will I cry:7121 for the fire784 has devoured398 the pastures4999 of the wilderness,4057 and the flame3852 has burned3857 all3605 the trees6086 of the field.7704

20 The beasts929 of the field7704 cry6165 also1571 to you: for the rivers650 of waters4325 are dried3001 up, and the fire784 has devoured398 the pastures4999 of the wilderness.4057

Chapter 1

1 THE word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Bethuel:

2 Hear this, O you elders, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land! Has such a calamity ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?

3 Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.

4 What the palmerworm has left, the locust has eaten; and what the swarming locust has left, the crawling locust has eaten; and what the crawling locust has left, the cankerworm has eaten.

5 Awake, O you drunkards, and weep; and howl, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

6 A nation has come up against my land, strong, and without number; whose teeth are like the teeth of a lion, and his fangs as the fangs of a lion's whelp.

7 He has laid my vine waste, and has cut off my fig tree and thrown it away; the branches thereof are made white.

8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9 The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from the house of the LORD; the kings mourn, and the priests who minister to the LORD mourn.

10 The field is plundered, the land mourns; for the wheat is plundered, the new wine is dried up, the olive orchards are destroyed.

11 Be ashamed, O you husbandmen; howl, O you vinedressers, howl for the wheat and for the barley because the harvest of the fields is perished.

12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languishes; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree, and the apple tree, all the trees of the field are withered; joy is fled from the sons of men.

13 Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament, O you priests; howl, O you ministers of the altar; go in, spend the night in sackcloth, O you ministers of my God, because the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.

14 Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry to the LORD your God, and say,

15 Alas, alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as plunder from God shall it come.

16 And, behold, before our eyes the food is cut off from the house of our God, and gladness and joy have ceased.

17 The cows languish at their mangers, the granaries are laid waste, the winepresses are thrown down, and the grain is dried up.

18 How the beasts groan! the herds of cattle cry because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep also are perished.

19 O LORD, to thee will I cry; for the fire has devoured the camps of shepherds in the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field.

20 Also the beasts of the field cry out to thee because the ponds of water are dried up, and the fire has devoured the camps of shepherds in the wilderness.
