1 Men,435 brethren,80 and2532 fathers,3962 hear191 ye my3450 defense627 which I make now3568 unto4314 you.5209

2 (And1161 when they heard191 that3754 he spake4377 in the3588 Hebrew1446 tongue1258 to them,846 they kept3930 the more3123 silence:2271 and2532 he saith,)5346

3 I1473 am1510 verily3303 a man435 which am a Jew,2453 born1080 in1722 Tarsus,5019 a city in Cilicia,2791 yet1161 brought up397 in1722 this5026 city4172 at3844 the3588 feet4228 of Gamaliel,1059 and taught3811 according2596 to the perfect manner195 of the law3551 of the3588 fathers,3971 and was5225 zealous2207 toward God,2316 as2531 ye5210 all3956 are2075 this day.4594

4 And I3739 persecuted1377 this5026 way3598 unto891 the death,2288 binding1195 and2532 delivering3860 into1519 prisons5438 both5037 men435 and2532 women.1135

5 As5613 also2532 the3588 high priest749 doth bear me witness,3140 3427 and2532 all3956 the3588 estate of the elders:4244 from3844 whom3739 also2532 I received1209 letters1992 unto4314 the3588 brethren,80 and went4198 to1519 Damascus,1154 to bring71 2532 them which were5607 there1566 bound1210 unto1519 Jerusalem,2419 for to2443 be punished.5097

6 And1161 it came to pass,1096 that, as I3427 made my journey,4198 and2532 was come nigh1448 unto Damascus1154 about4012 noon,3314 suddenly1810 there shone4015 from1537 heaven3772 a great2425 light5457 round about4012 me.1691

7 And5037 I fell4098 unto1519 the3588 ground,1475 and2532 heard191 a voice5456 saying3004 unto me,3427 Saul,4549 Saul,4549 why5101 persecutest1377 thou me?3165

8 And1161 I1473 answered,611 Who5101 art1488 thou, Lord?2962 And5037 he said2036 unto4314 me,3165 I1473 am1510 Jesus2424 of Nazareth,3480 whom3739 thou4771 persecutest.1377

9 And1161 they that were5607 with4862 me1698 saw2300 indeed3303 the3588 light,5457 and2532 were1096 afraid;1719 but1161 they heard191 not3756 the3588 voice5456 of him that spake2980 to me.3427

10 And1161 I said,2036 What5101 shall I do,4160 Lord?2962 And1161 the3588 Lord2962 said2036 unto4314 me,3165 Arise,450 and go4198 into1519 Damascus;1154 and there2546 it shall be told2980 thee4671 of4012 all things3956 which3739 are appointed5021 for thee4671 to do.4160

11 And1161 when5613 I could not3756 see1689 for575 the3588 glory1391 of that1565 light,5457 being led by the hand5496 of5259 them that were with4895 me,3427 I came2064 into1519 Damascus.1154

12 And1161 one5100 Ananias,367 a devout2152 man435 according2596 to the3588 law,3551 having a good report3140 of5259 all3956 the3588 Jews2453 which dwelt2730 there,

13 Came2064 unto4314 me,3165 and2532 stood,2186 and said2036 unto me,3427 Brother80 Saul,4549 receive thy sight.308 And the3588 same846 hour5610 I2504 looked up308 upon1519 him.846

14 And1161 he3588 said,2036 The3588 God2316 of our2257 fathers3962 hath chosen4400 thee,4571 that thou shouldest know1097 his848 will,2307 and2532 see1492 that Just One,1342 and2532 shouldest hear191 the voice5456 of1537 his848 mouth.4750

15 For3754 thou shalt be2071 his846 witness3144 unto4314 all3956 men444 of what3739 thou hast seen3708 and2532 heard.191

16 And2532 now3568 why5101 tarriest3195 thou? arise,450 and be baptized,907 and2532 wash away628 thy4675 sins,266 calling on1941 the3588 name3686 of the3588 Lord.2962

17 And1161 it came to pass,1096 that, when I3427 was come again5290 to1519 Jerusalem,2419 even2532 while I3450 prayed4336 in1722 the3588 temple,2411 I3165 was1096 in1722 a trance;1611

18 And2532 saw1492 him846 saying3004 unto me,3427 Make haste,4692 and2532 get1831 thee quickly1722 5034 out of1537 Jerusalem: 2419 for1360 they will not3756 receive3858 thy4675 testimony3141 concerning4012 me.1700

19 And I2504 said,2036 Lord,2962 they846 know1987 that3754 I1473 imprisoned2252 5439 and2532 beat1194 in every synagogue2596 4864 them that believed4100 on1909 thee: 4571

20 And2532 when3753 the3588 blood129 of thy4675 martyr3144 Stephen4736 was shed,1632 I848 also2532 was2252 standing by,2186 and2532 consenting4909 unto his848 death,336 and2532 kept5442 the3588 raiment2440 of them that slew337 him.846

21 And2532 he said2036 unto4314 me,3165 Depart: 4198 for3754 I1473 will send1821 thee4571 far hence3112 unto1519 the Gentiles.1484

22 And1161 they gave him audience191 846 unto891 this5127 word,3056 and2532 then lifted up1869 their848 voices,5456 and said,3004 Away142 with such5108 a fellow from575 the3588 earth:1093 for1063 it is not fit2520 3756 that he846 should live.2198

23 And1161 as they846 cried out,2905 and2532 cast off4495 their clothes,2440 and2532 threw906 dust2868 into1519 the3588 air,109

24 The3588 chief captain5506 commanded2753 him846 to be brought71 into1519 the3588 castle,3925 and bade2036 that he846 should be examined426 by scourging;3148 that2443 he might know1921 wherefore1223 3739 156 they cried so against2019 3779 him.846

25 And1161 as5613 they bound4385 him846 with thongs,2438 Paul3972 said2036 unto4314 the centurion1543 that stood by,2476 1487 Is it lawful1832 for you5213 to scourge3147 a man444 that is a Roman,4514 and2532 uncondemned?178

26 When1161 the3588 centurion1543 heard191 that, he went4334 and told518 the3588 chief captain,5506 saying,3004 Take heed3708 what5101 thou3195 doest:4160 for1063 this3778 man444 is2076 a Roman.4514

27 Then1161 the3588 chief captain5506 came,4334 and said2036 unto him,846 Tell3004 me,3427 1487 art1488 thou4771 a Roman?4514 1161 He3588 said,5346 Yea.3483

28 And5037 the3588 chief captain5506 answered,611 With a great4183 sum2774 obtained2932 I1473 this5026 freedom.4174 And1161 Paul3972 said,5346 But1161 I1473 was2532 free born.1080

29 Then3767 straightway2112 they departed868 from575 him846 which should3195 have examined426 him:846 and2532 the3588 chief captain5506 also1161 was afraid,5399 after he knew1921 that3754 he was2076 a Roman,4514 and2532 because3754 he had2258 bound1210 him.846

30 On1161 the3588 morrow,1887 because he would1014 have known1097 the3588 certainty804 wherefore5101 he was accused2723 of3844 the3588 Jews,2453 he loosed3089 him846 from575 his bands,1199 and2532 commanded2753 the3588 chief priests749 and2532 all3650 their848 council4892 to appear,2064 and2532 brought Paul down,2609 3972 and set2476 him before1519 them.846

Chapter 22

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

2 And when they heard him speak to them in the Hebrew tongue (Aramaic), they were the more quiet: And he said,

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 The high priest and all the elders can so testify about me, for it was from them that I received letters to go to the brethren at Damascus, to bring those who were there bound to Jerusalem to be punished.

6 And it came to pass as I drew near to Damascus, at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone round about me.

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and was in accord with his slayers, and was in charge of the garments of them who stoned him.

21 Then he said to me, Depart: for I will send you afar to preach to the Gentiles.

22 They had given Paul audience up to this word, and then they lifted up their voices, and cried out, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried out and cast off their robes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and ordered that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.

25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?

26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes.

28 And the captain answered and said, I obtained Roman citizenship with a great sum of money. Paul answered, But I was free born to it.

29 Immediately those who were ready to scourge him left him alone, and the captain was afraid when he found out that he was a Roman citizen, because he had bound him.

30 The next day, because he desired to know the truthfulness of the charges which the Jews had brought against Paul, he unbound him and commanded the high priests and all their council to appear before him, and he took Paul and brought him down, and set him before them.

1 Men,435 brethren,80 and2532 fathers,3962 hear191 ye my3450 defense627 which I make now3568 unto4314 you.5209

1 BRETHREN and fathers, hear my defense which I now make to you.

2 (And1161 when they heard191 that3754 he spake4377 in the3588 Hebrew1446 tongue1258 to them,846 they kept3930 the more3123 silence:2271 and2532 he saith,)5346

3 I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Ci-li'cia, yet I was brought up in this city under the care and guidance of Ga-ma'li-el, and trained perfectly according to the law of our fathers, and was zealous toward God, just as you are also.

4 And I3739 persecuted1377 this5026 way3598 unto891 the death,2288 binding1195 and2532 delivering3860 into1519 prisons5438 both5037 men435 and2532 women.1135

4 And I persecuted this religion to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

7 And5037 I fell4098 unto1519 the3588 ground,1475 and2532 heard191 a voice5456 saying3004 unto me,3427 Saul,4549 Saul,4549 why5101 persecutest1377 thou me?3165

7 And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

8 And1161 I1473 answered,611 Who5101 art1488 thou, Lord?2962 And5037 he said2036 unto4314 me,3165 I1473 am1510 Jesus2424 of Nazareth,3480 whom3739 thou4771 persecutest.1377

8 And I answered and said, Who are you, my LORD? And he said to me, I am Jesus of Naz'a-reth, whom you persecute.

9 And1161 they that were5607 with4862 me1698 saw2300 indeed3303 the3588 light,5457 and2532 were1096 afraid;1719 but1161 they heard191 not3756 the3588 voice5456 of him that spake2980 to me.3427

9 And the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice that spoke to me.

10 And I said, What shall I do, my LORD? And our LORD said to me, Arise, and go into Da-mas'cus; and there it shall be told to you all things which are appointed for you to do.

11 And1161 when5613 I could not3756 see1689 for575 the3588 glory1391 of that1565 light,5457 being led by the hand5496 of5259 them that were with4895 me,3427 I came2064 into1519 Damascus.1154

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Da-mas'cus.

12 And1161 one5100 Ananias,367 a devout2152 man435 according2596 to the3588 law,3551 having a good report3140 of5259 all3956 the3588 Jews2453 which dwelt2730 there,

12 And a certain man, An-a-ni'as, a righteous man according to the law, as testified by all the Jews concerning him,

13 Came2064 unto4314 me,3165 and2532 stood,2186 and said2036 unto me,3427 Brother80 Saul,4549 receive thy sight.308 And the3588 same846 hour5610 I2504 looked up308 upon1519 him.846

13 Came to me and said, My brother Saul, receive your sight. And instantly my eyes were opened and I looked upon him.

14 And he said to me, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear the voice of his mouth.

15 For3754 thou shalt be2071 his846 witness3144 unto4314 all3956 men444 of what3739 thou hast seen3708 and2532 heard.191

15 And you shall be a witness for him before all men, of all that you have seen and heard.

16 And2532 now3568 why5101 tarriest3195 thou? arise,450 and be baptized,907 and2532 wash away628 thy4675 sins,266 calling on1941 the3588 name3686 of the3588 Lord.2962

16 And now why do you delay? Arise, and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the LORD.

17 And1161 it came to pass,1096 that, when I3427 was come again5290 to1519 Jerusalem,2419 even2532 while I3450 prayed4336 in1722 the3588 temple,2411 I3165 was1096 in1722 a trance;1611

17 And it came to pass that when I returned here to Jerusalem and while praying in the temple,

18 I saw a vision, saying to me, Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive your testimony concerning me.

19 And I2504 said,2036 Lord,2962 they846 know1987 that3754 I1473 imprisoned2252 5439 and2532 beat1194 in every synagogue2596 4864 them that believed4100 on1909 thee: 4571

19 And I said, My LORD, they know that I imprisoned and beat, in every synagogue, those who believed in you:

20 And2532 when3753 the3588 blood129 of thy4675 martyr3144 Stephen4736 was shed,1632 I848 also2532 was2252 standing by,2186 and2532 consenting4909 unto his848 death,336 and2532 kept5442 the3588 raiment2440 of them that slew337 him.846

20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and was in accord with his slayers, and was in charge of the garments of them who stoned him.

21 And2532 he said2036 unto4314 me,3165 Depart: 4198 for3754 I1473 will send1821 thee4571 far hence3112 unto1519 the Gentiles.1484

21 Then he said to me, Depart: for I will send you afar to preach to the Gentiles.

22 They had given Paul audience up to this word, and then they lifted up their voices, and cried out, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

23 And1161 as they846 cried out,2905 and2532 cast off4495 their clothes,2440 and2532 threw906 dust2868 into1519 the3588 air,109

23 And as they cried out and cast off their robes, and threw dust into the air,

24 The3588 chief captain5506 commanded2753 him846 to be brought71 into1519 the3588 castle,3925 and bade2036 that he846 should be examined426 by scourging;3148 that2443 he might know1921 wherefore1223 3739 156 they cried so against2019 3779 him.846

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and ordered that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know for what cause they cried so against him.

25 And when they had bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood over him, Is it lawful for you to scourge a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?

26 When1161 the3588 centurion1543 heard191 that, he went4334 and told518 the3588 chief captain,5506 saying,3004 Take heed3708 what5101 thou3195 doest:4160 for1063 this3778 man444 is2076 a Roman.4514

26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the chief captain and said, Be careful what you do: for this man is a Roman citizen.

27 Then1161 the3588 chief captain5506 came,4334 and said2036 unto him,846 Tell3004 me,3427 1487 art1488 thou4771 a Roman?4514 1161 He3588 said,5346 Yea.3483

27 Then the captain came and said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? Paul said, Yes.
