Chapter 19

1 AND it came to pass, that while Apol'los was at Cor'inth, Paul traveled through the northern countries and came to Eph'e-sus, and inquired of the disciples whom he found there,

2 Have you received the Holy Spirit since you were converted? They answered and said to him, We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

3 Then he said to them, By what baptism then were you baptized? They said, By the baptism of John.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized the people with the baptism of repentance, saying unto them that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, Jesus Christ.

5 When they heard these things, they were baptized in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ.

6 And when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke in divers tongues, and prophesied.

7 And there were in all twelve persons.

8 Then Paul entered into the synagogue, and spoke openly for a period of three months, persuading the people concerning the kingdom of God.

9 But some of them were stubborn, and they disputed and cursed the way of God in the presence of the assembly. Then Paul withdrew, and separated the disciples from them, and he spoke to them daily in the school of a man named Ty-ran'us.

10 And this continued for two years until all who dwelt in Asia Minor, both Jews and Arameans (Syrians), heard the word of God.

11 And God wrought great miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 So that even when, of the clothes on his body, pieces of garments were brought and laid upon the sick, diseases were cured, and even the insane were restored.

13 Now certain Jews, who went about exorcising evil spirits, invoked the name of our LORD Jesus over those who were possessed, saying, We adjure you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches.

14 And there were seven sons of one Sce'va, a Jew, and chief of the priests, who did this.

15 And the insane man answered and said to them, Jesus I recognize and Paul I know; but who are you?

16 Then the insane man leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17 And this became known to all the Jews and Arameans (Syrians) who dwelt at Eph'esus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of our LORD Jesus Christ was magnified.

18 And many of them that believed came, and told their faults, and confessed what they had done.

19 Many magicians also gathered together their en_lbp_books and brought them and burned them before the presence of the people; and they counted the price of them, and it amounted to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20 So mightily grew the faith of God and greatly increased in numbers.

21 When these things had been accomplished, Paul made up his mind to travel through all of Mac-e-do'ni-a and A-cha'ia, and then to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

22 So he sent to Mac-e-do'ni-a two men of those who had ministered to him, Ti-mo'theus and E-ras'tus; but he himself stayed in Asia Minor for some time.

23 And at that time there was a great uprising against those who followed in the way of God.

24 There was here a silversmith named Deme'tri- us, who made silver shrines for Ar'temis, thus greatly enriching the craftsmen of his trade.

25 He called together all the craftsmen of his trade, with the workmen of like occupation, and said to them: Men, you know that all of our earnings are derived from this craft.

26 You also hear and see that not only the Ephe'si- ans, but almost throughout all Asia Minor, this Paul has persuaded, and turned away many people simply by saying that gods made by the hands of men are not gods,

27 So that not only is this craft doomed, but also the temple of the great goddess Ar'temis will be disregarded, and the goddess of all Asia Minor, even she whom all peoples worship, will be despised.

28 And when they heard these things they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Ar'te-mis of the E-phe'si-ans.

29 And the whole city was in tumult: and they rushed together to the theatre, and there seized and carried along with them Ga'ius and Ar-is-tar'chus, Mac-e-do'ni-ans, members of Paul's escort.

30 And Paul wanted to go into the theatre, but the disciples stopped him.

31 And likewise some of the chiefs of Asia Minor, because they were his friends, sent to him, begging him not to risk his life by entering the theatre.

32 Now the multitude in the theatre was greatly confused; some cried one thing, and some another; and many of them did not know why they had assembled together.

33 And the Jews who were there appointed a Jew named Al-ex-an'der. And when he rose up, he gestured with his hand and would have addressed the people.

34 But when they knew he was a Jew, all of them cried out with one voice for about two hours, Great is Ar'te-mis of the E-phe'si-ans.

35 The mayor of the city finally quieted them, saying, Men of Eph'e-sus, who among men does not know that the city of the Ephe'si- ans is the seat of great Ar'te-mis and her image that fell from heaven.

36 Since, therefore, no man can contradict this, you should keep quiet, and do nothing hastily.

37 For you have brought these men here who have neither robbed temples nor have they reviled our goddess.

38 But if De-me'tri-us and the men of his trade have a case against any man, behold there is a proconsul in the city; let the craftsmen come forward and settle with one another in the court.

39 But if you want something else, it must be determined in a lawful assembly.

40 For even now we are in danger of being charged with sedition, for we cannot give an answer concerning this day's meeting, because we have assembled for no reason, and have been tumultuous without a cause.

41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

Chapter 19

1 And it came1096 to pass, that, while1722 3588 Apollos625 was at1722 Corinth,2882 Paul3972 having passed1330 through1330 the upper510 coasts3313 came2064 to Ephesus:2181 and finding2147 certain5100 disciples,3101

2 He said2036 to them, Have2076 you received2983 the Holy40 Ghost4151 since you believed?4100 And they said2036 to him, We have2076 not so3761 much3761 as heard191 whether1487 there be any Holy40 Ghost.4151

3 And he said2036 to them, To what5101 then3767 were you baptized?907 And they said,2036 To John's2491 baptism.908

4 Then1161 said2036 Paul,3972 John2491 truly3303 baptized907 with the baptism908 of repentance,3341 saying3004 to the people,2992 that they should believe4100 on1519 him which should come2064 after3326 him, that is, on1519 Christ5547 Jesus.2424

5 When they heard191 this, they were baptized907 in the name3686 of the Lord2962 Jesus.2424

6 And when Paul3972 had laid2007 his hands5495 on them, the Holy40 Ghost4151 came2064 on1909 them; and they spoke2980 with tongues,1100 and prophesied.4395

7 And all3956 the men435 were about5616 twelve.1177

8 And he went1525 into1519 the synagogue,4864 and spoke2980 boldly3955 for the space1909 of three5140 months,3376 disputing1256 and persuading3982 the things concerning4012 the kingdom932 of God.2316

9 But when5613 divers5100 were hardened,4645 and believed544 not, but spoke2551 evil of that way3598 before1799 the multitude,4128 he departed868 from them, and separated873 the disciples,3101 disputing1256 daily2596 2250 in the school4981 of one5100 Tyrannus.5181

10 And this5124 continued1096 by the space1909 of two1417 years;2094 so5620 that all3956 they which dwelled2730 in Asia773 heard191 the word3056 of the Lord2962 Jesus,2424 both5037 Jews2453 and Greeks.1672

11 And God2316 worked4160 special3756 miracles1411 by the hands5495 of Paul:3972

12 So5620 that from his body5559 were brought2018 to the sick770 handkerchiefs4676 or2228 aprons,4612 and the diseases3554 departed525 from them, and the evil4190 spirits4151 went1831 out of them.

13 Then1161 certain5100 of the vagabond4022 Jews,2453 exorcists,1845 took2021 on them to call3687 over1909 them which had2192 evil4190 spirits4151 the name3686 of the LORD2962 Jesus,2424 saying,3004 We adjure3726 you by Jesus2424 whom3739 Paul3972 preaches.2784

14 And there were seven2033 sons5207 of one Sceva,4630 a Jew,2453 and chief749 of the priests,749 which did4160 so.5124

15 And the evil4190 spirit4151 answered611 and said,2036 Jesus2424 I know,1097 and Paul3972 I know;1987 but who5101 are you?

16 And the man444 in whom3739 the evil4190 spirit4151 was leaped2177 on1909 them, and overcame2634 them, and prevailed2480 against2596 them, so5620 that they fled1628 out of that house3624 naked1131 and wounded.5135

17 And this5124 was known1110 to all3956 the Jews2453 and Greeks1672 also2532 dwelling2730 at Ephesus;2181 and fear5401 fell1968 on1909 them all,3956 and the name3686 of the Lord2962 Jesus2424 was magnified.3170

18 And many4183 that believed4100 came,2064 and confessed,1843 and showed312 their deeds.4234

19 Many2425 of them also1161 which used4238 curious4021 arts4021 brought4851 their books976 together,4851 and burned2618 them before1799 all3956 men: and they counted4860 the price5092 of them, and found2147 it fifty4002 3461 thousand3461 pieces of silver.694

20 So3779 mightily2596 2904 grew837 the word3056 of God2962 and prevailed.2480

21 After5613 these5023 things were ended,4137 Paul3972 purposed5087 in the spirit,4151 when he had passed1330 through1330 Macedonia3109 and Achaia,882 to go4198 to Jerusalem,2419 saying,2036 After3326 I have been1096 there,1563 I must1163 also2532 see1492 Rome.4516

22 So he sent649 into1519 Macedonia3109 two1417 of them that ministered1247 to him, Timotheus5095 and Erastus;2037 but he himself846 stayed1907 in Asia773 for a season.5550

23 And the same1565 time2540 there arose1096 no3756 small3641 stir5017 about4012 that way.3598

24 For a certain5100 man named3686 Demetrius,1216 a silversmith,695 which made4160 silver693 shrines3485 for Diana,735 brought3930 no3756 small3641 gain2039 to the craftsmen;5079

25 Whom3739 he called4867 together4867 with the workmen2040 of like5108 occupation,5078 and said,2036 Sirs,435 you know1987 that by this5026 craft2039 we have2076 our wealth.2142

26 Moreover2532 you see2334 and hear,191 that not alone3440 at Ephesus,2181 but almost4975 throughout all3956 Asia,773 this3778 Paul3972 has persuaded3982 and turned3179 away3179 much2425 people,3793 saying3004 that they be no3756 gods,2316 which3588 are made1096 with hands:5495

27 So that not only3440 this5124 our craft3313 is in danger2793 to be set2064 at1519 nothing;557 but also2532 that the temple2411 of the great3173 goddess2299 Diana735 should be despised,1519 3762 3049 and her magnificence3168 should3195 be destroyed,2507 whom3739 all3650 Asia773 and the world3625 worships.4576

28 And when they heard191 these sayings, they were full4134 of wrath,2372 and cried2896 out, saying,3004 Great3173 is Diana735 of the Ephesians.2180

29 And the whole3650 city4172 was filled4130 with confusion:4799 and having caught4884 Gaius1050 and Aristarchus,708 men of Macedonia,3110 Paul's3972 companions4898 in travel,4898 they rushed3729 with one3661 accord3661 into1519 the theatre.2302

30 And when Paul3972 would have1014 entered1525 in to the people,1218 the disciples3101 suffered1439 him not.

31 And certain5100 of the chief775 of Asia,775 which were his friends,5384 sent3992 to him, desiring3870 him that he would not adventure1325 himself1438 into1519 the theatre.2302

32 Some243 therefore3767 cried2896 one3303 thing, and some243 another:243 for the assembly1577 was confused:4797 and the more4119 part knew1492 not why5101 1752 they were come4905 together.4897

33 And they drew4264 Alexander223 out of the multitude,3793 the Jews2453 putting4261 him forward.4261 And Alexander223 beckoned2678 with the hand,5495 and would2309 have made626 his defense626 to the people.1218

34 But when they knew1921 that he was a Jew,2453 all3956 with one3391 voice5456 about5613 the space1909 of two1417 hours5610 cried2896 out, Great3173 is Diana735 of the Ephesians.2180

35 And when the town clerk1122 had appeased2687 the people,3793 he said,5346 You men435 of Ephesus,2181 what5101 man444 is there that knows1097 not how that the city4172 of the Ephesians2180 is a worshipper3511 of the great3173 goddess2299 Diana,735 and of the image which fell1356 down from Jupiter?1356

36 Seeing then3767 that these5130 things cannot368 be spoken369 against,368 you ought1163 to be quiet,2687 and to do4160 nothing3367 rashly.4312

37 For you have brought71 here these5128 men,435 which are neither3777 robbers2417 of churches,2417 nor3777 yet blasphemers987 of your5216 goddess.2299

38 Why3303 3767 if1487 Demetrius,1216 and the craftsmen5079 which are with him, have2192 a matter3056 against4314 any5100 man, the law60 is open,71 and there are deputies:446 let them accuse1458 one240 another.240

39 But if1487 you inquire1934 any5100 thing concerning4012 other2087 matters, it shall be determined1956 in a lawful1772 assembly.1577

40 For we are in danger2793 to be called1458 in question1458 for this4594 day's4594 uproar,4714 there being5225 no3367 cause158 whereby4012 3757 we may1410 give591 an account3056 of this5026 concourse.4963

41 And when he had thus5023 spoken,2036 he dismissed630 the assembly.1577

22 So he sent to Mac-e-do'ni-a two men of those who had ministered to him, Ti-mo'theus and E-ras'tus; but he himself stayed in Asia Minor for some time.

23 And at that time there was a great uprising against those who followed in the way of God.

23 And the same1565 time2540 there arose1096 no3756 small3641 stir5017 about4012 that way.3598

25 Whom3739 he called4867 together4867 with the workmen2040 of like5108 occupation,5078 and said,2036 Sirs,435 you know1987 that by this5026 craft2039 we have2076 our wealth.2142

26 You also hear and see that not only the Ephe'si- ans, but almost throughout all Asia Minor, this Paul has persuaded, and turned away many people simply by saying that gods made by the hands of men are not gods,

27 So that not only is this craft doomed, but also the temple of the great goddess Ar'temis will be disregarded, and the goddess of all Asia Minor, even she whom all peoples worship, will be despised.

28 And when they heard these things they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Ar'te-mis of the E-phe'si-ans.

28 And when they heard191 these sayings, they were full4134 of wrath,2372 and cried2896 out, saying,3004 Great3173 is Diana735 of the Ephesians.2180

29 And the whole city was in tumult: and they rushed together to the theatre, and there seized and carried along with them Ga'ius and Ar-is-tar'chus, Mac-e-do'ni-ans, members of Paul's escort.

30 And Paul wanted to go into the theatre, but the disciples stopped him.

30 And when Paul3972 would have1014 entered1525 in to the people,1218 the disciples3101 suffered1439 him not.

31 And likewise some of the chiefs of Asia Minor, because they were his friends, sent to him, begging him not to risk his life by entering the theatre.

31 And certain5100 of the chief775 of Asia,775 which were his friends,5384 sent3992 to him, desiring3870 him that he would not adventure1325 himself1438 into1519 the theatre.2302

32 Now the multitude in the theatre was greatly confused; some cried one thing, and some another; and many of them did not know why they had assembled together.

32 Some243 therefore3767 cried2896 one3303 thing, and some243 another:243 for the assembly1577 was confused:4797 and the more4119 part knew1492 not why5101 1752 they were come4905 together.4897

33 And the Jews who were there appointed a Jew named Al-ex-an'der. And when he rose up, he gestured with his hand and would have addressed the people.

33 And they drew4264 Alexander223 out of the multitude,3793 the Jews2453 putting4261 him forward.4261 And Alexander223 beckoned2678 with the hand,5495 and would2309 have made626 his defense626 to the people.1218

34 But when they knew he was a Jew, all of them cried out with one voice for about two hours, Great is Ar'te-mis of the E-phe'si-ans.

34 But when they knew1921 that he was a Jew,2453 all3956 with one3391 voice5456 about5613 the space1909 of two1417 hours5610 cried2896 out, Great3173 is Diana735 of the Ephesians.2180

35 The mayor of the city finally quieted them, saying, Men of Eph'e-sus, who among men does not know that the city of the Ephe'si- ans is the seat of great Ar'te-mis and her image that fell from heaven.

36 Since, therefore, no man can contradict this, you should keep quiet, and do nothing hastily.

36 Seeing then3767 that these5130 things cannot368 be spoken369 against,368 you ought1163 to be quiet,2687 and to do4160 nothing3367 rashly.4312

37 For you have brought these men here who have neither robbed temples nor have they reviled our goddess.

37 For you have brought71 here these5128 men,435 which are neither3777 robbers2417 of churches,2417 nor3777 yet blasphemers987 of your5216 goddess.2299

38 But if De-me'tri-us and the men of his trade have a case against any man, behold there is a proconsul in the city; let the craftsmen come forward and settle with one another in the court.

38 Why3303 3767 if1487 Demetrius,1216 and the craftsmen5079 which are with him, have2192 a matter3056 against4314 any5100 man, the law60 is open,71 and there are deputies:446 let them accuse1458 one240 another.240

39 But if you want something else, it must be determined in a lawful assembly.

39 But if1487 you inquire1934 any5100 thing concerning4012 other2087 matters, it shall be determined1956 in a lawful1772 assembly.1577

40 For even now we are in danger of being charged with sedition, for we cannot give an answer concerning this day's meeting, because we have assembled for no reason, and have been tumultuous without a cause.

40 For we are in danger2793 to be called1458 in question1458 for this4594 day's4594 uproar,4714 there being5225 no3367 cause158 whereby4012 3757 we may1410 give591 an account3056 of this5026 concourse.4963

41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.

41 And when he had thus5023 spoken,2036 he dismissed630 the assembly.1577
