Chapter 10

1 There was a certain5100 man435 in Caesarea2542 called3686 Cornelius,2883 a centurion1543 of the band4686 called2564 the Italian2483 band,4686

2 A devout2152 man, and one that feared5399 God2316 with all3956 his house,3624 which gave4160 much4183 alms1654 to the people,2992 and prayed1189 to God2316 always.1275

3 He saw1492 in a vision3705 evidently5320 about5616 the ninth1766 hour5610 of the day2250 an angel32 of God2316 coming1525 in to him, and saying2036 to him, Cornelius.2883

4 And when he looked816 on him, he was afraid,1719 and said,2036 What5101 is it, Lord?2962 And he said2036 to him, Your prayers4335 and your3588 alms1654 are come305 up for a memorial3422 before1799 God.2316

5 And now3568 send3992 men435 to Joppa,2445 and call3343 for one Simon,4613 whose3739 surname1941 is Peter:4074

6 He lodges3579 with one5100 Simon4613 a tanner,1038 whose3739 house3614 is by the sea2281 side:3844 he shall tell2980 you what5101 you ought1163 to do.4160

7 And when5613 the angel32 which3588 spoke2980 to Cornelius2883 was departed,565 he called5455 two1417 of his household3610 servants, and a devout2152 soldier4757 of them that waited4342 on4342 him continually;4342

8 And when he had declared1834 all537 these things to them, he sent649 them to Joppa.2445

9 On the morrow,1887 as they went3596 on their journey,3596 and drew near1448 to the city,4172 Peter4074 went305 up on the housetop1430 to pray4336 about4012 the sixth1623 hour:5610

10 And he became1096 very4361 hungry,4361 and would2309 have eaten:1089 but while they made3903 ready,3903 he fell1968 into1909 a trance,1611

11 And saw2334 heaven3772 opened,455 and a certain5100 vessel4632 descending2597 on him, as it had been a great3173 sheet3607 knit1210 at the four5064 corners,746 and let2524 down2524 to the earth:1093

12 Wherein1722 3757 were all3956 manner1485 of four footed5074 beasts5074 of the earth,1093 and wild2342 beasts,2342 and creeping2062 things, and fowls4071 of the air.3772

13 And there came1096 a voice5456 to him, Rise,450 Peter;4074 kill,2380 and eat.5315

14 But Peter4074 said,2036 Not so,3365 Lord;2962 for I have never3763 eaten5315 any3956 thing that is common2839 or2228 unclean.169

15 And the voice5456 spoke to him again3825 the second1208 time, What3739 God2316 has cleansed,2511 that call2840 not you common.2840

16 This5124 was done1096 thrice:5151 and the vessel4632 was received353 up again3825 into1519 heaven.3772

17 Now1161 while5613 Peter4074 doubted1280 in himself1438 what5101 this3588 vision3705 which3739 he had seen1492 should mean,1498 behold,2400 the men435 which3588 were sent649 from Cornelius2883 had made1239 enquiry1331 for Simon's4613 house,3614 and stood2186 before1909 the gate,4440

18 And called,5455 and asked4441 whether1487 Simon,4613 which3588 was surnamed1941 Peter,4074 were lodged3579 there.1759

19 While Peter4074 thought1760 on4012 the vision,3705 the Spirit4151 said2036 to him, Behold,2400 three5140 men435 seek2212 you.

20 Arise450 therefore,235 and get2597 you down,2597 and go4198 with them, doubting1252 nothing:3367 for I have sent649 them.

21 Then1161 Peter4074 went2597 down2597 to the men435 which3588 were sent649 to him from Cornelius;2883 and said,2036 Behold,2400 I am1510 he whom3739 you seek:2212 what5101 is the cause156 why1223 3739 you are come?3918

22 And they said,2036 Cornelius2883 the centurion,1543 a just1342 man,435 and one that fears5399 God,2316 and of good18 report3140 among5259 all3650 the nation1484 of the Jews,2453 was warned5537 from God by an holy40 angel32 to send3343 for you into1519 his house,3624 and to hear191 words4487 of you.

23 Then3767 called1528 he them in, and lodged3579 them. And on the morrow1887 Peter4074 went1831 away1831 with them, and certain5100 brothers80 from Joppa2445 accompanied4905 him.

24 And the morrow1887 after3326 they entered1525 into1519 Caesarea.2542 And Cornelius2883 waited4328 for them, and he had called4779 together4779 his kinsmen4773 and near316 friends.5384

25 And as Peter4074 was coming1525 in, Cornelius2883 met4876 him, and fell4098 down at1909 his feet,4228 and worshipped4352 him.

26 But Peter4074 took1453 him up, saying,3004 Stand450 up; I myself also2504 am1510 a man.444

27 And as he talked4926 with him, he went1525 in, and found2147 many4183 that were come4905 together.4905

28 And he said5346 to them, You know1987 how5613 that it is an unlawful111 thing for a man435 that is a Jew2453 to keep2853 company,2853 or2228 come4334 to one of another246 nation;246 but God2316 has showed1166 me that I should not call3004 any3367 man444 common2839 or2228 unclean.169

29 Therefore1352 came2064 I to you without369 gainsaying,369 as soon as I was sent3343 for: I ask4441 therefore3767 for what5101 intent3056 you have sent3343 for me?

30 And Cornelius2883 said,5346 Four5067 days2250 ago575 I was fasting3522 until3360 this5026 hour;5610 and at the ninth1766 hour5610 I prayed4336 in my house,3624 and, behold,2400 a man435 stood2476 before1799 me in bright2986 clothing,2066

31 And said,5346 Cornelius,2883 your prayer4335 is heard,1522 and your4675 alms1654 are had in remembrance3415 in the sight1799 of God.2316

32 Send3992 therefore3767 to Joppa,2445 and call3333 here3333 Simon,4613 whose3739 surname1941 is Peter;4074 he is lodged3579 in the house3614 of one Simon4613 a tanner1038 by the sea2281 side:3844 who,3739 when he comes,3854 shall speak2980 to you.

33 Immediately1824 therefore3767 I sent3992 to you; and you have well2573 done4160 that you are come.3854 Now3568 therefore3767 are we all3956 here3918 present3918 before1799 God,2316 to hear191 all3956 things that are commanded4367 you of God.2316

34 Then1161 Peter4074 opened455 his mouth,4750 and said,2036 Of a truth225 I perceive2638 that God2316 is no3756 respecter4381 of persons:4381

35 But in every3956 nation1484 he that fears5399 him, and works2038 righteousness,1343 is accepted1184 with him.

36 The word3056 which3739 God sent649 to the children5207 of Israel,2474 preaching2097 peace1515 by Jesus2424 Christ:5547 (he is Lord2962 of all:3956)

37 That word,4487 I say, you know,1492 which was published1096 throughout2596 all3650 Judaea,2449 and began756 from Galilee,1056 after3326 the baptism908 which3739 John2491 preached;2784

38 How5613 God2316 anointed5548 Jesus2424 of Nazareth3478 with the Holy40 Ghost4151 and with power:1411 who3739 went1330 about1330 doing2109 good,2109 and healing2390 all3956 that were oppressed2616 of the devil;1228 for God2316 was with him.

39 And we are witnesses3144 of all3956 things which3739 he did4160 both5037 in the land5561 of the Jews,2453 and in Jerusalem;2419 whom3739 they slew337 and hanged2910 on1909 a tree:3586

40 Him God2316 raised1453 up the third5154 day,2250 and showed1325 him openly;1717

41 Not to all3956 the people,2992 but to witnesses3144 chosen4401 before4401 God,2316 even to us, who3748 did eat4906 and drink4844 with him after3326 he rose450 from the dead.3498

42 And he commanded3853 us to preach2784 to the people,2992 and to testify1263 that it is he which3588 was ordained3724 of God2316 to be the Judge2923 of quick2198 and dead.3498

43 To him give all3956 the prophets4396 witness,3140 that through1223 his name3686 whoever3956 3588 believes4100 in him shall receive2983 remission859 of sins.266

44 While Peter4074 yet2089 spoke2980 these5023 words,4487 the Holy40 Ghost4151 fell1968 on1909 all3956 them which heard191 the word.3056

45 And they of the circumcision4061 which believed4103 were astonished,1839 as many3745 as came4905 with Peter,4074 because3754 that on1909 the Gentiles1484 also2532 was poured1632 out the gift1431 of the Holy40 Ghost.4151

46 For they heard191 them speak2980 with tongues,1100 and magnify3170 God.2316 Then5119 answered611 Peter,4074

47 Can1410 any5100 man5100 forbid2967 water,5204 that these5128 should not be baptized,907 which3748 have received2983 the Holy40 Ghost4151 as well2532 as we?

48 And he commanded4367 them to be baptized907 in the name3686 of the Lord.2962 Then5119 prayed2065 they him to tarry1961 certain5100 days.2250

Chapter 10

1 THERE was in Cµs-a-re'a a man called Cornelius, a centurion of the regiment which is called the Italian,

2 A righteous and God-fearing man as were all his household; which gave much alms to the people, and always sought after God.

3 Very openly in a vision about three o'clock in the afternoon he saw an angel of God who came in to him, and said to him, Cornelius.

4 And he looked at the angel and was afraid, and he said, What is it, my LORD? And the angel said to him, Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.

5 And now send men to the city of Joppa, and bring here Simon who is called Peter:

6 Behold he is staying with Simon Bur-saya, the tanner, whose house is by the seaside.

7 And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household, and a soldier who believed in God and was obedient to him;

8 And he related to them everything that he had seen, and sent them to Joppa.

9 The next day, while they were on their journey, drawing near to the city, Simon Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about noontime.

10 And he became hungry, and wanted to eat: but while they were preparing food for him, he was seized with a sudden faintness.

11 And he saw the sky open and something fastened at the four corners, resembling a large linen cloth, was let down from heaven to the earth:

12 And there were in it all kind of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air.

13 And there came a voice to him, saying, Simon Peter, rise; kill and eat.

14 But Simon Peter said, Far be it, my LORD; for I have never eaten anything which was unclean and defiled.

15 And again the voice came to him a second time, What God has cleansed, you should not call unclean.

16 This happened the third time: then the cloth was lifted up to the heaven.

17 Now while Simon Peter was bewildered, wondering in himself what the vision he had seen should mean, the men who were sent by Cornelius arrived, and enquired for the house in which Simon Peter had been staying, and they came and stood at the door of the courtyard.

18 And from there they called and asked if Simon who is called Peter stayed there.

19 While Simon Peter meditated about the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold three men seek you.

20 Arise, go down, and go with them, without doubt in your mind: for I have sent them.

21 Then Simon Peter went down to the men and said, I am the man you seek. What is the purpose of your mission?

22 They said to him, A man called Cornelius, a righteous and God-fearing centurion of whom all the Jewish people speak well, was told in a vision by a holy angel to send and bring you to his house and to hear words from you.

23 So Simon Peter brought them into the place where he was staying and welcomed them. The next day he arose and went with them, and a few men from amongst the brethren of Joppa accompanied him.

24 And the next day they entered Cµs-are'a. And Cornelius was waiting for them, and all his relatives and also his dear friends were assembled with him.

25 And just as Simon Peter was entering, Cornelius met him and threw himself at his feet and worshipped him.

26 But Simon Peter raised him, saying, Stand up; I am but a man also.

27 And after he had talked with him, he went in and found a great many people had come there.

28 So he said to them, You know well that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with a stranger who is not of his tribe; but God has showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

29 This is why I came at once when you sent for me: but now let me ask you, for what reason have you sent for me?

30 Then Cornelius said to him, Four days I have been fasting; and at three o'clock in the afternoon while I was praying in my house, a man dressed in white garments stood before me.

31 And said to me, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are a memorial before God.

32 But send to the city of Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; behold he is staying in the house of Simon Bur-sa'ya, the tanner, by the seaside: and he will come and talk with you.

33 At that very time I sent for you, and you have done well to come. Behold we are all here present before you, and we wish to hear everything commanded thee from God.

34 Then Simon Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35 But among all people, he who fears him and works righteousness is accepted with him.

36 For God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace and tranquility by Jesus Christ: he is the LORD of all.

37 And you also are familiar with the news which was published throughout Judµa, which sprang from Galilee, after the baptism preached by John;

38 Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power, and who, because God was with him, went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil.

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did throughout the land of Judµa and in Jerusalem. This very one the Jews crucified on a cross and killed him:

40 Him God raised on the third day, and showed him openly;

41 Not to all the people, but to us who have been chosen by God to be his witnesses, for we did eat and drink with him after his resurrection from the dead.

42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify, that it is he who was ordained by God to be the judge of the living and of the dead.

43 To him, all the prophets testified that whosoever believes in his name shall receive remission of sins.

44 While Simon Peter spoke these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all who heard the word.

45 And the Jewish converts who had come with him were seized with amazement because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also;

46 For they heard them speak with divers tongues, and magnify God.

47 Then Simon Peter said to them, Can any man forbid water, that these people who have received the Holy Spirit, just as we have, should not be baptized?

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. And they urged him to remain with them a few days.

12 And there were in it all kind of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air.

13 And there came1096 a voice5456 to him, Rise,450 Peter;4074 kill,2380 and eat.5315

13 And there came a voice to him, saying, Simon Peter, rise; kill and eat.

14 But Peter4074 said,2036 Not so,3365 Lord;2962 for I have never3763 eaten5315 any3956 thing that is common2839 or2228 unclean.169

14 But Simon Peter said, Far be it, my LORD; for I have never eaten anything which was unclean and defiled.

17 Now while Simon Peter was bewildered, wondering in himself what the vision he had seen should mean, the men who were sent by Cornelius arrived, and enquired for the house in which Simon Peter had been staying, and they came and stood at the door of the courtyard.

18 And called,5455 and asked4441 whether1487 Simon,4613 which3588 was surnamed1941 Peter,4074 were lodged3579 there.1759

18 And from there they called and asked if Simon who is called Peter stayed there.

19 While Peter4074 thought1760 on4012 the vision,3705 the Spirit4151 said2036 to him, Behold,2400 three5140 men435 seek2212 you.

24 And the next day they entered Cµs-are'a. And Cornelius was waiting for them, and all his relatives and also his dear friends were assembled with him.

25 And as Peter4074 was coming1525 in, Cornelius2883 met4876 him, and fell4098 down at1909 his feet,4228 and worshipped4352 him.

25 And just as Simon Peter was entering, Cornelius met him and threw himself at his feet and worshipped him.

26 But Peter4074 took1453 him up, saying,3004 Stand450 up; I myself also2504 am1510 a man.444

26 But Simon Peter raised him, saying, Stand up; I am but a man also.

27 And as he talked4926 with him, he went1525 in, and found2147 many4183 that were come4905 together.4905

27 And after he had talked with him, he went in and found a great many people had come there.

28 So he said to them, You know well that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with a stranger who is not of his tribe; but God has showed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

29 Therefore1352 came2064 I to you without369 gainsaying,369 as soon as I was sent3343 for: I ask4441 therefore3767 for what5101 intent3056 you have sent3343 for me?

29 This is why I came at once when you sent for me: but now let me ask you, for what reason have you sent for me?

30 And Cornelius2883 said,5346 Four5067 days2250 ago575 I was fasting3522 until3360 this5026 hour;5610 and at the ninth1766 hour5610 I prayed4336 in my house,3624 and, behold,2400 a man435 stood2476 before1799 me in bright2986 clothing,2066

30 Then Cornelius said to him, Four days I have been fasting; and at three o'clock in the afternoon while I was praying in my house, a man dressed in white garments stood before me.

31 And said,5346 Cornelius,2883 your prayer4335 is heard,1522 and your4675 alms1654 are had in remembrance3415 in the sight1799 of God.2316

31 And said to me, Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your alms are a memorial before God.

32 But send to the city of Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; behold he is staying in the house of Simon Bur-sa'ya, the tanner, by the seaside: and he will come and talk with you.

33 At that very time I sent for you, and you have done well to come. Behold we are all here present before you, and we wish to hear everything commanded thee from God.

34 Then1161 Peter4074 opened455 his mouth,4750 and said,2036 Of a truth225 I perceive2638 that God2316 is no3756 respecter4381 of persons:4381

34 Then Simon Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35 But in every3956 nation1484 he that fears5399 him, and works2038 righteousness,1343 is accepted1184 with him.

35 But among all people, he who fears him and works righteousness is accepted with him.

36 The word3056 which3739 God sent649 to the children5207 of Israel,2474 preaching2097 peace1515 by Jesus2424 Christ:5547 (he is Lord2962 of all:3956)

36 For God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace and tranquility by Jesus Christ: he is the LORD of all.

37 That word,4487 I say, you know,1492 which was published1096 throughout2596 all3650 Judaea,2449 and began756 from Galilee,1056 after3326 the baptism908 which3739 John2491 preached;2784

37 And you also are familiar with the news which was published throughout Judµa, which sprang from Galilee, after the baptism preached by John;

38 Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power, and who, because God was with him, went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil.

39 And we are witnesses3144 of all3956 things which3739 he did4160 both5037 in the land5561 of the Jews,2453 and in Jerusalem;2419 whom3739 they slew337 and hanged2910 on1909 a tree:3586

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did throughout the land of Judµa and in Jerusalem. This very one the Jews crucified on a cross and killed him:

40 Him God2316 raised1453 up the third5154 day,2250 and showed1325 him openly;1717

40 Him God raised on the third day, and showed him openly;

41 Not to all3956 the people,2992 but to witnesses3144 chosen4401 before4401 God,2316 even to us, who3748 did eat4906 and drink4844 with him after3326 he rose450 from the dead.3498

41 Not to all the people, but to us who have been chosen by God to be his witnesses, for we did eat and drink with him after his resurrection from the dead.

42 And he commanded3853 us to preach2784 to the people,2992 and to testify1263 that it is he which3588 was ordained3724 of God2316 to be the Judge2923 of quick2198 and dead.3498

42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify, that it is he who was ordained by God to be the judge of the living and of the dead.

43 To him give all3956 the prophets4396 witness,3140 that through1223 his name3686 whoever3956 3588 believes4100 in him shall receive2983 remission859 of sins.266

43 To him, all the prophets testified that whosoever believes in his name shall receive remission of sins.

44 While Peter4074 yet2089 spoke2980 these5023 words,4487 the Holy40 Ghost4151 fell1968 on1909 all3956 them which heard191 the word.3056

44 While Simon Peter spoke these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all who heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision4061 which believed4103 were astonished,1839 as many3745 as came4905 with Peter,4074 because3754 that on1909 the Gentiles1484 also2532 was poured1632 out the gift1431 of the Holy40 Ghost.4151

45 And the Jewish converts who had come with him were seized with amazement because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also;

46 For they heard191 them speak2980 with tongues,1100 and magnify3170 God.2316 Then5119 answered611 Peter,4074

46 For they heard them speak with divers tongues, and magnify God.

47 Can1410 any5100 man5100 forbid2967 water,5204 that these5128 should not be baptized,907 which3748 have received2983 the Holy40 Ghost4151 as well2532 as we?

47 Then Simon Peter said to them, Can any man forbid water, that these people who have received the Holy Spirit, just as we have, should not be baptized?

48 And he commanded4367 them to be baptized907 in the name3686 of the Lord.2962 Then5119 prayed2065 they him to tarry1961 certain5100 days.2250

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ. And they urged him to remain with them a few days.
