Luke

Chapter 23

1 And the whole537 multitude4128 of them arose,450 and led71 him to Pilate.4091

2 And they began756 to accuse2723 him, saying,3004 We found2147 this5126 fellow perverting1294 the nation,1484 and forbidding2967 to give1325 tribute5411 to Caesar,2541 saying3004 that he himself1438 is Christ5547 a King.935

3 And Pilate4091 asked1905 him, saying,3004 Are1488 you the King935 of the Jews?2453 And he answered611 him and said,5346 You say3004 it.

4 Then1161 said2036 Pilate4091 to the chief749 priests749 and to the people,3793 I find2147 no3762 fault158 in this5129 man.444

5 And they were the more2001 fierce,2001 saying,3004 He stirs383 up the people,2992 teaching1321 throughout2596 all3650 Jewry,2449 beginning756 from Galilee1056 to this5602 place.5602

6 When Pilate4091 heard191 of Galilee,1056 he asked1905 whether1487 the man444 were a Galilaean.1057

7 And as soon as he knew1921 that he belonged1510 to Herod's2264 jurisdiction,1849 he sent375 him to Herod,2264 who himself846 also2532 was at1722 Jerusalem2414 at1722 that time.2250

8 And when Herod2264 saw1492 Jesus,2424 he was exceeding3029 glad:5463 for he was desirous2309 to see1492 him of a long2425 season, because1223 he had heard191 many4183 things of him; and he hoped1679 to have seen1492 some5100 miracle4592 done1096 by him.

9 Then1161 he questioned1905 with him in many2425 words;3056 but he answered611 him nothing.3762

10 And the chief749 priests749 and scribes1122 stood2476 and vehemently2159 accused2723 him.

11 And Herod2264 with his men4753 of war4753 set1848 him at1848 nothing,1848 and mocked1702 him, and arrayed4016 him in a gorgeous2986 robe,2066 and sent375 him again375 to Pilate.4091

12 And the same846 day2250 Pilate4091 and Herod2264 were made1096 friends5384 together:3326 240 for before4391 they were at1722 enmity2189 between4314 themselves.1438

13 And Pilate,4091 when he had called4779 together4779 the chief749 priests749 and the rulers758 and the people,2992

14 Said2036 to them, You have brought4374 this5129 man444 to me, as one that perverts654 the people:2992 and, behold,2400 I, having examined350 him before1799 you, have found2147 no3762 fault158 in this5126 man444 touching those things whereof you accuse2723 him:

15 No,235 nor3761 yet Herod:2264 for I sent375 you to him; and, see,2400 nothing3762 worthy514 of death2288 is done4238 to him.

16 I will therefore3767 chastise3811 him, and release630 him.

17 (For of necessity2192 318 he must release630 one1520 to them at2596 the feast.1859)

18 And they cried349 out all3829 at3826 once,3826 saying,3004 Away with this5126 man, and release630 to us Barabbas:912

19 (Who3748 for a certain5100 sedition4714 made1096 in the city,4172 and for murder,5408 was cast906 into1519 prison.5438)

20 Pilate4091 therefore,3767 willing2309 to release630 Jesus,2424 spoke4377 again3825 to them.

21 But they cried,2019 saying,3004 Crucify4717 him, crucify4717 him.

22 And he said2036 to them the third5154 time, Why,1063 what5101 evil2556 has he done?4160 I have found2147 no3762 cause158 of death2288 in him: I will therefore3767 chastise3811 him, and let him go.630

23 And they were instant1945 with loud3173 voices,5456 requiring154 that he might be crucified.4717 And the voices5456 of them and of the chief749 priests749 prevailed.2729

24 And Pilate4091 gave sentence1948 that it should be as they required.155

25 And he released630 to them him that for sedition4714 and murder5408 was cast906 into1519 prison,5438 whom3739 they had desired;154 but he delivered3860 Jesus2424 to their will.2307

26 And as they led520 him away,520 they laid hold1949 on one5100 Simon,4613 a Cyrenian,2956 coming2064 out of the country,68 and on2007 him they laid2007 the cross,4716 that he might bear5342 it after3693 Jesus.2424

27 And there followed190 him a great4183 company4128 of people,2992 and of women,1135 which3739 also2532 bewailed2875 and lamented2354 him.

28 But Jesus2424 turning4762 to them said,2036 Daughters2364 of Jerusalem,2419 weep2799 not for me, but weep2799 for yourselves,1438 and for your5216 children.5043

29 For, behold,2400 the days2250 are coming,2064 in the which3739 they shall say,2046 Blessed3107 are the barren,4723 and the wombs2836 that never3756 bore,1080 and the breasts3149 which3739 never3756 gave suck.2337

30 Then5119 shall they begin756 to say3004 to the mountains,3735 Fall4098 on1909 us; and to the hills,1015 Cover2572 us.

31 For if1487 they do4160 these5023 things in a green5200 tree,3586 what5101 shall be done1096 in the dry?3584

32 And there were also2532 two1417 other,2087 malefactors,2557 led71 with him to be put337 to death.337

33 And when3753 they were come565 to the place,5117 which3588 is called2564 Calvary,2898 there1563 they crucified4717 him, and the malefactors,2557 one3739 3303 on1537 the right1188 hand, and the other3739 on1537 the left.710

34 Then1161 said3004 Jesus,2424 Father,3962 forgive863 them; for they know1492 not what5101 they do.4160 And they parted1266 his raiment,2440 and cast906 lots.2819

35 And the people2992 stood2476 beholding.2334 And the rulers758 also2532 with them derided1592 him, saying,3004 He saved4982 others;243 let him save4982 himself,1438 if1487 he be Christ,5547 the chosen1588 of God.2316

36 And the soldiers4757 also2532 mocked1702 him, coming4334 to him, and offering4374 him vinegar,3690

37 And saying,3004 If1487 you be the king935 of the Jews,2453 save4982 yourself.4572

38 And a superscription1923 also2532 was written1125 over1909 him in letters1121 of Greek,1673 and Latin,4513 and Hebrew,1444 THIS3778 IS THE KING935 OF THE JEWS.2453

39 And one1520 of the malefactors2557 which were hanged2910 railed987 on him, saying,3004 If1487 you be Christ,5547 save4982 yourself4572 and us.

40 But the other2087 answering611 rebuked2008 him, saying,3004 Do not you fear5399 God,2316 seeing3754 you are1488 in the same846 condemnation?2917

41 And we indeed3303 justly;1346 for we receive618 the due514 reward514 of our deeds:3739 4238 but this3778 man has done4238 nothing3762 amiss.824

42 And he said3004 to Jesus,2424 Lord,2962 remember3415 me when3752 you come2064 into1722 your kingdom.932

43 And Jesus2424 said2036 to him, Truly281 I say3004 to you, To day4594 shall you be with me in paradise.3857

44 And it was about5616 the sixth1623 hour,5610 and there was a darkness4655 over1909 all3650 the earth1093 until2193 the ninth1766 hour.5610

45 And the sun2246 was darkened,4654 and the veil2665 of the temple3485 was rent4977 in the middle.3319

46 And when Jesus2424 had cried5455 with a loud3173 voice,5456 he said,2036 Father,3962 into1519 your hands5495 I commend3908 my spirit:4151 and having said2036 thus,3778 he gave up the ghost.1606

47 Now1161 when the centurion1543 saw1492 what3588 was done,1096 he glorified1392 God,2316 saying,3004 Certainly3689 this3778 was a righteous1342 man.444

48 And all3956 the people3793 that came4836 together4836 to that sight,2335 beholding2334 the things which were done,1096 smote5180 their breasts,4738 and returned.5290

49 And all3956 his acquaintance,1110 and the women1135 that followed4870 him from Galilee,1056 stood2476 afar3113 off, beholding3708 these5023 things.

50 And, behold,2400 there was a man435 named3686 Joseph,2501 a counselor;1010 and he was a good18 man,435 and a just:1342

51 (The same3778 had not consented4784 to the counsel1012 and deed4234 of them;) he was of Arimathaea,707 a city4172 of the Jews:2453 who3739 also2532 himself846 waited4327 for the kingdom932 of God.2316

52 This3778 man went4334 to Pilate,4091 and begged154 the body4983 of Jesus.2424

53 And he took2507 it down,2507 and wrapped1794 it in linen,4616 and laid5087 it in a sepulcher3418 that was hewn2991 in stone,2991 wherein3757 never3764 man3762 before3764 was laid.2749

54 And that day2250 was the preparation,3904 and the sabbath4521 drew2020 on.2020

55 And the women1135 also,2532 which3748 came4905 with him from Galilee,1056 followed2628 after,2628 and beheld2300 the sepulcher,3419 and how5613 his body4983 was laid.5087

56 And they returned,5290 and prepared2090 spices759 and ointments;3464 and rested2270 the sabbath4521 day according2596 to the commandment.1785

Luke

Chapter 23

1 THEN the whole company of them rose up, and brought him to Pilate;

2 And began to accuse him, saying, We found this man misleading our people, and forbidding to pay the head-tax to Caesar; and he says concerning himself that he is a King, even the Christ.

3 Pilate asked him and said, Are you the king of the Jews? He said to him, You say that.

4 Then Pilate said to the high priests and the people, I cannot find any fault against this man.

5 But they shouted and said, He has stirred up our people, teaching throughout Judaea, and beginning from Galilee even to this place.

6 When Pilate heard the name Galilee, he asked if the man was a Galilean.

7 And when he knew that he was under the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him to Herod, because he was in Jerusalem in those days.

8 When Herod saw Jesus he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things concerning him; and he hoped to see some miracle by him.

9 And he asked him many words; but Jesus gave him no answer.

10 But the high priests and the scribes stood, and accused him bitterly.

11 And Herod and his soldiers insulted him, and mocked him, and dressed him in a scarlet robe, and sent him to Pilate.

12 And that day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other; for there was a longstanding enmity between them.

13 Then Pilate called the high priests and the leaders of the people,

14 And he said to them, You brought me this man, as if he were misleading your people; and behold, I have examined him before your own eyes, and I have found no fault in this man concerning all that you accuse him.

15 Not even has Herod; for I sent him to him; and behold, he has done nothing worthy of death.

16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

17 For there was a custom to release to them one at the feast.

18 But all the people cried out saying, Get rid of him, and release to us Bar-Abbas;

19 Who because of sedition and murder which had happened in the city, was cast into prison.

20 Again Pilate spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.

21 But they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22 And he said to them the third time, What evil has he done? I have found nothing in him, worthy of death; I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

23 But they persisted with loud voices, and asked to crucify him. And their voice and that of the high priests prevailed.

24 Then Pilate commanded to have their request granted.

25 So he released to them the one who because of sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they asked for; and he delivered Jesus to their will.

26 And while they took him away, they laid hold of Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming from the field, and they placed the end of the cross on him, to carry it with Jesus.

27 And many people followed him, and the women who were mourning and wailing over him.

28 But Jesus turned to them and said, O daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me; but weep over yourselves, and over your own children.

29 For behold, the days are coming, in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never gave birth, and the breasts that never gave suck.

30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

31 For if they do these things with the green wood, what will be done with dry wood?

32 And there were coming with him two others, malefactors, to be put to death.

33 And when they came to a place which is called The Skull, they crucified him there, and the malefactors, one on his right and one on his left.

34 And Jesus said, O Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing. And they divided his garments and cast lots over them.

35 The people stood looking on. And even the leaders of the synagogue mocked him, and said, He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ, the chosen one of God.

36 And the soldiers ridiculed him, as they came near him and offered him vinegar,

37 Saying to him, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

38 There was also an inscription which was written over him, in Greek and Roman, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 Now one of the malefactors who were crucified with him, blasphemed against him, saying, If you are the Christ, save yourself and save us also.

40 But the other rebuked him, and said to him, Do you not fear even God, for you are also in the same judgment?

41 And ours is just, for we are paid as we deserve and as we have done; but he has done nothing wrong.

42 And he said to Jesus, Remember me, my Lord, when you come in your kingdom.

43 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise. *

44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and darkness fell upon the whole earth, until the ninth hour.

45 And the sun was darkened, and the door curtains of the temple were torn in the center.

46 Then Jesus cried with a loud voice and said, O my Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. He said this and passed away.

47 When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said, Truly this was a righteous man.

48 And all the people who were gathered together to see this sight, when they saw what had happened, returned, beating their breasts.

49 And all the acquaintances of Jesus stood afar off, and the women who had come with him from Galilee, and they were beholding these things.

50 There was a man named Joseph the counsellor of Arimathaea, a city of Judaea, a good and righteous man.

51 He did not agree with their wishes and their actions; and he waited for the kingdom of God.

52 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53 And he took it down and wrapped it in fine linen, and laid it in a hewn tomb, in which no one was ever laid.

54 This was a Friday, and the sabbath was approaching.

55 The women who had come with him from Galilee were near, and they saw the tomb, and how his body was laid.

56 And they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the sabbath they rested, as it is commanded.

20 Pilate4091 therefore,3767 willing2309 to release630 Jesus,2424 spoke4377 again3825 to them.

20 Again Pilate spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus.

21 But they cried,2019 saying,3004 Crucify4717 him, crucify4717 him.

21 But they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22 And he said2036 to them the third5154 time, Why,1063 what5101 evil2556 has he done?4160 I have found2147 no3762 cause158 of death2288 in him: I will therefore3767 chastise3811 him, and let him go.630

28 But Jesus turned to them and said, O daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over me; but weep over yourselves, and over your own children.

29 For, behold,2400 the days2250 are coming,2064 in the which3739 they shall say,2046 Blessed3107 are the barren,4723 and the wombs2836 that never3756 bore,1080 and the breasts3149 which3739 never3756 gave suck.2337

29 For behold, the days are coming, in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never gave birth, and the breasts that never gave suck.
