Chapter 23

1 THEN the whole company of them rose up, and brought him to Pilate;

2 And began to accuse him, saying, We found this man misleading our people, and forbidding to pay the head-tax to Caesar; and he says concerning himself that he is a King, even the Christ.

3 Pilate asked him and said, Are you the king of the Jews? He said to him, You say that.

4 Then Pilate said to the high priests and the people, I cannot find any fault against this man.

5 But they shouted and said, He has stirred up our people, teaching throughout Judaea, and beginning from Galilee even to this place.

6 When Pilate heard the name Galilee, he asked if the man was a Galilean.

7 And when he knew that he was under the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him to Herod, because he was in Jerusalem in those days.

8 When Herod saw Jesus he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things concerning him; and he hoped to see some miracle by him.

9 And he asked him many words; but Jesus gave him no answer.

10 But the high priests and the scribes stood, and accused him bitterly.

11 And Herod and his soldiers insulted him, and mocked him, and dressed him in a scarlet robe, and sent him to Pilate.

12 And that day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other; for there was a longstanding enmity between them.

13 Then Pilate called the high priests and the leaders of the people,

14 And he said to them, You brought me this man, as if he were misleading your people; and behold, I have examined him before your own eyes, and I have found no fault in this man concerning all that you accuse him.

15 Not even has Herod; for I sent him to him; and behold, he has done nothing worthy of death.

16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

17 For there was a custom to release to them one at the feast.

18 But all the people cried out saying, Get rid of him, and release to us Bar-Abbas;

19 Who because of sedition and murder which had happened in the city, was cast into prison.

20 Again Pilate spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.

21 But they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22 And he said to them the third time, What evil has he done? I have found nothing in him, worthy of death; I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

23 But they persisted with loud voices, and asked to crucify him. And their voice and that of the high priests prevailed.

24 Then Pilate commanded to have their request granted.

25 So he released to them the one who because of sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they asked for; and he delivered Jesus to their will.

26 And while they took him away, they laid hold of Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming from the field, and they placed the end of the cross on him, to carry it with Jesus.

27 And many people followed him, and the women who were mourning and wailing over him.

28 But Jesus turned to them and said, O daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me; but weep over yourselves, and over your own children.

29 For behold, the days are coming, in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never gave birth, and the breasts that never gave suck.

30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

31 For if they do these things with the green wood, what will be done with dry wood?

32 And there were coming with him two others, malefactors, to be put to death.

33 And when they came to a place which is called The Skull, they crucified him there, and the malefactors, one on his right and one on his left.

34 And Jesus said, O Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing. And they divided his garments and cast lots over them.

35 The people stood looking on. And even the leaders of the synagogue mocked him, and said, He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God.

36 And the soldiers ridiculed him, as they came near him and offered him vinegar,

37 Saying to him, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

38 There was also an inscription which was written over him, in Greek and Roman, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 Now one of the malefactors who were crucified with him, blasphemed against him, saying, If you are the Christ, save yourself and save us also.

40 But the other rebuked him, and said to him, Do you not fear even God, for you are also in the same judgment?

41 And ours is just, for we are paid as we deserve and as we have done; but he has done nothing wrong.

42 And he said to Jesus, Remember me, my Lord, when you come in your kingdom.

43 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise. *

44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and darkness fell upon the whole earth, until the ninth hour.

45 And the sun was darkened, and the door curtains of the temple were torn in the center.

46 Then Jesus cried with a loud voice and said, O my Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. He said this and passed away.

47 When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, Truly this was a righteous man.

48 And all the people who were gathered together to see this sight, when they saw what had happened, returned, beating their breasts.

49 And all the acquaintances of Jesus stood afar off, and the women who had come with him from Galilee, and they were beholding these things.

50 There was a man named Joseph the counsellor of Arimathaea, a city of Judaea, a good and righteous man.

51 He did not agree with their wishes and their actions; and he waited for the kingdom of God.

52 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53 And he took it down and wrapped it in fine linen, and laid it in a hewn tomb, in which no one was ever laid.

54 This was a Friday, and the sabbath was approaching.

55 The women who had come with him from Galilee were near, and they saw the tomb, and how his body was laid.

56 And they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the sabbath they rested, as it is commanded.

1 І зняли́ся всі їхні збори, і повели до Пилата Його.

2 І зачали оскаржа́ти Його й говорити: „Ми стверди́ли, що Цей ворохо́бить народ наш, і забороняє податок давати кесареві, та й говорить, що Він, — Христос Цар“.

3 І Пила́т запитав Його, кажучи: „Чи Ти Цар Юдейський?“ А Він відказав йому в відповідь: „Сам ти кажеш“...

4 І Пилат сказав первосвященикам та до народу: „Я не знахо́джу жо́дної провини в Цій Люди́ні“.

5 А вони намагались, говорячи: „Він бунтує наро́д, навчаючи в усій Юдеї, від Галілеї почавши аж посі“.

6 А Пилат, вчувши про Галілею, спитав: „Хіба Він галіле́янин?“

7 І, дізнавшись, що Він із влади Ірода, відіслав Його Іродові, бо той в Єрусалимі також перебува́в тими днями.

8 Коли ж Ірод побачив Ісуса, то дуже зрадів, бо він від давнього ча́су бажав Його бачити, — багато за Нього чував, і сподівався побачити чудо яке, що буває від Нього.

9 І багато питався Його, та нічого не відповідав Він йому.

10 І стояли тут первосвященики й книжники, та завзя́то Його оскаржували.

11 Тоді Ірод із ві́йськом своїм ізневажив Його й насміявся, зодягнувши Його в яснобі́лу одіж, і відіслав до Пилата Його.

12 І того дня стали Ірод із Пилатом за при́ятелів між собою, бо давніш ворожне́ча між ними була́.

13 А Пилат скликав первосвящеників, і старшин, і наро́д,

14 і промовив до них: „Привели́ ви мені Чоловіка Цього́, як того́, що бунтує наро́д. А ось я перед вами розвідав, — і не знахо́джу в Люди́ні Оцій ані однієї провини такої, про що ви оскаржуєте.

15 Також Ірод, бо він відіслав Його нам. І ось нічого, що на смерть заслуго́вувало б, Він не вчинив.

16 Отже я покараю Його й відпущу́“.

17 Бо пови́нен був їм відпустити одно́го на свято.

18 А наро́д став кричати й казати: Візьми Цього́, — відпусти ж нам Вара́вву!“

19 А той за повста́ння одне, яке сталося в місті, і за вбивство посаджений був до в'язни́ці.

20 І зно́ву сказав їм Пилат, хотячи́ відпустити Ісуса.

21 Та кричали вони й говорили: „Розіпни, розіпни Його!“

22 Він же втретє промовив до них: „Яке ж зло вчинив Він? Я нічого, що на смерть заслуго́вувало б, на Нім не знайшов. Отже я покараю Його й відпущу́“.

23 А вони сильним криком свого домага́лися, та вимагали розп'я́сти Його. І взяв го́ру крик їхній та первосвящеників.

24 І Пилат присудив, щоб було́, як просили вони:

25 відпустив їм Вара́вву, поса́дженого за повста́ння та вбивство в в'язницю, за якого просили вони, а Ісуса віддав їхній волі...

26 І як Його повели́, то схопи́ли якогось Си́мона із Кіріне́ї, що з поля вертався, і поклали на нього хреста, щоб він ніс за Ісусом!

27 А за Ним ішов на́товп великий людей і жінок, які плакали та голосили за Ним.

28 А Ісус обернувся до них та й промовив: „Дочки єрусалимські, не ридайте за Мною, — за собою ридайте й за ді́тьми своїми!

29 Бо ось дні настають, коли скажуть: „Блаженні неплідні, та утро́би, які не родили, і груди, що не годували“.

30 Тоді стануть казати гора́м: „Поспадайте на нас“, а узгі́р'ям: „Покрийте нас!“

31 Бо коли таке роблять зеленому дереву, то що́ буде сухому?“

32 І вели́ з Ним також двох злочинників інших, щоб убити.

33 А коли прибули́ на те місце, що звуть „Черепо́вище“, розп'яли́ тут Його та злочинників, — одно́го право́руч, а одного ліво́руч.

34 Ісус же промовив: „Отче, відпусти їм, — бо не знають, що чинять вони!“ А як Його одіж ділили, то кидали же́реба.

35 А люди стояли й дивились... Насміхалися з ними й старши́ни, говорячи: „Він інших спасав, — нехай Сам Себе ви́зволить, коли Він Христос, Божий Обра́нець!“

36 І вояки́ глузували з Нього: приступаючи, о́цет Йому подавали,

37 і казали: „Коли Цар Ти Юдейський, — спаси Себе Сам!“

38 Був же й напис над Ним письмом грецьким, латинським і гебрейським написаний: „Це — Цар Юдейський“.

39 А один із розп'я́тих злочинників став зневажати Його й говорити: „Чи Ти не Христос? То спаси Себе й нас!“

40 Обізвався ж той другий, і докоряв йому, кажучи: „Чи не боїшся ти Бога, коли й сам на те саме засуджений?

41 Але ми справедливо засу́джені, і належну заплату за вчинки свої беремо́, — Цей же жодного зла не вчинив“.

42 І сказав до Ісуса: „Спогада́й мене, Господи, коли при́йдеш у Царство Своє!“

43 І промовив до нього Ісус: „Попра́вді кажу́ тобі: ти бу́деш зо Мною сьогодні в раю́!“

44 Наближалася шоста година, — і те́мрява стала по ці́лій землі аж до години дев'ятої.

45 І сонце затьми́лось, і в храмі завіса роздерлась надво́є.

46 І, скрикнувши голосом гучним, промовив Ісус: „Отче, у руки Твої віддаю Свого духа!“ І це прорікши, Він духа віддав.

47 Коли ж сотник побачив, що́ сталось, він Бога просла́вив, говорячи: „Дійсно праведний був Чоловік Цей!“

48 І ввесь на́товп, який зійшовсь на видо́вище це, як побачив, що́ сталось, — бив у гру́ди себе та вертався.

49 Усі ж знайо́мі Його й ті жінки́, що прийшли були з Ним із Галілеї, здалека стояли й дивились на це.

50 І ось муж, на ім'я́ йому Йо́сип, що був радником синедріону, люди́на шановна і праведна, —

51 не пристав він до ради та чину їх, — із Аримате́ї, юдейського міста, що й сам сподівався Божого Царства, —

52 цей прийшов до Пилата, і тіла Ісусового став просити.

53 І Йо́сип, знявши Його, обгорнув у полотно, і покла́в Його в гро́бі, що в скелі був ви́січений, і що в ньому ніко́ли ніхто не лежав.

54 День той був Приготува́ння, і наставала субота.

55 А жінки́, що прийшли були з Ним із Галілеї, ішли слідо́м, і вони бачили гро́ба, і як покладене тіло Його.

56 Повернувшись, вони наготува́ли па́хощів і мира, а в суботу, за заповіддю, спочивали.

2 І зачали оскаржа́ти Його й говорити: „Ми стверди́ли, що Цей ворохо́бить народ наш, і забороняє податок давати кесареві, та й говорить, що Він, — Христос Цар“.

3 Pilate asked him and said, Are you the king of the Jews? He said to him, You say that.

3 І Пила́т запитав Його, кажучи: „Чи Ти Цар Юдейський?“ А Він відказав йому в відповідь: „Сам ти кажеш“...

4 Then Pilate said to the high priests and the people, I cannot find any fault against this man.

4 І Пилат сказав первосвященикам та до народу: „Я не знахо́джу жо́дної провини в Цій Люди́ні“.

5 But they shouted and said, He has stirred up our people, teaching throughout Judaea, and beginning from Galilee even to this place.

5 А вони намагались, говорячи: „Він бунтує наро́д, навчаючи в усій Юдеї, від Галілеї почавши аж посі“.

16 Отже я покараю Його й відпущу́“.

21 Та кричали вони й говорили: „Розіпни, розіпни Його!“

24 І Пилат присудив, щоб було́, як просили вони:

25 So he released to them the one who because of sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they asked for; and he delivered Jesus to their will.

25 відпустив їм Вара́вву, поса́дженого за повста́ння та вбивство в в'язницю, за якого просили вони, а Ісуса віддав їхній волі...

26 And while they took him away, they laid hold of Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming from the field, and they placed the end of the cross on him, to carry it with Jesus.

26 І як Його повели́, то схопи́ли якогось Си́мона із Кіріне́ї, що з поля вертався, і поклали на нього хреста, щоб він ніс за Ісусом!

27 And many people followed him, and the women who were mourning and wailing over him.

27 А за Ним ішов на́товп великий людей і жінок, які плакали та голосили за Ним.

28 But Jesus turned to them and said, O daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me; but weep over yourselves, and over your own children.

28 А Ісус обернувся до них та й промовив: „Дочки єрусалимські, не ридайте за Мною, — за собою ридайте й за ді́тьми своїми!

29 Бо ось дні настають, коли скажуть: „Блаженні неплідні, та утро́би, які не родили, і груди, що не годували“.

30 Тоді стануть казати гора́м: „Поспадайте на нас“, а узгі́р'ям: „Покрийте нас!“

31 For if they do these things with the green wood, what will be done with dry wood?

33 А коли прибули́ на те місце, що звуть „Черепо́вище“, розп'яли́ тут Його та злочинників, — одно́го право́руч, а одного ліво́руч.

34 Ісус же промовив: „Отче, відпусти їм, — бо не знають, що чинять вони!“ А як Його одіж ділили, то кидали же́реба.

35 The people stood looking on. And even the leaders of the synagogue mocked him, and said, He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God.

35 А люди стояли й дивились... Насміхалися з ними й старши́ни, говорячи: „Він інших спасав, — нехай Сам Себе ви́зволить, коли Він Христос, Божий Обра́нець!“

36 And the soldiers ridiculed him, as they came near him and offered him vinegar,

36 І вояки́ глузували з Нього: приступаючи, о́цет Йому подавали,

37 Saying to him, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

37 і казали: „Коли Цар Ти Юдейський, — спаси Себе Сам!“

38 Був же й напис над Ним письмом грецьким, латинським і гебрейським написаний: „Це — Цар Юдейський“.

39 А один із розп'я́тих злочинників став зневажати Його й говорити: „Чи Ти не Христос? То спаси Себе й нас!“

40 Обізвався ж той другий, і докоряв йому, кажучи: „Чи не боїшся ти Бога, коли й сам на те саме засуджений?

41 And ours is just, for we are paid as we deserve and as we have done; but he has done nothing wrong.

41 Але ми справедливо засу́джені, і належну заплату за вчинки свої беремо́, — Цей же жодного зла не вчинив“.

42 And he said to Jesus, Remember me, my Lord, when you come in your kingdom.

42 І сказав до Ісуса: „Спогада́й мене, Господи, коли при́йдеш у Царство Своє!“
