Chapter 38

1 THEN the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 Who is this that gives counsel by words without knowledge?

3 Gird up your loins now, like a valiant man; for I will question you, and you shall answer me.

4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.

5 Who has laid its measures, if you know? Or who has stretched the line upon it?

6 Upon what are its limits resting? Or who laid the cornerstone thereof?

7 When did I create the morning stars, and all the angels shouted for joy?

8 Or who shut up the sea with gates, when it broke forth as if it had issued out of the womb?

9 When I made the cloud the garment of the earth, and thick darkness a swaddling hand for it,

10 And prescribed limits for it, and set bars and doors,

11 And said, Thus far shall you come, but no farther; and here shall your proud waves be stayed?

12 Have you commanded the dawn since your days began; or do you know the place of the morning;

13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be thrown out of it?

14 So that their bodies shall be turned into clay, and be thrown into a heap.

15 The light of sinners shall be withheld, and the arm of the arrogant shall be broken.

16 Have you entered into the depths of the sea? Or have you walked in the foundations of the deep?

17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

18 Have you seen the whole breadth of the earth? Declare to me if you know it all.

19 Where is the dwelling place of light, and where is the place of darkness?

20 Do you know its borders and the path to its house?

21 Do you remember when you were born, and do you know if you will live many days?

22 Have you entered into the chambers of the snow? Or have you seen the storehouses of hail,

23 Which are reserved against the time of distress, against the day of battle and war?

24 Or in what manner is light distributed, and whence the wind comes forth upon the earth?

25 Who causes a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder?

26 Who causes it to rain on a land where no man is, in the wilderness where there is no inhabitant,

27 To saturate every thicket, and cause the tender grass to spring up?

28 Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?

29 Out of whose womb did the dew and ice come forth? And who begot the hoary frost of heaven?

30 The waters are hardened like a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

31 Can you stop the movement of the Pleiades, or have you seen the path of Orion?

32 Can you bring forth Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you stand in the paths of Aldebaran?

33 Do you know the laws of the heavens? Or do you make ordinances for the earth?

34 Can you lift up your voice to the clouds? Or can you cover them with abundance of waters?

35 Can you send forth the lightnings, that they may go, and say to you. Here we are?

36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given vision to understanding?

37 Who has numbered the clouds by his wisdom? And who has raised the pillars of heaven?

38 Who has poured out soil upon the earth, and who has made the steep rocks?

39 Who has given prey for the lion? Or filled the appetite of the young lions?

40 Who has multiplied the beasts in the field? Or who has provided food for the raven?

41 For its young ones cry to God, and faint for lack of food.

1 Тогда Господь ответил Иову из бури. Он сказал:

2 — Кто ты, что Мой замысел омрачаешь словами, в которых нет знания?

3 Препояшь себя, как мужчина; Я буду спрашивать, а ты отвечай.

4 Где ты был, когда Я землю утверждал? Если ты знаешь, то отвечай Мне.

5 Кто определил ей предел? Конечно, ты знаешь! Кто протянул над ней мерную нить?

6 На чем покоится земное основание, и кто заложил ее краеугольный камень,

7 когда вместе пели все звезды утра, и сыны Божьи ликовали от радости?

8 Кто запер воротами море, когда оно исторглось, как бы из чрева,

9 когда сделал Я тучи его одеждой и обвил его пеленами мглы,

10 когда Я назначил ему рубежи и поставил ему ворота с запорами,

11 когда Я сказал: «До этого места дойдешь, но не дальше, здесь предел для гордых твоих валов?»

12 Случалось ли тебе приказывать утру и указывать место заре,

13 чтобы она охватила края земли и стряхнула с нее злодеев?

14 И земля обретает свое лицо, как глина под тяжестью печати, и расцвечивается, как риза.

15 Но у злодеев отнят их свет, и поднятая рука их сломана.

16 Доходил ли ты до истоков моря и ступал ли по дну пучины?

17 Открывались ли тебе двери смерти? Видел ли ты врата смертной мглы?

18 Обозрел ли ты широту земли? Скажи Мне, если все это знаешь.

19 Где путь к обители света? Где пребывает тьма?

20 Ты, верно, в пределы ее входил и знаешь путь к ее дому?

21 Конечно же знаешь, ведь ты тогда уже родился и прожил так много лет!

22 Входил ли ты в кладовые снега и видел ли хранилища града?

23 На смутное время Я их берегу, на дни войны и битвы.

24 По какому пути разливается свет, и мчится на землю восточный ветер?

25 Кто устроил проток для ливня и путь проложил грозе,

26 чтобы землю безлюдную оросить, пустыню, где нет людей,

27 дикую степь напитать водой, и взрастить из земли траву?

28 Есть ли отец у дождя? Кто капли росы рождает?

29 Из чьей утробы выходит лед? Кто на свет производит небесный иней,

30 когда воды, как камень, крепнут, и твердеет лицо морей?

31 Властен ли ты затянуть узел Плеяд и развязать пояс Ориона?

32 Можешь ли ты созвездия вывести в срок и вести Большую Медведицу с ее детенышами?

33 Известны ли тебе уставы небес? Можешь ли ты их власть утвердить на земле?

34 Можешь ли ты возвысить свой голос к тучам, чтобы вода в обилии покрыла тебя?

35 Велишь ли ты молниям в путь пойти, скажут ли они тебе: «Вот мы»?

36 Кто ибиса мудростью наделил? Кто дал разумение петуху?

37 Кто настолько мудр, чтобы сосчитать облака? Кто может сосуды небес опрокинуть,

38 чтобы пыль превратилась в топь, и комья земли слиплись?

39 Ты ли ловишь добычу львице и насыщаешь молодых львов,

40 когда они прячутся в своих логовах или лежат под кустом в засаде?

41 Кто посылает ворону корм, когда птенцы его взывают к Богу, бродя без пищи?

4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.	4 Где ты был, когда Я землю утверждал? Если ты знаешь, то отвечай Мне.
5 Who has laid its measures, if you know? Or who has stretched the line upon it?	5 Кто определил ей предел? Конечно, ты знаешь! Кто протянул над ней мерную нить?
6 Upon what are its limits resting? Or who laid the cornerstone thereof?	6 На чем покоится земное основание, и кто заложил ее краеугольный камень,

9 When I made the cloud the garment of the earth, and thick darkness a swaddling hand for it,	9 когда сделал Я тучи его одеждой и обвил его пеленами мглы,
10 And prescribed limits for it, and set bars and doors,	10 когда Я назначил ему рубежи и поставил ему ворота с запорами,
11 And said, Thus far shall you come, but no farther; and here shall your proud waves be stayed?	11 когда Я сказал: «До этого места дойдешь, но не дальше, здесь предел для гордых твоих валов?»
12 Have you commanded the dawn since your days began; or do you know the place of the morning;	12 Случалось ли тебе приказывать утру и указывать место заре,
13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be thrown out of it?	13 чтобы она охватила края земли и стряхнула с нее злодеев?
14 So that their bodies shall be turned into clay, and be thrown into a heap.	14 И земля обретает свое лицо, как глина под тяжестью печати, и расцвечивается, как риза.

19 Where is the dwelling place of light, and where is the place of darkness?	19 Где путь к обители света? Где пребывает тьма?
20 Do you know its borders and the path to its house?	20 Ты, верно, в пределы ее входил и знаешь путь к ее дому?
