Chapter 17

Now1161 when they had passed1353 through1353 Amphipolis295 and Apollonia,624 they came2064 to Thessalonica,2332 where3699 was a synagogue4864 of the Jews:2453

And Paul,3972 as his manner1486 was, went1525 in to them, and three5140 sabbath4521 days reasoned1256 with them out of the scriptures,1124

Opening1272 and alleging,3908 that Christ5547 must1163 needs have suffered,3958 and risen450 again450 from the dead;3498 and that this3778 Jesus,2424 whom3739 I preach2605 to you, is Christ.5547

And some5100 of them believed,3982 and consorted4345 with Paul3972 and Silas;4609 and of the devout4576 Greeks1672 a great4183 multitude,4128 and of the chief4413 women1135 not a few.3641

But the Jews2453 which believed544 not, moved2206 with envy,2206 took4355 to them certain5100 lewd4190 fellows435 of the baser60 sort, and gathered3792 a company,3792 and set2350 all the city4172 on an uproar,2350 and assaulted2186 the house3614 of Jason,2394 and sought2212 to bring71 them out to the people.1218

And when they found2147 them not, they drew4951 Jason2394 and certain5100 brothers80 to the rulers4173 of the city,4173 crying,994 These3778 that have turned387 the world3625 upside387 down387 are come3918 here1759 also;2532

Whom3739 Jason2394 has received:5264 and these3778 all3956 do4160 contrary561 to the decrees1378 of Caesar,2541 saying3004 that there is another2087 king,935 one Jesus.2424

And they troubled5015 the people3793 and the rulers4173 of the city,4173 when they heard191 these5023 things.

And when they had taken2983 security2425 of Jason,2394 and of the other,3062 they let630 them go.630

And the brothers80 immediately2112 sent1599 away1599 Paul3972 and Silas4609 by night3571 to Berea:960 who3748 coming3854 thither3854 went549 into1519 the synagogue4864 of the Jews.2453

These3778 were more noble2104 than those3588 in Thessalonica,2332 in that they received1209 the word3056 with all3956 readiness4288 of mind,4288 and searched350 the scriptures1124 daily,2596 2596 whether1487 those5023 things were so.3779

Therefore3767 many4183 of them believed;4100 also2532 of honorable2158 women1135 which3588 were Greeks,1674 and of men,435 not a few.3641

But when5613 the Jews2453 of Thessalonica2332 had knowledge1097 that the word3056 of God2316 was preached2605 of Paul3972 at1722 Berea,960 they came2064 thither1563 also,2546 and stirred4531 up the people.3793

And then5119 immediately2112 the brothers80 sent1821 away1821 Paul3972 to go4198 as it were to the sea:2281 but Silas4609 and Timotheus5095 stayed5278 there1563 still.

And they that conducted2525 Paul3972 brought71 him to Athens:116 and receiving2983 a commandment1785 to Silas4609 and Timotheus5095 for to come2064 to him with all5613 5033 speed,5613 5033 they departed.1826

Now1161 while Paul3972 waited1551 for them at1722 Athens,116 his spirit4151 was stirred3947 in him, when he saw2334 the city4172 wholly given to idolatry.2712

Therefore3767 disputed1256 he in the synagogue4864 with the Jews,2453 and with the devout4576 persons, and in the market58 daily2596 with them that met3909 with him.

Then1161 certain5100 philosophers5386 of the Epicureans,1946 and of the Stoicks,4770 encountered4820 him. And some5100 said,3004 What5101 will2309 this3778 babbler4691 say?3004 other some,3588 He seems1380 to be a setter2604 forth2604 of strange3581 gods:1140 because3754 he preached2097 to them Jesus,2424 and the resurrection.386

And they took1949 him, and brought71 him to Areopagus,697 saying,3004 May1410 we know1097 what5101 this3778 new2537 doctrine,1322 whereof you speak,2980 is?

For you bring1533 certain5100 strange3579 things to our ears:189 we would know1097 therefore3767 what5101 these5023 things mean.2309 1511

(For all3956 the Athenians117 and strangers3581 which3588 were there1927 spent2119 their time2119 in nothing3762 else,2087 but either2228 to tell,3004 or2532 to hear191 some5100 new2537 thing.)

Then1161 Paul3972 stood2476 in the middle3319 of Mars'697 hill,697 and said,5346 You men435 of Athens,117 I perceive2334 that in all3956 things you are too1174 superstitious.1174

For as I passed1330 by, and beheld333 your5216 devotions,4574 I found2147 an altar1041 with this3739 inscription,1924 TO THE UNKNOWN57 GOD.2316 Whom3739 therefore3767 you ignorantly50 worship,2151 him declare2605 I to you.

God2316 that made4160 the world2889 and all3956 things therein,1722 846 seeing that he is Lord2962 of heaven3772 and earth,1093 dwells2730 not in temples3485 made5499 with hands;5499

Neither3761 is worshipped2323 with men's444 hands,5495 as though he needed4326 any5100 thing, seeing he gives1325 to all3956 life,2222 and breath,4157 and all3956 things;

And has made4160 of one1520 blood129 all3956 nations1484 of men444 for to dwell2730 on1909 all3956 the face4383 of the earth,1093 and has determined3724 the times2540 before4384 appointed,4384 and the bounds3734 of their habitation;2733

That they should seek2212 the Lord,2962 if1487 haply686 they might feel5584 after him, and find2147 him, though2544 he be not far3112 from every1538 one1520 of us:

For in him we live,2198 and move,2795 and have our being;2070 as certain5100 also2532 of your2596 5209 own2596 poets4163 have said,2046 For we are also2532 his offspring.1085

For as much then3767 as we are the offspring1085 of God,2316 we ought3784 not to think3543 that the Godhead2304 is like3664 to gold,5557 or2228 silver,696 or2228 stone,3037 graven5480 by are5078 and man's444 device.1761

And the times5550 of this3588 ignorance52 God2316 winked5237 at; but now3568 commands3853 all3956 men444 every3837 where3837 to repent:3340

Because1360 he has appointed2476 a day,2250 in the which3739 he will3195 judge2919 the world3625 in righteousness1343 by that man435 whom3739 he has ordained;3724 whereof he has given3930 assurance4102 to all3956 men, in that he has raised450 him from the dead.3498

And when they heard191 of the resurrection386 of the dead,3498 some3588 3303 mocked:5512 and others3588 said,2036 We will hear191 you again3825 of this5127 matter.

So3779 Paul3972 departed1831 from among3319 them.

However, certain5100 men435 joined2853 to him, and believed:4100 among1722 the which3739 was Dionysius1354 the Areopagite,698 and a woman1135 named3686 Damaris,1152 and others2087 with them.
