Chapter 12

1 Now1161 about2596 that time2540 Herod2264 the king935 stretched1911 forth1911 his hands5495 to vex2559 certain5100 of the church.1577

2 And he killed337 James2385 the brother80 of John2491 with the sword.3162

3 And because he saw1492 it pleased701 the Jews,2453 he proceeded4369 further to take4815 Peter4074 also.2532 (Then1161 were the days2250 of unleavened106 bread.)

4 And when he had apprehended4084 him, he put5087 him in prison,5438 and delivered3860 him to four5064 squads5069 of soldiers4757 to keep5442 him; intending1011 after3326 Easter3957 to bring321 him forth321 to the people.2992

5 Peter4074 therefore3767 was kept5083 in prison:5438 but prayer4335 was made1096 without1618 ceasing1618 of the church1577 to God2316 for him.

6 And when3753 Herod2264 would3195 have brought4254 him forth,4254 the same1565 night3571 Peter4074 was sleeping2837 between3342 two1417 soldiers,4757 bound1210 with two1417 chains:254 and the keepers5441 before4253 the door2374 kept5083 the prison.5438

7 And, behold,2400 the angel32 of the Lord2962 came2186 on him, and a light5457 shined2989 in the prison:3612 and he smote3960 Peter4074 on the side,4125 and raised1453 him up, saying,3004 Arise450 up quickly.1722 5034 And his chains254 fell1601 off1601 from his hands.5495

8 And the angel32 said2036 to him, Gird2224 yourself, and bind5265 on5265 your sandals.4547 And so3779 he did.4160 And he said3004 to him, Cast4016 your garment2440 about4016 you, and follow190 me.

9 And he went1831 out, and followed190 him; and knew1492 not that it was true227 which3588 was done1096 by the angel;32 but thought1380 he saw991 a vision.3705

10 When they were past1330 the first4413 and the second1208 ward,5438 they came2064 to the iron4603 gate4439 that leads5342 to the city;4172 which3748 opened455 to them of his own848 accord:844 and they went1831 out, and passed4281 on through one3391 street;4505 and immediately2112 the angel32 departed868 from him.

11 And when Peter4074 was come1096 to himself,1438 he said,2036 Now3568 I know1492 of a surety,230 that the LORD2962 has sent1821 his angel,32 and has delivered1807 me out of the hand5495 of Herod,2264 and from all3956 the expectation4329 of the people2992 of the Jews.2453

12 And when he had considered4894 the thing, he came2064 to the house3614 of Mary3137 the mother3384 of John,2491 whose3588 surname1941 was Mark;3138 where3757 many2425 were gathered4863 together4867 praying.4336

13 And as Peter4074 knocked2925 at the door of the gate,4440 a damsel3814 came4334 to listen,5219 named3686 Rhoda.4498

14 And when she knew1921 Peter's4074 voice,5456 she opened455 not the gate4440 for gladness,5479 but ran1532 in, and told518 how Peter4074 stood2476 before4253 the gate.4440

15 And they said2036 to her, You are mad.3105 But she constantly1340 affirmed1340 that it was even so.3779 Then1161 said3004 they, It is his angel.

16 But Peter4074 continued1961 knocking:2925 and when they had opened455 the door, and saw1492 him, they were astonished.1839

17 But he, beckoning2678 to them with the hand5495 to hold4601 their peace,4601 declared1334 to them how4459 the Lord2962 had brought1806 him out of the prison.5438 And he said,2036 Go show518 these5023 things to James,2385 and to the brothers.80 And he departed,1831 and went4198 into1519 another2087 place.5117

18 Now1161 as soon1096 as it was day,2250 there was no3756 small3641 stir5017 among1722 the soldiers,4757 what5101 686 was become1096 of Peter.4074

19 And when Herod2264 had sought1934 for him, and found2147 him not, he examined350 the keepers,5441 and commanded2753 that they should be put520 to death.520 And he went2718 down2718 from Judaea2449 to Caesarea,2542 and there stayed.1304

20 And Herod2264 was highly2371 displeased2371 with them of Tyre5184 and Sidon:4605 but they came3918 with one3661 accord3661 to him, and, having made3982 Blastus986 the king's935 chamberlain1909 their friend,3982 desired154 peace;1515 because1223 their country5561 was nourished5142 by the king's937 country.5561

21 And on a set5002 day2250 Herod,2264 arrayed1746 in royal937 apparel,2066 sat2523 on his throne,968 and made1215 an oration1215 to them.

22 And the people1218 gave a shout,2019 saying, It is the voice5456 of a god,2316 and not of a man.444

23 And immediately3916 the angel32 of the Lord2962 smote3960 him, because473 3739 he gave1325 not God2316 the glory:1391 and he was eaten4662 of worms,4662 and gave up the ghost.1634

24 But the word3056 of God2316 grew837 and multiplied.4129

25 And Barnabas921 and Saul4569 returned5290 from Jerusalem,2419 when they had fulfilled4137 their ministry,1248 and took4838 with them John,2491 whose3588 surname1941 was Mark.3138

Chapter 12

1 NOW at that very time Herod the king surnamed A-grip'pa seized some of the people of the church to oppress them.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

3 And when he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Simon Peter also. This happened during the days of unleavened bread.

4 So he seized him and put him in prison and delivered him to the care of sixteen soldiers to keep him, so that he might deliver him to the Jewish people after the passover.

5 And while Simon Peter was kept in the prison, continual prayer was offered for him to God by the church.

6 And on the very night before the morning that he was to be delivered up, while Simon Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and others were guarding the doors of the prison,

7 The angel of the LORD stood over him, and a light shone in all the prison: and the angel touched him on the side and awoke him, and said to him, Rise up quickly. And the chains fell off from his hands.

8 And the angel said to him, Bind on your girdle and put on your sandals. And so he did. And again he said to him, Put on your robe and follow me.

9 And he went out, and followed the angel, not knowing that what was done by the angel was true, but thought he saw a vision.

10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate and it opened to them of its own accord; and when they had gone out, and had passed one street, the angel departed from him.

11 And when Simon Peter came to himself he said, Now I surely know, that the LORD has sent his angel and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, the king, and from all that the Jews were conspiring against me.

12 And when he understood, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; because many brethren were gathered there praying.

13 When he knocked at the door of the courtyard, a little girl named Rhoda came out to answer.

14 And when she recognized Simon's voice, because of her joy she did not open the door to him, but ran back and told, Behold Simon Peter stands at the gate of the courtyard.

15 They said to her, You are confused. But she argued that it was so. Then said they, Perhaps it is his angel.

16 But Simon Peter continued knocking at the door; and they went out, and saw him, and were astonished.

17 But he motioned to them with his hand to keep quiet; then he entered and related to them how the LORD had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Tell these things to James, and to our brethren. And he went out, and departed for another place.

18 Now when it was morning, there was great tumult among the soldiers as to what had become of Simon Peter.

19 When Herod had sought him and could not find him, he sentenced the guards and commanded that they should be put to death. And Simon Peter left Ju-dµ'a and stayed at Cµs-a-re'a.

20 Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, but they assembled together and came to him, and they appealed to Blas'tus, the king's chamberlain, and asked him that they might have peace, because their country was dependent upon the kingdom of Herod for food supplies.

21 Upon the set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon the throne and addressed the assembly.

22 And all the people shouted, saying, This sounds like the voice of God speaking and not that of a man.

23 And because he did not give the glory to God, in that very hour an angel of the LORD smote him, and he was eaten by disease and died.

24 But the gospel of God continued to be preached and to reach many.

25 Bar'na-bas and Saul, after they had fulfilled their ministry, returned from Jerusalem to An'ti-och, and took with them John whose surname was Mark.
