第3章

1 該撒提庇留在位之十五年、本丟彼拉多爲猶太方伯、希律爲分封之君、國於加利利、其兄弟腓力、爲分封之君、國於以土利亞、及特拉可尼地、呂撒聶爲分封之君、國於亞比利尼、

2 亞那該亞法爲祭司長時、撒加利亞子約翰居於野、上帝之命降之、

3 乃來約但四方、傳悔改之洗禮、俾得罪赦、

4 如書載先知以賽亞言云、野有聲呼云、備主道、直其徑、

5 諸谷填之、岡陵卑之、屈曲使直、崎嶇使平、

6 凡有血氣者、得見上帝救主、

7 衆出受洗、約翰曰、蝮類乎、誰示爾避後日之刑乎、

8 故當結果、以彰悔改、勿自以爲亞伯拉罕我祖也、吾語汝、上帝能起此石、爲亞伯拉罕子孫焉、

9 今斧置樹根、凡樹不結善果者、則斫之委火、

10 衆問曰、我當何爲、

11 曰、有二衣、則分彼無衣者、有食亦然、

12 稅吏至、欲受洗、問曰、先生、我當何爲、

13 曰、定賦之外勿取、

14 軍士問曰、我當何爲、曰、勿强索人、勿誣詐人、以所得之糧足矣、〇

15 民望基督、疑約翰卽是否、

16 約翰謂衆曰、我以水施洗爾、惟有勝我者來、解其履帶、我亦不堪、彼將以聖神及火施洗爾、

17 其手執箕、將盡簸厥禾塲、斂穀入倉、而燒糠以不滅之火、

18 約翰多方勸慰、報嘉音於民、

19 分封之君希律、以兄弟腓力妻希羅底事、及所爲不道故、見謫於約翰、

20 轉增其暴、囚約翰於獄、〇

21 當衆民受洗畢、耶穌亦受洗、祈禱時、天開、

22 聖神降臨其上、狀如鴿、自天有聲云、爾乃我愛子、我所喜悅者、〇

23 耶穌年甫三十、人以爲約瑟子、其上爲希里、

24 其上爲馬塔、其上爲利未、其上爲麥基、其上爲雅拿、其上爲約瑟、

25 其上爲馬大提亞、其上爲亞麽士、其上爲拿翁、其上爲以士里、其上爲拿該、

26 其上爲馬押、其上爲馬大提亞、其上爲西美、其上爲約瑟、其上爲猶大、

27 其上爲約亞拿、其上爲利撒、其上爲所羅把伯、其上爲撒拉鐵、其上爲尼利、

Chapter 3

1 IN the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, during the governorship of Pontius Pilate in Judaea, when Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanius tetrarch of Abilene,

2 During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

3 And he came throughout the country around Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, who said, The voice which calls in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make the paths of our God straight in the plain.

5 Let all the valleys be filled up, and all the mountains and hills be levelled; let the crooked places be made straight, and the rough places like a plain;

6 And let every flesh see the salvation of God.

7 And he said to the people, who were coming to him to be baptized, O offspring of scorpions, who has warned you to escape from the anger which is coming?

8 Therefore bring forth fruits which are worthy of repentance; and do not begin to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father; for I say to you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

9 Behold, the axe is already placed at the root of the trees; therefore every tree which bears not good fruits will be cut down and dropped in the fire.

10 And the people asked him saying, What then shall we do?

11 He answered and said to them, He who has two shirts, let him give to him who has not; and he who has food, let him do likewise.

12 And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said to him, Teacher, what shall we do?

13 He said to them, Do not exact anything more over what is commanded you to exact.

14 And the soldiers also asked him saying, What shall we do? And he said to them, Do not molest any man, and do not despise any man; your own wages should be enough for you.

15 While the people were placing their hope on John, and all of them were thinking in their hearts, that perhaps he is the Christ;

16 John answered and said to them, Behold, I baptize you with water; but one is coming after me, who is greater than I, the strings of whose shoes I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire;

17 He holds a shovel in his hand, and purifies his threshing; the wheat he gathers into his barns, and the straw he burns in the unquenchable fire.

18 Many other things also, he taught and preached to the people.

19 Now Herod the tetrarch, because he was rebuked by John concerning Herodias wife of Philip his brother, and for all the evil things that he was doing,

20 Added this also to them all, that he put John into prison.

21 It came to pass when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while he prayed the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Spirit descended on him, like a dove, and a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, with whom I am pleased.

23 Now Jesus was about thirty years old, and he was supposed to be the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,

24 The son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,

25 The son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,

26 The son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Juda,

27 The son of John, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,

28 The son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Kosam, the son of Elmodad, the son of Er,

29 The son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Mattitha, the son of Levi,

30 The son of Simon, the son of Juda, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim,

31 The son of Melea, the son of Mani, the son of Matta, the son of Nathan, the son of David,

32 The son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,

33 The son of Aminadab, the son of Aram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Juda,

34 The son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

35 The son of Serug, the son of Arau, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shalah,

36 The son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,

37 The son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,

38 The son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, who was of God.

10 衆問曰、我當何爲、	10 And the people asked him saying, What then shall we do?

12 稅吏至、欲受洗、問曰、先生、我當何爲、	12 And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said to him, Teacher, what shall we do?
13 曰、定賦之外勿取、	13 He said to them, Do not exact anything more over what is commanded you to exact.
14 軍士問曰、我當何爲、曰、勿强索人、勿誣詐人、以所得之糧足矣、〇	14 And the soldiers also asked him saying, What shall we do? And he said to them, Do not molest any man, and do not despise any man; your own wages should be enough for you.
15 民望基督、疑約翰卽是否、	15 While the people were placing their hope on John, and all of them were thinking in their hearts, that perhaps he is the Christ;
16 約翰謂衆曰、我以水施洗爾、惟有勝我者來、解其履帶、我亦不堪、彼將以聖神及火施洗爾、	16 John answered and said to them, Behold, I baptize you with water; but one is coming after me, who is greater than I, the strings of whose shoes I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire;
17 其手執箕、將盡簸厥禾塲、斂穀入倉、而燒糠以不滅之火、	17 He holds a shovel in his hand, and purifies his threshing; the wheat he gathers into his barns, and the straw he burns in the unquenchable fire.
18 約翰多方勸慰、報嘉音於民、	18 Many other things also, he taught and preached to the people.
19 分封之君希律、以兄弟腓力妻希羅底事、及所爲不道故、見謫於約翰、	19 Now Herod the tetrarch, because he was rebuked by John concerning Herodias wife of Philip his brother, and for all the evil things that he was doing,
20 轉增其暴、囚約翰於獄、〇	20 Added this also to them all, that he put John into prison.
21 當衆民受洗畢、耶穌亦受洗、祈禱時、天開、	21 It came to pass when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while he prayed the heaven was opened,
22 聖神降臨其上、狀如鴿、自天有聲云、爾乃我愛子、我所喜悅者、〇	22 And the Holy Spirit descended on him, like a dove, and a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, with whom I am pleased.
23 耶穌年甫三十、人以爲約瑟子、其上爲希里、	23 Now Jesus was about thirty years old, and he was supposed to be the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,
